"I can say this because I'm not an elected official: the most selfish group in America today is senior citizens. Their demands on Washington are: 'Give us more and more and more.' They have become the new welfare state, and given the size and political clout of this constituency, it's very dangerous. One of the biggest myths in politics today is this idea that grandparents care about their grandkids. What they really care about is that that Social Security check and those Medicare payments are made on a timely basis."

Leigh Ann Caldwell does the story justice as she covers the issue from the two sides it has. Ironically Club For Growth's Chris Chocola is against any growth in the federal minimum wage - a spare $7.25 an hour hardly anyone can support anyone on. Romney isn't liberal by any means, but he's still flesh and blood: he supports gradual increases for the lowest-paid Americans. CFG's Chocola says this will chill business, leaving it uncompetitive. What it might do is share the bulging profits a lot of companies, banks and institutions have harvested over the last 11 years. The poor need some of it, too.

If Newt knew what he was doing, he would immediately return to the Bain Capital-Cayman Island attack stance he was so successful with in South Carolina, including of course gratuitous swipes at the liberal media. Romney's Achilles heel is obvious, and if Newt exploits it, he can climb back into this thing. Otherwise, he's just another GOP echo chamber.

How ironic that one of the few positions progressives and Romney see sort of eye to eye on (assuming he truly believes what he says about the minimum wage) would be the very thing that is most likely to hurt him the most during the run up to the Republican nomination...

Raising the minimum wage isn't going to get anybody back to work. Minimum wage laws increase unemployment, especially among the under 25 crowd.

Then why have 10 states raised the minimum wage HIGHER than the federal minimum wage? Do you really think that ALL of those lawmakers in those 10 states are trying to hurt their own states growth and prosperity?

Taken into account for inflation the minimum wage in 1969 is equivalent to $10.21 per hour in today's money. So if anything it has effectively gone down and buys alot less than it did in 1969!

Mike, imagine what a paradise we'd create if we just paid people 10 cents an hour! Why, then we'd be fully competitive with China, India, and Mexico. Why import stuff made with cheap Chinese labor if you could make it instead with cheap American labor! This will also meet the Republican goal of low taxes for everyone, after all if you only earn 10 cents an hour, there is not much tax you could collect; this further meets the Republican goal of reducing the federal government to the equivalent of Haiti. Not only that, but then the Mexicans wouldn't try to cross the border in search of higher wages. And if Americans don't want to work for 10 cents an hour, they can all join the Army and go fight in the new Republican war in Iran! Oh, I'm sooooo looking forward to our Republican future.
