By all means Mr. Obama should not interfere with America seeing as much as possible of the republican "field" the more they see of Mrs Bachman whose husband apparently has veto power over her decisions, and Mr. Perry one of whose chief supporters has publicly stated that the Democratic party is "led by the demon Jezebel and three other lesser demons, I once saw her at a Democratic rally and when she raised her skirt I saw the lesser demons around her skinny legs" the more votes Mr. Obama will secure. If republicans thought they would have moved their debate to 9:00 and then could have spent their time repudiating or parsing or trashing or whatever what he said. But then thinking and republicans is mutually exclusive, someone needed to give them a "pledge" to sign.

Well, like most of the time the extrems are here and in DC. I think we are in a mode that will not change until after 2012. 2010 was not enough and the lifers in DC still don't get it. Once the middle and the independents have the chance they will vote whats right for the country and it will not be from the right or the left.

Actually Mr. Carney, Americans are paying attention to this. After all it is so much simpler to snark about insignificant tidbits than have thoughtful discussion about complex and real issues. You are witnessing the final throes of the dumbing down of America. I'm surprised we can still walk and talk at the at the same time.

Republican Congress crashes world markets, goes on vacation for over a month, and the first day back they take a day off to watch debates for an election that is over a tear away. It is party first, the country can rot, for the lazy, do nothing but attack the president, fanatics. There is no republican candidate that has a chance to beat the president. They think they can intimidate voters with name calling and threats. Republicans have no credibility.

"I think most Americans are probably not paying attention to this."

"We want to focus on the big issues, not the side shows."

Jay Carney, you are sorely mistaken if you think the American people are as stupid as YOU are. Whoever obama's advisors are they should all be fired. If they weren't aware that a GOP debate was scheduled months in advance for this date, they are incompetent. As for "not wanting to focus on the sideshow" -- YOU CREATED THE SIDESHOW! And if the focus of obama's speech is another "stimulus" he's going to get run out of town on a rail. And if he tries to sell another stimulus as the panacea for jobs and the economy and position anyone who disagrees as an obstructionist, he's going to get steamrolled. And if there aren't DETAILS and SPECIFICS in this speech, most Americans are going to be laughing because he will come across as full of hot air and clueless.

if nobody cares about sideshows why is this administration constantly creating them?

If this "urgent session" was really urgent why did the Chief Clown wait till now? Why did he spend two weeks on the golf course? Why did he wait till after all those political leeches came back from vacation? You can bet the farm his "major speech" will be nothing more than another lame campaign speech that everyone has heard a 1000 times.

Obama is not getting it. Compromise with the republicans does not work. This strategy of trying to always look like the adult in the room is not working and Daley and Co. should abandon it like the plague. The President must rile up his base and attack the republican viciously and in a strongly partisan manner. The President has to show leadership on jobs....because the republicans are not going to do anything to help the country. To help the country in their little narcissistic psyches is to help the President. They are far too corrupt and selfish to do something because it is good for the country and because suffering Americans need it. A vote for a Climate Change denying republican is a vote against humanity.

How condescending! This American IS paying attention. This was a cheap shot by the white house trying to preempt the republican debate that backfired on them. Obama's speech to congress is just that - a speech to outline his jobs "plan". Where was his plan a year ago? This is going to be nothing more than a campaign speech.

Whether you are a Dem, Tea Bagger, Rep or anything else, it behooves each of you to actually read about and listen to ALL sides. The 2012 election is going to be a vital, pivotal moment for this country and a good voter is a well informed voter.

OMG! You're suggesting people think for themselves instead of being red or blue sheep? Are you seriously suggesting people hold their elected "officials" accountable? You want people to vote with their head? You, my dear Sir, are a wonderfully refreshing breath of fresh air! Thank you!

I respectfully disagree. I'm perfectly sure the majority of the people like me, shake their heads at this frivolous, time-wasting story, and "pay attention" only to how disgracefully acerbic the mood has become in Washington, even with a centrist President. This non-story is calculated diversion from serious issues, and it would be better, frankly, if it were not paid attention to. Don't the media have anything better to report on? I feel the President speaks for the people when he says "enough already!"

The U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday that productivity declined at an annual rate of 0.7 percent in the April-June period, a bigger drop than the 0.3 percent decline reported a month ago. Labor costs rose at an annual rate of 3.3 percent, faster than the 2.4 percent increase originally reported.

So it is costing more to produce less. There is a fundamental problem and more pressure to outsource. How anyone expects government to fix that without a huge inflation spike I don't know. More and more we just don't want to work for a living. Handout please.
