The only way this works as totally verifiable law and not more congressional BS is to suspend ALL trading by any elected official during their period of service. End of story. The second provision of that bill should be to make a felony the acceptance of payment for services rendered as a lobbyist by an ex-member of congress. For life. Quit screwing around and get it done.

yup but god knows that wont happen, but it goes way further than that, anyone with more than 100K a year job excluded from ANY office ever. the rich cant write rules to govern the poor its that simple. and all these ******* in office should be marched into a gas chamber.

Insider trading, who cares. Everyone's been doing it since the stock market was created.

What we should be doing is taking the profits from these companies posting billions per quarter, "Oil,Pharmaceutical and Utility Companies for example"and using those profits to pay of the national debt. This country doesn't belong to us anymore. We need to get back on the Gold standard, and not buy what we can't afford. If they want to overcharge us for gas, electricity and medicine, so be it, but those profits should go back to the people, not corporate executives.

If ethics and morals isn't enough, then add amendment to constitution stopping this behavior. Better add punishment, no pardon allowed.

Same hurdle with Amendment as with getting law through Congress: an Amendment to constitution requires Congressal "proposal" which is a two-thirds majority vote in both Senate and House. So you still need Congress to act on it inititially. Then it must go to state legislatures for ratification; 3/4 of states must pass it and then it is formally part of our Constitution (amendments).

Alternatively, instead of Congress being involved, a constitutional convention can be called by 2/3 of state legislatures, so I guess that would require 34 states. Good luck with that - state legislators are every bit as much on the take as Congress. btw, none of the 27 amendments to the Constitution has been through constitutional convention.

Your last point - you want sanctions (punishment) with this as well? Right, Congress is going to pass anything that results in big fines and prison time for themselves. Not.

It's pretty pathetic... Congressmen and women and sitting judges on the SCOTUS get a pass on insider trading, and get super rich... Congressmen and women are bought and sold on a daily basis to the highest bidder with the cash carried by corporate lobbyists... Congressional coverups are a daily occurrence... laws and tax code are put in place by congress to benefit the rich

I don't think there are any more ethics, morals, or principles to be found in congress, Washington, statehouses, or local governments anywhere in the country. They are all on the take. No wonder people want to be elected to Congress.

I don't see how we reclaim our country either. It would take congress and the courts to make real reform, and that is not in their best interest - for starters, a lot of them would be in prison. The USA has really become some sort of communist/fascist/totalitarian oligarchic plutocracy state controlled by a relative handful of **********. Someday there may be a violent uprising, but probably not in my lifetime.

Maybe we can put the entire Congress in prison and start over. They have been useless anyway. Just serving an insane president. We should exempt a few Republicans though and jail obama

MakemStop -- that would be unconstitutional.

I am for taking this law a step further:

No member of congress and no sitting Fed president may hold any securities other than Treasury instruments. This way they'll have a vested interest in our country's credit rating and to minimize inflation via central bank interest rates.
