David Maraniss - Washington Post wrote the following

The line of polygamists in (Barack) Obama's family can be traced back generations in western Kenya, where it was an accepted practice within the Luo (pronounced LOO-oh) tribe. His great-grandfather, Obama Opiyo, had five wives, including two who were sisters. His grandfather, Hussein Onyango, had at least four wives, one of whom, Akumu, gave birth to the president's father, Barack Obama, before fleeing her abusive husband. Obama Sr. was already married when he left Kenya to study at the University of Hawaii, where he married again. His American wife-to-be, Stanley Ann Dunham, was not yet 18 and unaware of his marital situation when she became pregnant with his namesake son in 1961.

The polygamy issue is and should be a dead one in this election.

Phillip C. Smith, Ph.D.

This is a bit disappointing. Criticizing someone for their family is just kind of mean and cheap and doesn't really say as much about them as what they have done in their own family that they have made and what they have made of their life.

Do you accept Joseph Smith as a prophet?

George Romney's father, Gaskel Romney, only ever had one wife at a time. Thus to claim that George Romney's father came from a "polygamy commune" is false. His grandfather was living in Mexico with his one wife, his grandfather was not a polygamist, although he did remarry after his first wife died.

When you have multiple wives at the same time, you're a polygamist, genius!

Mitt Romney's Great Grandfather moved so he could keep his family intact and continue supporting them. Barack Obama's father fled the United States so he wouldn't have to support his wife and child. Obama's father never told Ann Dunham that he had other wives in Kenya.

Which is the honorable family? Which contains deadbeat dads and cousins?

It appears that Romney has a few "ancestral skeltons" in his closet, so the "birthers" might be well advised to SHUT UP.

Governor Romney's great-grandfather practiced polygamy, not his grandfather. The LDS Church banned the practice in 1890. Mitt's grandfather had one wife. CBS got it wrong in its article. Journalists should be more careful in checking their stories. This is definitely a non-story. As for Mr. BishopRomney, and by the way I take offense at taking someone's name in vain, you sir are full of hate. Does it make you feel better to spew such hate? You have taken a few things and you have twisted and spun them to mean things which are not really true. Too many here to refute. Do you consider yourself a Christian person who is authorized to judge others? Our Savior said "Judge not that ye be not judged." Our Savior also said "A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another? Do you really believe that spewing hate is living a Christ-like life? We all make choices of how we wish to live our lives. I woud never say such things about any other religion. That is not the way I was taught. I was taught that our Heavenly Father loves all his children and if they are doing wrong they should be lovingly and gently guided to better paths.

Romney isn't worried about the media focusing on his polygamous ancestors, he's worried about the media focusing on the hundreds of abusive polygamous sects in Mormon communities Today. And that's what the media will naturally gravitate to if the polygamy story goes viral. Call Utah's attorney general office and ask for a copy of The Primer, a booklet that outlines the top 10-20 polygamous Mormon sects in and around Salt Lake City. The reason Mormons are so secretive about their religion isn't because their religion is any more peculiar than any other religion, it's because Mormons don't want the public to know about the tens of thousands of women and children being enslaved and abused in modern-day polygamous Mormon sects. Anyone who's seen the doc film "Banking On Heaven" knows how serious the polygamy problem is behind Zion's curtain. And what are powerful Mormon legislatures and law enforcement doing about it? Absolutely NOTHING. In fact recently Utah's AG Mark Shurtleff (a Mormon) was ordered to pay 5 million for mishandling the UEP Trust owned by the infamous FLDS polygamists headed by pedophile prophet Warren Jeffs. Mormons are secretive because they have plenty to hide!!!
