I know that many athletes and other better off Canadians who have had to cross the border for medical treatment.

Some of the "better off" Canadians cross the border because they figure they are to good to even wait a day. They want, what they want, when they want it.

If I have to wait a week for a specialist appointment, or even two weeks, that isn''t bad considering we ALL have healthcare. I would even be willing to wait 6 months, because I know I will be looked after. No one here is without care. And if it is an emergency, you are first in line. If you go into the hospital and you have a problem, it''s fixed before you leave.

You can always count on them to tell us how bad our country is, how foolish we are etc.
Tell you what dear Canadian friends why don''''t you keep your opinions to yourselves.

Ahhh, I could be mistaken, but if you look back, I didn''t OFFER my opinion, someone started discussing it with ME.

erasmus606,

Actually, I was talking about Vancouver with the family member. The doctor I interviewed practiced in Toronto.

I am surprised you know of no one who has had to wait. I have a family member in Canada who had to wait for more than six months for an operation. I know that many athletes and other better off Canadians who have had to cross the border for medical treatment.

Let me guess, you are talking about Toronto, right?
Toronto is one city, in one province. Now, my brother lives there and he hasn''t had any problems. I don''t know about anyone else.

I''m in western Canada and I have many relatives who have had to have surgeries and specialist visits, and they have had no long waits. The longest wait was 2 months for my mom''s hip replacement. The same for my sister-in-law. My mom also had 2 eye surgeries with in 2 months. My uncle is having surgery next week and that will only be a month. I don''t call that long. And if it''s life threatening, you are FIRST.

One thing is a sure bet....Obama promised change.....American politics better hope he does bring GOOD change for the people,,,,,But I am sadly seeing what I feared the most,,,this change is only going to be a change of figurehead presidents,,,,and the change the people seem to be getting is the money out of our pockets changing into the pockets of the rich and greedy....thanks to the two parties that got us into this mess and lied to us about all this bailout from the get go,,,the congresspiracy of 2009,,to rob America for the sake of the lobby dollar.

GST plus the various province taxes can be painful.

As to your healthcare, it''''s not a perfect system. You are at the mercy of the medical bureaucracy and there are long waiting lists. I recently interviewed for a medical publication a doctor who practiced on both sides of the border and he said they were two extremes, both with faults. He said the Australian system with its mix of public and private practice was better than both.

Well, I don''t know what to say.

I''m not rich and I really don''t find the GST or taxes, painful.

And no, our healthcare isn''t perfect. But we ALL have healthcare. And as far as waits go, I know of no one that has had to wait.

erasmus606,

Canada''''s a nice place, but it''''s got some nasty taxes.

Posted by ausus at 10:47 PM : Jan 13, 2009

I wouldn''t call them nasty. I don''t really hear many complaining. They are a little higher, but it''s worth it. We all have healthcare.

Do you Canadians live in fear?

Posted by repo_man_08 at 10:36 PM : Jan 13, 2009

No. And I think we have had this discussion before and came to the conclusion that it was the Americans that live in fear. Didn''t we?:)

Well, the Irish may give 8-1 odds that the Obama''s will name their puppy George, but I would give that about a 1000-1 longshot. NO WAY :o)

erasmus606,

Actually, I was curious when in your reply to repo_man_08 you said "you better not!" if that was some form of a threat. Are you saying the First Amendment should be repealed? Are you about to form a jackboot army to crush dissent?

Posted by ausus at 10:34 PM : Jan 13, 2009

Ummmm....first off, I''m a Canadian, and I don''t know anything about your "First Amendment".:) I was just teasing repo man.

What wager would you make on the name of the Obamas' puppy?
 George (8-1 odds)
 Lincoln (20-1 odds)
 Joe the Plumber (250-1 odds)
I would never bet on this
