The Republicans want perpetual war, their war on terror was ment to last for years, and years, and years...

so may years that new generations would accept war as the normal state because they would never know any different.

IS THAT ACTUALLY RATIONAL?

cmc1227 said, "So, what I understand from Obama's speech is that due to our torturing, our (own) people are going to be 'mistreated' worse than death. Is that actually possible?"
---

People from your own GOP have made the same point Obama raised.

For example, Sen. Lindsey Graham and Sen. John McCain regard torture as a "hot-button" threat to the safety of our troops, not simply in Iraq, but anywhere US troops are captured.

Despite their statements, you comment that all US troops captured in Iraq have been killed, so that renders prisoner treatment issues "irrelevant".

Not even close-- captured Americans have figured large in every US conflict, especially Vietnam.

Even in Iraq-- remember Jessica Lynch? The Pentagon used her as a poster child for prisoner mistreatment-- replete with false claims about her fighting like a tiger to resist capture, etc.

The Iraqis actually moved Lynch to a regional hospital, where she was recovered (in what was described as good condition) after a tip to US forces.

alphaa10000,

If you will re-read my statement you will see that I noted: "Can anybody name one person, other than the POW's from the initial war, that are still alive after being captured"?

Want to try again dumbazz?

Cheney was wrong and you are FULL of it if you think torture is right. Volunteer yourself to be waterboarded if it is so good. Ever heard of the Geneva Convention?

You know what I think I would have voted for Jesse for president.

My god you really have to respect a guy who calls it like he sees it.

That?s the problem with politicians today. They say what they think people want to hear and try not to upset anyone. Not Jesse, he does not give a sheet, he just says it the way it is. I admire his blunt honesty.

Proof that Cheney knows his position is not legal, lies in the fact that he calls it "Enhanced Interrogation." Cheney can't even call it what it really is: "Torture." Cheney the flim-flam "Smoke & Mirrors" con artist. Make no mistake about it. This is and always has been an attempt by the Bush\Cheney regime to justify "Torture" as a means of interrogation, on the errant grounds that "the ends justify the means." This is a debate about whether "torture" should be allowed for interrogating terrorist suspects. When you acknowledge the enormously large number of 'terror suspects' who were released for lack of evidence, and when you acknowledge the fact that torture primarily elicits false information, it becomes unmistakably clear why "torture" is morally, logically, militarily, ethically and constitutionally impermissible.

Cheney is RIGHT!

Do we want terrorists roaming our streets, plotting to kill innocent Americans?

Cheney is RIGHT! We need to be as bad as the terrorists in order to fight them! We need torture! We need to be able to "shock and awe" countries that might have WMDs. The thousands of innocent dead children are regrettable, but they were worth it! So were our 4,000 dead troops and all the suicides, divorces and ruined families of our troops. Gitmo, Abu Gharib amd Shock and Awe were GREAT - showed the terrorists that we can be just as brutal as they are - BRING EM ON!

If our torture, civilian massacres, and wars based on lies help recruit terrorists, well SO WHAT! They probably would be terrorists anyway so lets go KILL EM. Torture them. Kill their children, Bomb their cities. God Bless America ZGod bless Cheney God Bless our guns, bombs and torture programs. God Bless our dead troops.

As Jesus said, kill them before they kill us! (that is what he said, right?)

As if to make the point about substituting such gut-level responses for thoughtful criticism, Enron CEO Ken Lay was famous for his trust-inspiring "preacher" approach to stockholders. If ever challenged with the facts, his response was to focus his gaze on the questioner and pump out more lies.

What nonsense. Had you bothered to even glance at the record, you would know that Ken Lay believed the company to be strong.

On the very day Enron finally collapsed, Lay had convinced yet another Enron staffer to throw his personal vote and retirement funds with Enron.

Total crap. This is a lie. Enron filed for bankruptcy at 12:02am on December 2, 2001. The next morning, people were fired before 9am. So when exactly that morning did Ken Lay convince anyone to "vote" (***?) And by the way, the retirement accounts were changing administrators and had not been touched since October. There was no opportunity to do anything with the funds.

Even today, Texas, and Dallas, in particular, glows white-hot with indignation from ordinary, befuddled Enron stockholders who should have known better, but found it comfortable to take somebody's word in place of the facts.

You mean Houston, where Enron was headquartered.

Their anger is focused on Lay and Jeffrey Skilling, of course, but also on themselves. They should-- and did-- know better.

Agreed.
