It was Science that declared that at the moment of conception, the fertilized egg developed a completely New DNA, which means that a new Human Being has come about. It was Not a religious decision for the religious people had no indication as to when human life started. Therefore, in Civil Law, it must be recognized that we are dealing with a human being, and is therefore NOT PROPERTY of anybody, unless you use the Dred Scott decision which declared that a human being could be Property of another human being. The notion of Personhood recognizes that each human being is an individual, and our Declaration of Independence, as ancillary to the Constitution, written by the same basic group of people, says that "All men are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, and among these are the rights to LIFE..." People have been dealing with fertilized human eggs as if they were objects in a Supermarket. NO! They are Human Beings, no matter at what an early stage of development. Are we then to contemplate those in a coma, or Alzheimer's patients, etc. no longer Human or Persons? Ethics have been tossed out the door by many Scientists who disgrace the name, by pandering politicians, by neo-eugenists. "You want eggs or sperm? We got 'em". "You want human spare-part embryos? We got 'em" "You want ethics? --Ethics?? You gotta be kidding, guy! This is big business!" "Hey, come and get your clones here! Make you own work-force that is your property. Guaranteed results!" That's "ethics" nowadays.
It's not as simple as you seem to think. A fertilized egg has no independent life as a "human being". It's human, as opposed to being a monkey, but it's not an entity that can survive outside the womb. It has the capacity to develop into a full-fledged human being with all the rights that the law confers. An egg or a sperm also has the capacity, with modifications, to develop into a human being. But absent those modifications and cell growth, an embryo is simply a collection of cells. And it would have been tragic if the voters had forced women who are victims of rape or incest to give birth to the criminal's child or allowed the death of a pregnant women if a choice had to be made between the mother's or fetus's life. That's horrific compared to the loss of an embryo. There's a big difference between an adult in a coma and an embryo. If you can't understand that, there's no point arguing further. I feel better about the voters' intelligence in MS now.
Mississippi thinks eggs are people, and the Supreme Court thinks corporations are people. Does this mean corporate eggs will be people? All those tasty eggs you buy at the supermarket? People. That Egg McMuffin you ate for breakfast? People. Quiche? People, too. It's a scary thought, unless you're a cannibal.

Mississippi doesn't think Eggs are people. They think Fertilized eggs with a new human DNA are people, as science would say. Corporations are legal "persons", not human persons. The eggs you eat at McDonalds etc., are not Human eggs, unless You are willing to eat fertilized human eggs. Are you? Brett, you lose.
First San Francisco bans Happy Meals and then circumcision. You can bet your last dime that we will not pass such a stupid unconstitutional law in California. San Francisco maybe but We NEVER vote against abortion in California.
I am so tired of hippie radicals coming to our state and causing havoc with some of these stupid ideas.
What's so "unconstitutional" about voting against killing unborn human beings? They are not part of the mother's body. Are they the Property of the mother? Then the Dred Scott decision was right; people can be property of other people. Or do you believe that people who have power of attorney over relatives in a coma or who are Alzheimer's patients can be snuffed out as being an inconvenience?
Until there is NO MORE child abuse in this country, then you can start in on your "every child is a person at the moment of conception." Let's take care of the ones who have been given life only to have emotional, physical and/or sexual abuse rain down upon their innocent souls. Refocus your attention. And yes, this issue isn't "sexy" like the anti-abortion one, but it is more prevalent and has much longer lasting consequences. Pray for those who are alive and walking on this Earth, bearing scars and witnessing violence at early ages. Why don't you go after those who kill their own children--after birth?! That cycle of brutality has got to stop!
Hello! Do we go after "those that kill their own children--after birth" already? Let's take care of the children we have and let people kill adults, following your logic by focusing on only one element. Refocus your attention.
What about couples who are unable to conceive a child? I guess they'll have to get their fertility treatments in a more progressive state....like Alabama.
Fertility treatments are not affected by this, unless you're talking about playing around with fertilized human eggs with a new human DNA and treating them as if they were not beginning human beings. Let's pretend they're not?
The law already recognizes the difference between a fertilized egg, an embryo, a fetus, an infant, and an adult. I guess those poor people in Mississippi can't be bothered to think very hard about it. The evangelicals claim that an embryo should have all the rights of an adult person, even though they are vastly dissimilar. Should pregnant women who have miscarriages be prosecuted for murder? Should various forms of birth control be made criminal? This whole issue is one that originates from evangelical simple-mindedness, where everything is either black or white with no nuance whatsoever. Perfect for simpletons who don't like to exercise their brains.
