Sorry, I forgot the source: article in the Houston Chronicle. There are many, many more on the Internet that document FLDS welfare dependence. Perhaps they've turned over a new leaf. Who cares? They've amassed huge amounts of money that they put in tax-sheltered accounts. I gotta get me some of that magic underwear!

In fact, the FLDS has long had an overt policy of trying to sting the government for everything it can ? in the form of food stamps, tax breaks and subsidies. An FLDS member will generally declare his first marriage and take the tax benefit, then let his subsequent wives claim welfare as unemployed single mothers. Down the years, the church has earned hundreds of millions of dollars in public funds this way, a process it describes derisively as "bleeding the beast".

Here's something from Wikipedia:

In 2001, the Los Angeles Times reported that welfare fraud is widespread in both Hildale and its sister city Colorado City AZ. As many as 50% of plural wives are on government assistance. The fraud arises from the women's claims that they do not know the whereabouts of the children's fathers. Later welfare fraud was found to not be true here.

Here is what we know about FLDS welfare fraud from those who are in the know:

None of the 600 or so residents of the Yearning For Zion Ranch received any form of welfare, according to state officials. Cash assistance is almost nonexistent in the twin towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz.

While many families living in the sect's traditional home base receive food and medical help, virtually all those families qualify under program guidelines, authorities say. There has been a single fraud case prosecuted in the past decade.

Ironic the state is force-feeding him. FLDS members have been eating free courtesy of the state for years. The FLDS women, most famously the women at the Yearning for Zion "ranch" in Texas, know how to work the system. They claim welfare checks and obtain food stamps as single moms because they are not legally married, and they pop out future child brides like Pez dispensers. Ka-ching!

Your title says it all. CBS has decided to go for yellow journalism over responsible journalism. Shame on you.
