A non issue like reproductive rights that most thinking Americans could care less.. If the media would stop making an issue out of these topics they would simply fade away....
Here is a little lesson on constitutional freedoms. You as an individual can claim all constitutional rights for yourself, and ONLY yourself. You CAN NOT impose ANY beliefs on anyone else through law or policy. You rights are limited to you, not to you and who ever you choose should share your beleifs. Don't agree with gay marriage? Don't marry the same sex. Don't agree with abortion? Don't get one. Don't agree with Islam? Don't practice it. and so on... This is the full extant of EVERYONE'S freedoms.
"The government shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free practice therein." This applies to you, and ONLY you. Not to you, and who you decide to impose it on. Before you through around the "silly" or "socialism" cards, go educate yourself first.
What reason would there be for two men or women to get "married"?. This relationship is just like two roommates living together. Marrige should be left to two people of the opposite sex to do with natual children that may be born into the "family". This will just allow people to get more benefits for each others for free. Don't the bible or our basic morrals mean anything when it comes to the marrige of a couple anymore! This new law makes a mockery of a real marrige between a man and a woman!
The point is there is supposed to be a separation between church and state, so that no one religion can rule over those who do not believe in it. Hence, just because the bible says it's one man and one woman, that shouldn't be the government law, as not all religions recognize this, hence the SEPARATION between church and state. Would you like to be governed by the laws of a religion that was not your own?
magnum, "It's worth noting that PPP polling found one in ten voters thought the measure would legalize same sex marriage, not ban it." I gather you are one of those 1 in 10 voters.
Well, it is easy to see that you aren't an educated person. America doesn't live by the Bible, although many of our laws come from Christian ethics. Two people who love one another and want to live together should be able to marry. Do you want morals in NC to be liberal (like when you go to the beach), or do you want them to be conservatively racist (like when you go to a KKK march in Ashville)? I personally think that there is a large backwards racist, homophobe, pro-death penality/pro life, anti-feminist contingent in the South, but I hope that NC voters are more open than that! Vote well, NC!
So when the voters of Virginia decide to pass a law prohibiting mixed race marriages the that will be "perfectly legal and fine". Just more silliness from Mortar.
How would you like it if your government forced you to follow all the laws that govern the religion of Jedisim? (and yes, I am referring to the Jedi as in star wars, there is an actual religion and followers that adhere to this, and am not making this up). What may be ridiculous to you, is not to others, just as your religion is not what others chose to believe, so....why make an entire country which was founded on the basis of escaping being told they had to follow a religion they did not believe in, follow the laws that govern one specific religion?
Mortar, you "community can set standards" argument is pointless. Community standards are still subject to review by courts and have to conform to current laws and, ultimately, the Constitution. Anti-gay marriage laws will not survive a Supreme Court challenge, unless you can stack it with a few more far right wingers.
I am constantly amazed that people who claim to be conservative and want government out of their private lives seem to have no problem with government dictating who one can and cannot marry. If religious orders chose to define marriage within the context of their beliefs that is just fine but government should not be involved be it same sex or different sex.
Same sex marriage harms no one and no one but those who chose to enter into such a marriage should have any say in it.
If you want to protect the institution of marriage how about banning divorce and cheating on ones partner?
I am so sick of fighting with conservatives - we need to divide into two nations, one that actually believes in freedom, and one where the bible thumpers and oppressors of women and gays can be as backward as they want to be. Divide, and let people choose in which nation they care to live, with others who believe as they do. We cannot reconcile modern scientific thinking with the crippled superstitions of an ignorant past. Straight people are simply that, they are not superior to gay people in any way. Straight people destroy their own families, they breed ignorantly, they cheat and divorce, they abuse their children, gay people have nothing to do with the misery people inflict on themselves. There will always be gay people, you cannot deny them their freedoms and still pledge allegience to our flag. You need your own flag, and your own pledge to your own oppressive and ignorant beliefs. Let the confederate states depart, no one will fight to bring them back this time.
No good. If we split, then all we'd have is a backwards third world nation on our southern border that we would have to take care of anyway. And I'm not talking about Mexico :)
You can't marry children because its illegal. And its illegal because children do not have the mental development to understand what they are doing or to make decisions like this. You can't marry animals because its also illegal. Its illegal because animals are a lower life form and it would be considered cruelty. And you can't marry your sister or brother because its illegal. Its illegal due to the serious genetic problems it would cause. You can't marry more than one person because its illegal. Its illegal because the potential for fraud, monitory or otherwise, is present.
But being gay is legal. Being married is legal. Therefore, per the Equal Protection clause of the Constitution, gay people getting married is legal. Churches don't have to honor it if they don't want, but the government does, You people are always screeching about getting America back following the Constitution. Well, here's a perfect opportunity to do so.
So we are, in fact, free to do whatever we want, as long as it doesn't disrupt society in a harmful way. That's why we establish certain laws. We don't disallow or ban certain things "just because". There has to be a reason, a threat to the public good. And Gay people getting married affects society in no way other than to bother a bunch of far right wing bigots.
You can't just make up a law declaring something illegal, when you have nothing to back up ho the public good would be harmed. Saying that this law makes you right wing bigots feel better knowing gays can't get married is not sufficient. The Equal Protection clause protects the rights of people engaging in non-destructive or public-harmful behavior.
No matter what one personally believes about homosexuals, the fact remains that there is NO LEGAL REASON to deny the right of civil marriage to loving same sex couples. None.
As much as I hate to admit it, Mortar is at least half right (even if he is horribly misguided and disgustingly bigoted). You can pretty much pass any law you wish, and any law can be challenged. In this case, any law limiting to rights to anyone based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or political preference MUST be overturned by virtue of the fact that the Constitution strictly prohibits the limitations of freedoms based on discrimination.
Thank you, Mortard, for making my arguments for me. Debating with you is so easy. I might try a 5th grader next time, it would be way more challenging!
Two gay people getting married does NOTHING to everybody else. It has NO EFFECT on anybody else. But to the bigots, just the mere KNOWLEDGE of two gay people getting married is enough to drive them insane, requiring them to commit GOVERNMENT INTRUSION on the lives of these gay people.
This, from conservatives who screech so long and loudly about government intrusion, supporting the ULTIMATE level of government intruding on people's lives - who one can marry. Not unlike the Nuremberg laws that prohibited Jews from marrying Aryans,
No, only FAR RIGHT WING NUTBAGS who insist on intruding on other peoples' business are repulsed. The rest of us aren't affected by it at all and don't care if gay people get married or not.
By the way, conservative Muslims also feel the same way about gays. Drivel and the Taliban - in lockstep over this issue. LOL.

Scary. You have to wonder who's next.
