Does anyone know what Chen did to bring about such animosity from the Chinese government?
This information seems to be conspicuously missing from news reports?

I heard that he (Chen) left because the well being of his family was being threatened.
I think this makes more sense than the political conspiracy you are postulating.

He exposed a government-sponsored, forced abortion racket in rural areas, and was consequently placed under house arrest by the government. (Apparently the Chinese government can commit illegalities at its own discretion.) People have been killed in China for exposing much less. He is a brave man, and some people's remarks in this column are disgusting in their lack of sympathy and respect. You have called him an "imbecile." Do you know what an imbecile is? The man has no sight, stands up for his convictions, is afraid for his family - and what you offer is no kindness at all, just scorn and vicious remarks. I used to imagine the USA to be a great country filled with wonderful, generous, open-hearted people. Boy, have I changed my mind. One can only hope you're just an ignorant, selfish, uneducated subset, and not an example of the whole.

momnciti says:
for a blind person, he is able to see rather clearly, on how to manipulate the world media, Republicans and everyone else who is trying to make him some big human right symbol. So, as the story goes, he did not ask for asylum while in the US Embassy, once he leaves the embassy he "changes his mind and wants his whole village and his family to be sent to the US. but wait there is more! Then the Chinese put him in a "hospital" but he is allowed by the Chinese secret police to make a phone call while in the "hospital" to a REPUBLICAN congress person and then put on BLAST so all congress can hear, while DEMOCRAT Hilary Clinton is meeting with Chinese officials. Meanwhile magic underwear Rommey is running around eating Papa John pizza, and calling Obama
"shameful" .......and telling Fox News that even Chinese human rights workers should be able to live in mansions, be able to borrow money from their parents to start a business and be able to call the US congress and get someone to actually pick up the phone and listen. Okay, I am getting all the news this week mixed up.....but this story is just a little PHONY, POLITICAL, BS, CRAZZZZZZY

Can we send a private jet to pick up his parents, the wife's parents, their uncles and aunts, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, as well as all the families of those who helped him get to the U.S. Embassy and the person who gave him the phone to make the long distance call to the U.S. Congress etc. He and his wife will be flying back with Hilary.

BTW, has he asked for houses for all the people he's bringing with him?

I have a feeling the Chinese government helped him with that phone call to the Congress just to jerk us around. It's like: you want him, you got him (and the rest of his cohorts).

Sorry but Chen is starting to sound like a Prima donna.
First he slips into the US embassy
Then he says he wants to stay in China in return for a university seat
Then he says he wants he and his entire extended family to come to the US.
Then he's on the phone talking to the US Congress asking for asylum.

If he's being persecuted by the Chinese authorities....HOW IS HE ABLE TO TALK ON THE PHONE TO THE US CONGRESS.
Even I can't do that....and I live here.

This doesn't sound like a very balanced guy to me.

Passport to the US...Denied.

This guy Chen is starting to sound like someone who just wants a greencard.
First he wants to stay in China.
Then we wants he, his family, his brother, their families..to leave with Secretary Clinton to the United States.
Then he gets on the phone and calls Congress.
If the Chinese are keeping him prisoner...how is he able to talk on the phone directly to Congress.

And how do you propose Obama should go about this, assuming China doesn't want to let him go (which they probably don't since he'll have access to a free press if they do)? Send the CIA to sneak him out of the country? Or Seal Team 6? Threaten thermonuclear war? I don't know what Chen expected to come from this, since he knew that his family would be used by the thugs as hostages to guarantee his eventual compliance. I guess we could have kidnapped him and smuggled him out in a diplomatic pouch. And left his family to the tender mercies of the Chinese government.
