Clearly this man is trying to replace his wife's $100k a year salary anyway he can. He's a $40k a year night watchman at area parks. The lawyer that took this case should be impeached by the bar.

wondering if ALL the crash victims had their blood levels checked for alcohol and drugs?......wondering if the gasoline inhaled during the crash could have affected the toxicology results????

Barbara ?....? noted witnesses who saw Schuler on the highway reported she was driving erratically, moving in and out of lanes, honking her horn and flashing her headlights.
"This is not the actions of a person who is drunk," Barbara said. "And I think something happened to her brain."

This is ridiculous - changing lanes, honking horn, flashing lights etc are indications of someone in a major hurry (she also attempted to/passed people on the shoulder), and lack of control (there was no real reason to be in a hurry since she called and said she'd be late) are GOOD indications of someone who is drunk. Drunks can drive at higher BAC, but she'd have crashed or pulled over had she merely been sick.

Other issue is you're describing her driving on roadways 17 and 87 - MANY witnesses reported this aggressive driving for 60 miles on her way to the Tappan Zee bridge. After that there were no reports of aggressive driving (from Tappan Zee to Taconic), so either the physical issue corrected itself (unlikely, because she still said she was having trouble seeing) or she mellowed out so as not to call attention to herself (state trooper station was very near the east end of TZ). When on the Taconic, at least 12 witnesses said she was driving fine, although in the wrong direction, and staying in her lane. Spooky - the woman could see just fine, had to know she was going the wrong way, and would have pulled over/turned around (when getting flashed/honked at going up the exit ramp at Pleasantvile Road) to avoid a DWI.

Very sad story that has obviously touched many nerves. My gut says this was a suicide. This woman was very angry and lost it. Her husband knows why she did this. Probably an affair, possibly with a sister-in-law.

I guess what makes me wonder is if she was "white-knuckling" it all weekend, and was a "closet drinker", she had to have had some kind of control over it, at least to the point she was able to keep it hidden from everybody, including her husband. Then why in the world did she not wait just a couple more hours to start drinking, and why would she choose this particular time, will all those children in the car, to drink to this extent while driving? If she was so good at keeping it hidden, wouldn't she have worried her nieces would notice and tell their parents? The oldest one, at 9 years old, would have been old enough to recognize the erratic behavior, even if she didn't recognize it as her aunt being drunk.
Unfortunately, I'm related to a severe alcoholic, who can go days or weeks without drinking, but if she has one, she drinks until she passes out. My point I guess is if she was able to abstain all weekend, and she had 5 little kids in her vehicle, why did she not just wait until she got home? And if she was able to hide her drinking from everybody, why would she call her brother when she wasn't feeling well? If he honestly did not know she was a drinker, why would she risk him finding out she'd been drinking with his children in the vehicle? If she was a closet drinker, she'd would have had to have enough cognition, even drunk, to keep it hidden from people. One possible explanation would be if they knew she was an alcoholic, but thought she had gotten clean, and she had fallen off the wagon. I don't know, this whole sad situation defies explanation.

The top of the article states that the child in the photo, Melanie, died but this is not one of the nieces (Emma, alyson, Kate) that was with her.

This horrible tragedy and the devastation upon countless victims is heartbreaking. If anything remotely positive is to come out of it, perhaps it may serve as a wake-up call to high-functioning alcoholics: get help, or at least don't endanger anyone else. Besides the avalanche of forensic evidence, two telltale points convinced me of her "closet drinking". First, only a hard-core drinker purchases alcohol for themselves in such a large quantity and, second, the fact that her own husband, family and friends claim not to have ever seen her drink. That statement alone is the dead giveaway--- high functioning alcoholics often abstain in social situations. They're too afraid of losing control, drinking too much, letting their secret out. I agree with the previous post that she probably "white knuckled it all weekend" and decided to have a quick one as soon as she got out of everyone's sight. I am deeply ashamed to admit I know what I'm talking about. I just thank God above I never got behind the wheel or, even worse, had someone's children in my care.

Everybody keeps saying she must have been a high functioning alcoholic, hiding her drinking from her husband and family. I have not seen anywhere that the M.E. checked to see if she showed signs of being a long-term alcoholic. I would think if she was a long-term alcohol abuser, if nothing else, her liver would have shown signs of long term abuse. I feel so badly for all families involved in this tragedy. If Diane had been my wife/daughter/ sister, and I truly felt this was totally out of character for her, I would definitely be pushing for an independent autopsy.
I haven't seen anywhere saying how they had been married, but I just can't believe if she was a long term alcoholic, even a closet one, that NOBODY ever saw any signs of it? It's just so sad, all the way around.

"Having problems forming words," as well as losing parts of vision, as well as disorientation and panic are ALL symptoms of a hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic emergency. In addition, no one seems to have done any basic forensics homework regarding false positive alcohol findings. As a journalist, I personally suspect there is a much larger story being hidden here.
