And I don''''t find that clothing is cheaper now, just more poorly manufactured.

That''s because the store is ripping you off.

Actually, if you check the labels at the supermarket, the MAJORITY of foods are imported.

First we suffered under British rule

Then we suffered when the Brits industrialized before we did

Then we suffered Smoot-Hawley

Then we suffered World War 2 after Pearl Harbor

Now we are suffering threats to sue us if we try to save our economy

The USA has ALWAYS been the wimpy kid who gets beat up by the rest of the world

NOTHING YOU BUY IS MADE HERE ANYMORE

JUST BECAUSE IF IT WAS MADE HERE, YOU WOULDN''''T PAY SUCH A HIGH PRICE

IT''''S CHEAPER AT WALMART

ONLY THE GOVERNMENT BUYS MADE IN USA ANYMORE

THEN PEOPLE CLAIM THAT THE GOVERNMENT WAS OVERCHARGED

No. Most of our food is still produced in the U.S., but we cannot have free choice if it isn''t labeled. And I don''t find that clothing is cheaper now, just more poorly manufactured.

One regulation I would like to see would be the requirement that all products, including food products, be clearly labeled as to country of origin.

Unless I beat it into your head with a 2 X 4, I don''''t know how it could be explained clearer.

I ALREADY AGREE WITH YOU.

WE NEED TARIFFS

WITHOUT TARIFFS WE ARE DOOMED TO SLAVERY

Let''s focus on the message, and not get hung up on details

Here''s what happened on ANOTHER BOARD when someone (not me) advocated tariffs:

======= I AM QUOTING SOMEONE ELSE DON''T FLAME ME =======

You might want to re-visit the history of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 (2 republiCONS BTW) that over 1,000 economists signed a petition against!

The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act (sometimes known as the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act) was an act signed into law on June 17, 1930, that raised U.S. tariffs on over 20,000 imported goods to record levels. In the United States 1,028 economists signed a petition against this legislation...

At a restaurant, I would like to be able to order shrimp from the U.S., and, in a grocery store, buy juice with a label that explained where the apples were grown in print that was displayed clearly and in large enough print to read.

You keep harping on Smoot - Hawley, like it has relevance to today''''s problems, when today''''s problems, have NOTHING to do with the problems of that era.
Posted by hungry686 at 05:40 PM : Feb 07, 2009

No, actually I agree with you.

It''s just that when I SAY Smoot-Hawley doesn''t apply today, everybody argues with me.

I''m tired of always having to argue against Smoot-Hawley.

I wanted to see someone else do it for a change.

You didn''t really do a very good job.

But I agree - without tariffs we are doomed.

They come in unanounced they are suprise inspections, and the amount of time they give to correct something is totally ridiculas. I''ve gone with these inspectors at the plant where I worked, they find something in the morning and re-inspect after lunch if it''s not corrected you are fined. They don''t care if you don''t have time to fix it. The only recourse is to appeal the fine. Every one of the inspecters I have delt with from EPA and OSHA think they are GOD, there is no flexibility. The fine for the yellow paint, was caught in the morning and was corrected right away, but the company was still fined because they didn''t use the right shade yellow.

Are you saying OTHER countries have their own Smoot-Hawley thing ALREADY, and WE''''RE getting clobbered by it?????

Posted by repo_man_08

Do not try to tell me that you are unaware that other governments subsidize certain products and conspire to dump goods on the U.S. in order to drive out U.S. businesses and dominate those areas of trade?

So are you saying WE should retaliate like the other countries did for Smoot-Hawley?

Today''''s issues are entirely different, and tariffs and import fees would correct the imbalance.
Posted by hungry686 at 05:17 PM : Feb 07, 2009

Please explain. HOW is it different?
