- More and more research shows that children's exposure to domestic violence sets dangerous precedents for behavior if the right people are not at hand to show him a different path and lead by positive example. There is never an excuse for recklessly taking another life, but perspective is very important here to help us put greater emphasis and effort towards breaking the cycle of violence in our communities. Every person counts. makersofmemories.org

- It's really irritating to me to know that, so soon after this has taken place, the media's trying to gain sympathy for the shooter. Did he have a bad life? Sure. So did myself at that age and who knows how many other people. We live in a culture that is willing to minimize the horrific actions people commit by making excuses for them. It's time for people to wake up and start holding those who commit these crimes accountable for their actions. Why doesn't the media focus on the fact that there are 5 families who are dealing with horrible trauma, 3 of which have to bury their loved ones far before they should have had to.

- I think the article is implying to nurture, not nature. Since he grew up in a "violent" environment, the implication is that he acted out based on what he learned. No, the article does not state or imply heredity as the reason. Either way, I agree with those of you that say it's not excusable.

- Talk to the religious right. They're the ones who insist that children stay in abusive homes. They're usually also among the loudest screaming for continual tax cuts that would help fund the foster homes that could provide an escape from abusive parents.

- A bad upbringing is no excuse for what he did. There is no acceptable excuse actually for what he did.

- The headline reads: "Report: TJ Lane, alleged school shooter, grew up with family violence"
At 17 years old you know the difference between right and wrong. It's time for everyone to be responsible for their own actions and quit trying to find someone else to blame for anything that happens. Hook this worthless scumbag to the chair and pull the switch right now. - Reply to this comment
- I'd like to see the idiots on the right do the nation a favor and start demanding mandatory parent licensing that requires a year long training course.
P.S.: We STILL don't know how this 17 year old got the gun in the first place do we OHIO!!!!!!! - Reply to this comment

- Oh come on, I don't believe violence is hereditary. I come from an alcoholic abusive biological father and none of his eight children are violent or abusive.
We all have seen bullying in school, in our work place and in our community. It's time to step up and stop it now. - Reply to this comment
