Comments on: For Some Kids, Hunger All Too Real
Photo Exhibit "Witness To Hunger" Captures Families’ Struggles To Survive
- When I first viewed this story, I didn't say a word.....because my tears said it all. I do have advice for someone.......My husband and I live in Oklahoma currently and in 2001, we both worked and our monthly bills totaled close to $2000 a month. I thought this is insane, so I sat down with all the bills and I added all of the totals. At that moment I started shuttting/turning off and canceling extra curricular things that we didn't really need. For example, we cut off the cable, sattelite, the home phone and etc. This change brought our bills under $1000. To this day we still have no satellite or cable and etc. We still live at that $1000 monthly limit. Our rent is $700 and utilities are $125 a month plus electric, which varies monthly, but not over $150. So my point is after 9 years, we still are doing pretty good. Now of course overall we must get back in our prayer closet and seek God and not the governments help. What is everyone going to do when the food stamp/medicare program goes under? Really think about it... What would you do? My point being is that we must turn back to God and seek him and not the worlds way of doing things. America needs and will soon turn back to God!!

- It's highly possible that the mother had her hair braided by another woman living in the same shelter. Even outside of the shelter situation, it is very common for black women to share their hair doing talents with relative and friends and to do each others hair. In addition, I would guess that most of their clothing was from when times were better. There is nothing wrong with taking pride in your appearance regardless of circumstances. That in and of itself can help keep spirits up. Just because their nails look nice doesn't mean that they are acrylic and require periodic fills. Also, shelters receive tons of clothing by way of donation. I happen to give a lot of various nice and often time name brand clothing to the various shelters and agencies in my area. However, Aeropostle is not expensive or even considered designer apparel...Period. On another note, $400 per month in food stamps should be more than enough feed a family of one adult and five children breakfast and dinner. It's not my place to judge but perhaps someone needs to refine their grocery list...rice, big container of oatmeal, no sodas, etc. It's heartbreaking to see children hungry. I don't wish that anyone.
For the life of me I will never understand why people (of all ethnic groups) with so few resources have so many children. - Reply to this comment
- How sad children go hungry in the USA. No child should ever go hungry in America.
This story made me cry. Things happen in life. God forbid it happens to you people who are so happy to make negative comments. - Reply to this comment
- Gee, I'm not really sure what you're trying to say. It's not about me....it's about some amazing little human beings that already exist and whatever your opinion on why they are here, really doesn't matter. There's history to their story that is negated by the fact that they are hungry. I will refrain from expressing my personal opinion of you, while I try to focus on the fact that there are children going hungry right now. Have a good life.

- She's a full time worker and can't afford to feed her kids. Welcome to the US, Third World country fathered by Bush.

- Gee, here's an idea: if you can barely afford to feed yourself, DON'T HAVE KIDS. I have tremendous sympathy for the children who suffer under such conditions, but not for the people who create these situations through irresponsible and stupid behavior. They are not qualified to be parents, and it's tragic that they bring children into this world with no one to care for them.

What an idea. If only people would have done as you say thousands of years ago, then there never would have been starving people on the planet. What an bleeding idiot you are with simpleton nonsense. Just another way for you to shake your finger at the poor and say shame on you. - Reply to this comment
- I can only speak of what I know and what I know is that when 13 year old Lewis says that he goes to sleep to escape the pain of hunger....that makes me weep. I don't have a lot materially but I do have the compassion to feel the pain of a hungry child and I do have the power to vote and I thank God that we have a President that I have faith in and that will end the pain of all of the Lewis' in this country. Where are our priorities? This is shameful and should be embarrasing to those that can help.
