- McDonalds should have to pay the fees to prosecute and imprison this man for such a silly case...lets see how far they would carry this if they had to foot the bill, and not depend on an already over stressed government budget, or an increase in our tax dollars.
Stupid is stupid. No, clearly he should not have taken the $1 soda, but to expect thousands of $$ to be spent to prosecute is equally as stupid. Drop the case Mickey D's....its not worth it. Better yet, offer him the job to clean the bathrooms and sweep outside and you will supply him with free food. I am sure he is unemployed and hungry...It will solve two problems, your nasty bathrooms and his hunger/thirst issues. - Reply to this comment

- Yeah... it's the governments fault, or the corporations fault... nobody mentions the fact that in today's society, people think they can do what they want without consequence. I have managed a fast food restaurant before and people are constantly stealing and pretending that the fast food chain shouldn't care, because they have insurance or make lots of money. This man is a thief plain and simple and deserves what is coming to him!

- I'm sorry, fairness or not in other theft cases, theft is theft. If you steal, you deserve to be punished for stealing. We're not talking about the grand scheme of how the system is corrupted and needs to be fixed. We're talking about a man who couldn't just get a free refreshing glass of WATER from an establishment who had no reason to offer him even that glass. He wasn't paying for anything, he wasn't a customer, they didn't have to even give him access to their facility, restrooms, or water.
He stole, he has stolen before and clearly knows it's wrong. Theft is theft and it doesn't matter where from. If you're stupid to get caught stealing a DOLLAR of POP.. and then not say 'oh man sorry.. yeah here's your dollar' you need to be taught.
Also, it's a proven fact that criminals (especially career criminals) escalate to higher risk crimes as their 'need' increases. How do you know he only ever stole a little this.. a little that. Maybe they only caught him for this.
Stop using the fact that wall street is screwed up as a 'everything else is messed up to' scape goat. Everyone knows that it is a problem but that doesn't make THEFT right or permissible. - Reply to this comment
- Here is a person with a complete and utter distain for society and its rules. Whats next your money, your car, your wife, your family, your good name. He doesn't care and is without morales or scruples. Lock him up and put him on the chain gang and threw away the key. You wouldn't believe how much he and others like him have already cost the American taxpayer.

- Why are governments in financial straits? Well in this case, they couldn't just pay $1 for a soda, instead they have to pay for a trial and incarceration. There needs to be a King Solomon law where someone in government can overrule stupidity.

- Soooooooooo much worse that what they did on Wall Street in 2008! I can for sure see why this is taken more seriously.
Collapse the economy with fraud and cause trillions of dollars in damage and destroy millions of jobs and lives: NOT A FELONY. Stealing a buck worth of soda: FELONY.
Makes sense to me.
