- Forget the statistics. The answer to "how ofter do police hit their targets" is very simple. Not often enough. Unfortunately most of those who want to be critical have never fired under these conditions and have no clue what type of pressure these men and women are under. I say they did a great job. Had they not have fired they could have allowed MANY more people to be killed or injured. But, I am sure the critics won't address that issue. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. This is a no win society in todays political climate. It is always "someone else's" fault.

- The NYPD has a storied past of being lousy shots. They shot this guy ten times and remember how they fired 41 shots at Amadou Diallo and only hit him 19 times (and I say only, whew) and that was by only four cops. Just how many times do they think they need to shoot someone to neutralize a threat. They need to take some lessons from that seventy year old who shot those punks at that internet cafe in Florida

- I can't believe a reporter was stupid enough to ask that question? He must be an Obama supporter!

- target practice is NOTHING like shooting under fire. you people who have never been there should really keep your criticism to yourselves.

- [In "real life," he explains, an officer will miss most of the time when the target is moving or if there is a physical struggle involved.]

yea ... but concealed carry holders will hit every time ... and only need one bullet to take the perp down.
at least that's what we're told. - Reply to this comment
- This is an excellent article to show that fewer guns, legal or illegal, inproves safety for everyone. When highly trained professionals can't get above 50% in good conditions, it is no wonder that that are so many unintended deaths that occur among lay-people with guns, even if it is legal for those people to have them.

- The police did their job, just too bad innocent people were in the line of fire.

- "the officers' "hit ratio" on Friday was almost twice as good as the department's average." Well then its a darn good thing that it wasn't average officers at this scene then.

- Ten out of sixteen bullets actually hit the target - that's damn good shooting considering the stress, required quick action, and numerous other factors. Kinda tough on the civilians, though.
