great comment :9 exactly what I was thinking. One guy gets an injury and peole are shouting the product is not safe, and should be banned. When thousands die because of regular cigarettes every day. But it's still necesary to do some research and get yourself a quality product. You can check out the site <a href="http://www.electroniccigarettereviewsite.net">http://www.electroniccigarettereviewsite.net</a> to check which brands have good fedback from users and which don't.

Remember when everybody smoked? There was far less obesity. Smoking kills the appetite and there were far fewer overweight teenagers. Don't know what's worse--dying from a smoking disease is horrible but you are thin and sort of cool. Dying from being a fat slob is ugly and never cool. Still, some smokers were also fat--you can't win.

You can win - it just takes effort - eat right and exercise regularly, and then one will be in great shape without smoking at all.

What I find in my job in a hospital, yes the smokers are the main target for health insurance costs, etc. My question, is the overwgt population? When is the system going to catch up overwgt issue, they have more health issues, create more injuries to healthcare workers and have more treatments offered to them. Even have surgical procedures to assist them. Both smoking and overwgt are choices, why not treat both the same way? The ecig is one of the best choices for those of us that have tried severals different ways to quit smoking. I have tried the medications, of course one of the medications use to assist smokers to quit, was trialed in psy unit, they found that that pt population quit. A fair population, no, it did not work. Tried the chant medication, was a great wgt lose medication, vomited/nauseated for a week. Lost wgt, did not need to. Just a sad that healthcare still ignores the overwgt people, and focused on smokers. The ecig, has helped me quit smoking, meanwhile if I admit that will be drug tested on a regular basis. Just should be equal for those of us, that have made bad choices in our life.

"Both smoking and overwgt are choices"...being overweight is not always a "choice", as you so injudiciously claim. I have been overweight my entire life. Taking into consideration the fact that I work out more often than most, eat healthier(and quite a bit less) than most, and live an active lifestyle in my "down time", tell me....how is my weight a choice?

The device this poor guy used was not an electronic cigarette. It was a "MOD" which have a history of melting and exploding.
A MOD looks nothing like a cigarette.
Have a look for yourself:

I heard as well that it was a MOD the way this news story is written it's going to scare some potential new users away I don't use MODS and I have not had a real cigarette in about 11 months. The E-cig is the best thing that I have used for quitting smoking I have tried every other thing on the market and have never succeded till now more info is needed on the device he was using so we can quell future users of any fears they may have over this story but even still with all the units sold and all the current users compared to real cigarettes real cigarettes win when it comes to deaths or injury's and fires.

As others have said - no details were given - may have been something HE did wrong -was it a mod with unprotected battery - was he using the correct charger - had it been sitting in a hot car, or window sill for hours - had the battery been dropped and damaged? who knows.

The batteries used in ecigs are the very same types used in cell phones (Lithium Ion), Cells phones have also blown up and injured people - the reason for using this type of battery, is it's higher voltage, lower weight, and the fact that it is one of the most "environmentally friendly" batteries - but ALL BATTERIES can be dangerous if not maintained and charged properly - car batteries have been known to "blow up" in peoples faces also.

I think the important thing to realize is: There have been (Literally) tens of Millions (possibly Billions) of e-cig batteries in use since the e-cig was developed - This is the FIRST TIME this has happened - I know this for a fact -just because of the news coverage it has garnered - How may other items that people use daily, has that type of safety record??? - Not Many!!

This has become a news story - because there is a certain group of people that would like to see the e-cig done away with - they just ignore the fact that millions (last official estimate) of people have quit smoking cigarettes with the help of E-Cigs. - I own a small e-cig store, and EVERY SINGLE DAY I hear people happily telling me how long it's been since they have smoked a cigarette! Many of them 2 or 3 years! -the rest of them, confident that they have FINALLY been able to "Quit for good", "KNOWING" that they will reach that 2 and 3 year mark. - There has been NO OTHER device or drug - EVER - that has helped so-o-o-o many.

No one can guarantee that this will not happen again - the same way that no one can promise that you will not get struck by a car the next time you cross a street - Life itself is a gamble, and comes with NO GUARANTEES!! -Don't let this (1 in a billion) incident keep you away from a possibly "life changing" decision.

You are wrong!! there have been many people JUST WAITING for something negative about e-cigs - and if it had EVER happened before - IT WOULD HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED

batteries can explode when overcharged and have been known to happen in any electronic device from cell phones to electric razors. Official Joyetech PVs have a blowout plug so if it does explode the pressure will be released in a safer manner but so far the only time a joyetech device has exploded was while left on charge for too long.

Sounds like you're just worried about your bottom line. Wouldn't want to lose any customers that are afraid they might blow their face off hey?

The man just told you (and very accurately, I might add), how this device has helped MILLIONS of people to stop smoking. It has given them the chance to live longer lives. The device has also been doggedly pursued by the FDA since its inception--and not for safety issues, no sir. It has been their desire since the beginning to effectively make the electronic cigarette a "drug delivery device." Why? In order to make it illegal to administer nicotine in this fashion? No. In order to regulate the 'e-juice' that is used in the same way as medicine? No.

The FDA was coming out with its own version of the device: one that could be sold for over 400 bucks. And it's exactly the same as the electronic cigarette you would find at a 7-11 for 5 bucks.

This is the perfect impetus for the FDA to show they have built a better, safer mousetrap; but it will be exactly what is seen in stores today. It will also function just as well (which is to say it will not function very well at all).

The gentleman was using stacked, unprotected lithium ion CR-123 batteries @ 3 volts a piece. Used in this fashion the batteries allow for a 6 volt power source. Without the PCB chip that comes in a protected battery to allow over or under discharging, the man was essentially holding a pipe bomb.

Some manufacturers of 'mods' (as they are referred to), provide their systems with venting to allow gas to escape in the unlikely event this occurs (AND IT IS UNLIKELY BECAUSE AN ACCIDENT OF THIS MAGNITUDE HAS ONLY OCCURED ONCE--OUT OF MILLIONS). Disclaimers from most vendors ask consumers to only use protected batteries, even to the point of suggestion only one brand and type (the brand and type that they have personally tested to be used safely in their device).

The point of my diatribe is simple: while tragic to see anyone hurt like this, it is 99.9% likely that this was user error and had absolutely nothing to do with the manufacturing of the device.

The e-cig user also could have mix matched his charger pack with a different charger of incorrect voltage or polarity tip. who knows if he had just lost a piece of the original product accessories and just went the cheap route by just looking through the junk drawer for a plug that fit the charger.

If smoked backwards or held in the mouth while talking the e-cigs atomizer can become quite hot and possibly burn your mouth, but I doubt that would effect the battery compartment and cause an explosion. I have never heard of an e-cigar as this apparently was not a cigarette as the headline suggests?

there is warning to keep the ecig away from metal or magnetic objects including cell phones, or it may damage the motor and battery. i would bet this man didn't heed that, and won't consent to interview so he doesn't screw up his lawsuit by admitting to it. looks like he ordered a homemade device from the internet, not one like they sell in drugstores. still way safer than falling asleep with a cigarette!
