In the twentieth century, the Supreme Court more closely scrutinized government activity involving religious institutions. In Everson v. Board of Education (1947), the Supreme Court upheld a New Jersey statute funding student transportation to schools, whether parochial or not. Justice Hugo Black held,
The "establishment of religion" clause of the First Amendment means at least this: Neither a state nor the federal government can set up a church. Neither can pass laws which aid one religion, aid all religions, or prefer one religion over another. Neither can force nor influence a person to go to or to remain away from church against his will or force him to profess a belief or disbelief in any religion. No person can be punished for entertaining or professing religious beliefs or disbeliefs, for church attendance or non-attendance. No tax in any amount, large or small, can be levied to support any religious activities or institutions, whatever they may be called, or whatever form they may adopt to teach or practice religion. Neither a state nor the Federal Government can, openly or secretly, participate in the affairs of any religious organizations or groups and vice versa. In the words of Jefferson, the clause against establishment of religion by law was intended to erect "a wall of separation between church and State."
Now find another way to argue....such as 'the Supreme Court is NOT the Constitution...it just interprets it....'....what everl. So long as the government MAINTAINS separation...Muslims go away pizzed. - Reply to this comment
- What drives you to want to "strike at the rich" ? Democrats apparently want to use them to fuel the funding for all their programs and as a source for "Spread" that Obama wants to spread around, so wouldn't it make sense that if you intend to "USE" the rich and soak them for all these taxes to fund your socialist programs, that you would want them doing well.....how else are you going to get all their money.
The fallacy is that Liberal Democrats (I'm not saying you are one), but they believe that if someone earns 2 dollars (the rich), someone must have lost 2 dollars or had it stolen from them (the poor).....that's just not how it works.

You are the one that jumped on me Joe. I metaphorically stated (in response to another poster) that if God wanted to strike at the rich he wouldn't flood the world since yachts tend to float. I alluded to the fact that if he wanted to really strike at the rich he would unravel Wall street much as what is going on now. I am not saying unequivocally that there is a divine hand in this but it certainly appears that the sin of greed is somewhat involved. I believe the bible also makes several unkind references to the money changers. - Reply to this comment

I'd love to see a Survivor with conservatives and liberals divided to see who could survive the longest without producer intervention. My money would be on the conservatives...since they are happiest without any producer involvement. The liberals wouldn't be able to find water, make fire, or feed themselves without some committee to 'oversee the project' and another committee to 'oversee the overseers'. The game would end with the liberals complaining the conservatives had all the food, water, and fire and wouldn't share...which would be against the rules, but they wouldn't care about following the rules..just that their needs hadn't been met and it was because the conservatives had 'it all'.
The world could exist without liberals....but in a world with only liberals would have to create conservatives in order to exist...to carry the water...make the fire...build the houses...and cook the food...and then find some way to make them the bad guys for being such good workers. Liberals love to drink the water...too bad they s.uck at carrying the water. - Reply to this comment
- Its rather obvious how politics works in Congress.
We, the people, elect politicians who tell us what we want to hear in each election year.
BUT... its they, the "campaign" contributors, who show them the money.
So who do YOU think gets the ear of Congress, huh?!
Bob Hope many years ago said something to the effect of - America has the best politicians money can buy. - Reply to this comment
- Oh, and by the way....that $1.6 TRILLION dollar savings Comrade Obama and his economic team is being so bragadocious about?
When questioned about it yesterday it was revealed that the $1.6 TRILLION in savings they're touting is based on expenses at the SURGE LEVEL through 2019....which is an IMPOSSIBILITY!!! President BUSH had already negotiated a troop withdrawl for 2009 and 2011 that had NOTHING to do with Barak Hussein Obama....there are NO EXPENSES through 2019 to be saved!!!! - Reply to this comment
- Big Story coming out of Kansas City Star News....
$950,000 OF THE FIRST $1.2 MIL in stimulous money going to KCMO for traffic light installation/repair has been diverted to cover the debt of the infamous POWER AND LIGHT DISTRICT that has tanked inspite of Kay Barnes high hopes and tax burden she placed the city under just to get it built. Now, according to Obama, Mayors were going to be held accoutable if this money was not used for the purpose it was given...which was primarity to create jobs and stimulate the economy. He said he would be watching and would personally 'call out' anyone who abused the tax payers' money. Well...let's see how quickly he contacts the mayor and how quickly the city manager, who made the decision to use this amount to settle debt over creating jobs, is finally fired...which should have been done 2 years ago!! Go Obama...Go!!! - Reply to this comment
- LOL! It isn't the middle class or poor that are offing themselves because they can't face life being poor or not being better than everyone else. I have lost money in my 401k just like everyone else but I will survive and continue to live the frugal existence I always have. Beside Joe, haven't you ever heard that it is easier to get a camel through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven?
