Are you really this uninformed? *** want that "piece of paper" because it protects their assets, their children, their social security benfits, their right to make medical decisions for their partner, including end of life decisions. There are literally thousands of protections for married people in the tax law, civil law, etc. That is what they want, just like every other American. Call it what ever you like, but they need the federal protections.
