The article leaves out the main culprit, the American people, mainly the voters, who demand all sorts of benefits from their government, without the willingness to pay for it.

How can you just blindly continue to follow this president? Where was his plan? Why has there not been one budget presented to congress since he became president in 2008? There is a reason that you need someone with some experience to become president. He is the classic sit-back and do nothing guy who then piles on and takes credit or passes blame around.

Why do you not have a problem with all of his golf course, fund-raising and vacation outings during this terrible time of crisis over the last few years?! Why couldn't he spend some time coming up with a plan of his own?! He inherited a 5.7% unemployment rate and a AAA credit rating. He has done nothing but spend us into oblivion. Under Obama, our national debt and deficit have skyrocketed higher than all other presidents in history combined. Spending on social programs, although it sounds very nice, does not bring the economy roaring back. Like it or not, it stagnates it because there is a business uncertainty and unwillingness to hire new employees because it is just too expensive when projecting out into the future. If you give the average American a choice about whether or not they want more social programs or a job, I would say 99.9% of the time, the person, regardless of their political leanings, wants a job. We are pricing ourselves out of the world markets. It's amazing to me how people cannot see through all of this!!! Hope and Change...hope for what and change to what...a third world country!!

His Ivy-League professors were wrong and that is what he has based his entire political philosphy upon. He has no real-world experience in running a business and his dirty laundry is showing!

katintex -- Unfortunately, there are multiple fundamental flaws in your analysis. First of all, the unemployment rate was 7.8% in January 2009 when Obama took office, NOT 5.7%. Second, the economic recession -- the deepest in the postwar era -- began before he took office; unemployment was heading up no matter who took over the White House. Third, the increase in spending has not simply been on social programs. Part of it consists of the stimulus, which according to the nonpartisan analysis of the Congressional Budget Office, protected a substantial number of jobs and prevented the economic downturn from being far worse. Another part involves increased unemployment benefits associated with the rise in unemployment. Fourth, a good deal of the deficit has to do with a decline in revenues resulting from tax cuts and the recession. And, finally, the idea that "Obama had no plan" is a right-wing talking point that is repeated over and over again, and is untrue. The Obama administration offered several different variants of a deal, none of which Republican House Speaker Boehner could accept because he could not get the support of the Tea Party faction of his own party.

Why do I think members of Congress of both parties, who knew that this downgrading was coming upon our nation said to each other "let them eat bread" while we continue eating, drnking and being merry one as our nation gradually become socialistic.

I think both sides did their share of spending. However, the president's signature legislation is a $1 trillion entitlement program call healthcare Reform. He's been trying his best to low-ball the actual cost and has been trying for a tax hike his whole term. Of course they didn't bundle a tax hike with health care reform, no one would have voted for it. The goal has always been to pass it first and get the tax hike later. This is clearly what the president has been trying to do. If something is unfunded, it shouldn't pass, no matter how nice a thing it is to do. Let's not forget the $1 trillion money grab called a stimulus. I think the president & the democrats passed things assuming a tax hike would be easy to slip in later. He didn't count on half the party getting voted out in the mid terms. The president now has to face the music and pull back what can't be paid for. He knew this crisis would come and he's playing it to get the tax hikes he's been wanting all along. Don't give them to him.

We all need to look in the mirror of our national debt and see our own reflections. We too are at fault for this national crisis...we are a nation of entitlements "You owe me" and a greedy people "I want it NOW" so "charge it".
Our national leaders are a product of our culture, they are no better or worst than us average citizens.
We have become a wealthy, greedy, corrupt, selfish and deceptful people. Maybe we should read the Book of Amos in Sacred Scripture and see for ourselves what happens to a nation that becomes wealthy and greedy?

I agree with your point. We all are responsible for this mess. The Tea Party was the first group to try to tackle the spending problem in a comprehensive way. Their approach would stop the bleeding of the debt, but to heal the debt and pay it off, we will inevitably need to raise taxes on the middle and upper classes. I am a middle class person with 3 kids, and I know we've got to pay this off. I think 3 tax brackets would be fair:
1) the people who pay nothing (which should be the people who can't work)
2) the people who pay are working, but have little spare money (just to pay the budget)
3) the middle and upper class (to pay the budget and to pay off the debt)
After the debt is paid off we should just have 2 tax brackets. We are all in this together, if people don't want to work to fix this country, then they can leave it. The fewer people standing in the way the better. Take care all, I'll be working. :)
