Could it be that Americans have finally come to understand that no matter what Fox or the morons on clear channel say, the republicans created the problem, want to continue the problem, are working to extend the problem, and therefore ARE the problem, and always have been the problem. Vote intelligence not greed!

A trillion+ in spending solely by Democrats and the Republicans are the problem?

I can only hope that you are correct. But Americans have short memories. Again and again the Republicans severely abuse the average American. Then the Republicans come up with some bogus issue and claim that the Democrats are going to destroy marriage and be subservient to a gay agenda or that the Democrats are promoting "baby killing" and they stampede enough people to vote Republican again. Look what happened in Wisconsin. A lot of union workers deserted the Democrats in 2010 for various reason. Look at what payback they got. But will they even care anymore by 2012? Well, maybe this time.

Spoken like a true entitlement recipient have-not. We cannot keep funding the entitlement hordes who refuse to work and are increasing in numbers daily thanks to Oboza. It's quite possible that the voting block of scumbags will become a majority. Then what? No money for their big screens, subsidized cell phones, EBT cards, and section 8 housing? Those with resources will be fine but these parasites will be the first to create major civil unrest when they don't get their freebies.

"Spoken like a true entitlement recipient have-not." Hmmm, a 9 figure ANNUAL income and I'm a "have not"? Truer words were never spoken by any republican. I can also prove a 177 I Q and 42 years in service of this nation. I'm a realist, independant, and able to understand that for every action there is an equal and oppisite reaction. When you learn that simple principal you will understand economics and you also can have REAL money.

Anyone with an IQ of 177 would know the difference between "principal" and principle". You are clearly delusional evidenced by taking the time to spew nonsensical rubbish regarding your imaginary superiority as if you and Newton shared some secret. The rest of us dummies, who aren't even members of MENSA, can certainly get along and understand basics. You are a joke Mr. "9 figure" bozo. I would opine that you have been on welfare for 42 years. Have a great day.

President obama threatens to hold social security checks to seniors, but cutting spending on his high-speed rail system is off the table.

I am sure that payments for developing the rail system would stop before Social Security checks. We obviously have the economic and financial wherewithall to cover both and, in fact, everything else that is already committed to by law. What Obama is saying is that the Republican refusal to raise the debt limit will throw a huge monkey wrench into the machinery of government so that we will have, among other bad things, a cash flow crisis that is totally unnecessary but which nonetheless will be severe.

If Repubicans remain intransiegent, I assume that Obama actually will find a way to preserve the necessary and important things such as social security checks and veterans benefit checks while holding up unnecessary payments such as those for military pork barrel projects. But it will be hard to do prioritize cash rapidly. Also, he really does have the authority to continue the payments anyway, not only under the 14th Amendment but also because of the fact that almost all of the appropriation, if not all of them, were passed AFTER the debt ceiling law. Thus, implicitly, they repealed that law already for the purpose of those expenditures. But there could be some complex legal roadblocks in doing it this way. so there could be delays in various checks.

On top of all that, the Fed (and probably independently the Treasury Department) can issue more money without Congressional approval. If the Treasury wished, it could print out three one trillion dollar bills and fund us that way. It could probably even make the prime rate NEGATIVE as a way of producing some needed monetary expansion. The problem with these methods are 1) the lag time, again there would be delays and 2) loss of confidence in the dollar. But "monetizing" at least part of the debt by creating new money would be preferable to default. I do not want to see it get to that point. But if it does, that is exactly what Obama and the Fed should do to keep the money flowing.

It doesn't take a "poll" to show the country that political theater and posturing are still alive and well in Washington. We have seen nothing but childish antics from the Repubs since President Obama was elected. They have an unbridled hatred for him and whatever he is "for"...they are "against", automatically. They need to start using common sense voting and leave their hatred out of it. Their only interest it seems is to get rid of the President....not to do what is best for the country. The American people are getting a little weary of their games.

The childish antics are ALL obama; a president that interferes with the Cambridge police department, that tries to micro-manage state affairs... obsessed with FOX News...these are all "antics" unbecoming of the office of the president. Not to mention the "games" he's playing with the US economy.

I agree. But unless we want to see the Republicans take over entirely and entirely destroy our freedoms, we need to start right now contributing to Obama's campaign and getting involved in supporting the Democrats in 2012. Otherwise this crisis will pass and the Republicans will figure out some way of suppressing the votes of the moderates and liberals and they will win again. Even if we do not like everything Obama is trying to do, he is the only hope for our country in 2012. We need to re-elect Obama and put the Democrats in strong control of both Houses.

reubenrcbs says:
What we have here is basically a group of people that have painted themselves in to an irrational corner and call it balanced. To think that we do not need to do something about revenue, about tax loopholes, about the tax code in general, is either a Tea Party person or someone who just doesn't understand how to balance a budget and the need to adjust income vs. outgo in different periods of time. One size doesn't fit all, so, when it comes to the Republican proposals. People understand that because they are excercising their common sense and are not ideological idiots. We had many good years and revenues increased naturally, then boom, and we were caught with our trousers down. Everyone knows that spending creates demand but the government was straddled with the lowest tax rate since WWII, the Big One, and had no where to go. This is not the place to be, so a balanced budget amendment is the final stamp of insanity on the Republician side of the aisle, since when would you lock yourself in to such a situation. What happens if the washing machine breaks? Well lets see; don't do the laundry and just save up? or buy what you need now, do your laundry, and pay it off as you go? Duh! These people are so out of touch with reality, it's scary. No wonder they can't get anything accomplished and need someone to beat them with a stick up until the last minute, then they do what could have been done a year ago.

For brian1920, who like most Republicans can not obsess over more than one point at a time, the key is balanced approach. Cutting spending and adequate resources. If your budget was stressed, would just cut out eating, or would you look for a second job and increase your revenue? I shouldn't of asked.

You are right. We should have paid for the war (at least somewhat more) as we went along. The Bush tax cuts certainly hurt us. The more we put the economy in a straitjack, either with a deficit limit or (even worse) a balanced budget amendment, the more we will kill of economic growth. I suspect that at least some of the Republicans actually know this.

You probably don't want to hear from this American, but here are my thoughts anyway. Congress and the president need to grow up. I remember President Obama saying that Americans are demanding more services. Infants and toddlers "demand" things. I am not surprised Mr Obama just thins giving constituents anything they want, because he seems to run in the same immature, irresponsible vein. Here is the truth about money, no matter what your worthless polls think: it belongs to us, the American people. We work for it and it is ours. We do not wanted bloated governments thinking they have the right to determine our lives. We want to determine our lives, our destinies. So to Congress and President Obama I say: grow up, get your own jobs. If you want the rich to care for your voting constituencies, I suggest you grow a spine, some muscles, some principles and all go out and get real jobs and you can donate everything you make to make your own communities better. Until you are capable of doing that, please don't assume to keep spending the money earned by the hard working, intelligent, daring, committed citizens of this country. Shame on CBS for posting this as news, and Google too. What a bunch of manipulative, dishonest power-mongers you have become. Grow some principles too, please.

America is in the economic mess that it is in because the health of our economy began slipping away years ago. To attribute our economic mess to nanny state spending is wrong headed. Scapegoating will not correct the core problem. "United we stand, divided we fall."
