...sad...he probably didn't want to leave because he had it better in jail than out on his own...I'm old enough to remember a Christmas Eve episode of Red Skelton as Freddie the Freeloader who got arrested and then released, only to get arrested again, etc...this went on for about four arrests, release and re-arrests...finally the cops realized he hadn't anywhere to go and it was snowing, so they let Freddie spend Christmas Eve and Day in jail, feeding him, keeping him warm with a roof over his head...

The fact is that in our society...there is a segment of the population...Some that I know of myself...that frankly have nowhere to go and do not mind being locked up......Let's just imagine if you were destitute and had nowhere to go ...What are you to do....pretty hot out in the open just saying

I suspect the man simply would rather remain in jail with food and shelter than out on the streets without same.
It is interesting though that police have no problem driving people TO jail but refuse to assist them BACK "home".
