Progressives are concerned with how much money they can confiscate from Americans. I am not rich, but it is not their money. It is time to concentrate on reducing the size and scope of the federal government to a manageable level. It is the outrageous over spending of progressives that has gotten the country in such dire fiscal trouble.

Let's put this massive overspending in perspective: A 2005 Washington Post article stated that had a "$318.62 billion deficit" for the 2004 year. This was for the entire YEAR!!!!!! Today, the idiots in Washington are over spending at the rate of $222.5 billion IN A MONTH!!!!!! This is totally insane.

We kept the same tax level as when President Bush was in office, so the huge deficits are not the result of changes in tax - it is purely the cause of massive changes in federal over spending. We have tried the way of progressives, and the country has almost come to ruin. They tried in Europe, and it has bankrupted several nations.

Progressives may have good intentions, but the ideas put in place are not practical. Philosophical dreaming is one thing, but what we need is practical solutions. We have gone way too far in attempting to implement unworkable progressive ideas. We need to start reigning in government, and leave people with more of their hard earned money. $14 trillion in national debt is horrible, and it is massively irresponsible. Projections of adding another $1.65 trillion to it this year is insane.

Back in 2005, we had a 5% unemployment rate, and for some reason the Iraq war wa snot considered part of the budget spending, and therefore not part of the deficit.

You are right, itt not their money...its OUR money. Americans want good schools, police to protect them, firemen to put out fires, bridges and roads fixed, a strong military, social security and medicare. You need revenues to provide these services.

We can't cut our way out of this, we need to BOTH cut and raise some taxes, but both need to be done in a way that does not put us back into a recession.

What about a flat tax - everyone pays the same percentage, with no limit on the FICA. The only deductions would be for number of people in the household under 18 or 21. People who make less than $24,000 would be exempt. Hopefully, the progressives realize that people making 10x more than they - would be paying 10x more in taxes. Brackets would be unnecessary. What if it could be a low percentage - like 10%, since almost everyone would be paying?

Agreed Tricle down failed. Exporting Jobs. Do not blame the uber rich for that. Blame City/State/Federal governements at all levels who make it so a company MUST export low end jobs to foreign countries to just stay in business. This sickens me that people blame someone else for this. Trickle down is a failure but supply and demand are still alive and well. Make it cheaper to hire someone I will bet money that if given a choice most people that chose to have something done overseas would prefer to do it here.

If you are big on jobs here is a case of reality. Low end jobs that you could walk into with a high school education and specialized traing. Those days are gone and will NEVER come back. Back to supply and demand most jobs that need a warm body have either been automated or yes exported. Manufacturing does occur in the US but not in the same manner as it once did. Our economy has changed some say for the worse. If you think our economy should be producing those low end unskilled jobs they you would be one of them.

WastingtonDC: The beauty of this Californication style plan to fail, is that $78B is a near zero percentage of the Trillion plus annual Deficit the same feckless louts are condemning Americans to hyperinflation to monetize. We have noticed that, but they don't believe our last election lesson. Better yet, the Labor Unions and the billionaires like Soros who are providing a billion or more to re-elect the weakling abamination, now clearly guilty of condemning hundreds of millions of Middle East humans, proved ready to live free or die, to be murdered or re-enslaved by their failing dictators, are still going to pour the money into The Ones re-coronation campaign. Watching the Levant's peoples die for liberty, with the abaminations prayers, and best wishes, half a billion in union members stolen dues will be poured into demoncrat coffers, because the union members want socialist rule, ie, union rule waste, at any cost, and will support any politician willing to be wholly owned by the Unions. The billionaires providing the other half of the campaign funds apparently have tax lawyers able to read and create tax avoidance approaches for each new tax regime, faster than the government louts who add more pounds to an already overweight truck load of tax folly documents. Worst, they may simply want socialism now, at any cost to individual liberty, including its extinction, on planet earth, as has happened in every socialist experiment nation to date.

Best of all, like the Bell City Californication criminals, these clowns have no clue that America is awakening, and their time in office is going to be ended, in Novembers to come. Keep that Hope and Change coming guys, and we'll say, Good Riddance! now, and Good Bye, come November.

Continue to make the cuts against the social programs, quit allowing people to draw Social Security having never paid into it, control the Medical and Insurance Industries to reel in Medicare and Medicade costs and trim the Miltary Machine. The taxation recommendation is an additional insight which I welcome. The wealthiest Americans have been monopolizing the government, Wall Street, and Corporate America long enough without a thought about helping the workers who made them their monies. If people like Warren buffet, Bill Gates and other wealthy individuals can afford to give Billions away in charity, let their charity pay off the deficit.

I agree with your comment FreeAmerica. However, Buffett and Gates have both asked to be taxed (as opposed to average earners) because they can afford it. It's not these guys, who are extremely generous that I'm worried about. It's those wealthy individuals and multi-national corporations who have nothing but ice running through their veins that concern me. They find nothing wrong with paying no (Note: this means ZERO) income taxes at all. Additionally, they have so many write-offs, offsets and deductions that enable this type of injustice.

The richest 5% in America own 55% of the assets. The richest 20% own 85% of the assets. And the poorest 50% own 2.5% of the assets. To ask the poorest 50% to pony up like the rich people do is not fair.

The US has the greatest income disparity of all the advanced economies in the world except for Luxembourg (and they're much wealthier than we are).

It boggles my mind that middle class people vehemently defend the privileges of the uber rich and at the same time propose cuts in social programs like education, head start, and social security.

These defenders of the rich have a philosophy: To protect our children and their children, we must cut their access to education and nutrition.

Fair? Fair isnt taking more from one person than another...no matter what they have.

First off, it is theirs. No matter if they make $20,000 or $20 million. It is their money. To say we are going to confiscate 50% of the guy making $20 million, but take nothing from the one making $20,000...that is not fair. And it is immoral!!

That is why we must do away with taxes on income. Let everyone keep everything they make!!

Just tax consumption. That way EVERYONE pays and EVERYONE pays the same rate.

salary, profits, dividend, interest are all taxed. Death is taxed. But that is not enough. The Dems are really bent on chasing out all rich people who create jobs. Perhaps they'll take the jobs with them. I seem to recall the rich fleeing the UK when they did the same thing.
So what is the rich's fair share? Perhaps if Congress stopped taking the bribes from special interests that create tax dodges and instituted a flat tax, the rich may actual pay their fair share. This bill will just make more jobs for tax lawyers.

Mortar.... would the wealthy have gotten where they are without being empowered by the great infrastructure and research supported by the government? The answer in most cases is NO - see, its in their best interest to pay more to support the things that enabled them to get rich, including the middle class workers!
doctor_know replies:

It IS fair to ask rich people to pay more because they have benefited the most from the US economy. They should therefore pay more taxes to keep the country that made them wealthy as productive as possible. This requires some government investment in infrastructure and long term investments such as education and scientific research...

IT is fair to ask the wealthy to pay more taxes because they are the ones who have benefited the most from the US economy. It is in their own interest to keep the US economy strong, and the government needs to be able to make long term investments in things like infrastructure, education, and science in order to for this to happen.

That's the problem; the ones at the bottom are supporting the ones at the top. We should have income limitations; there is no reason for people to be making over $500,000 a year. Everything above that should be taken in taxes, they have a responsibility to the country that made them rich. Let the people vote on it in Plebiscite, let the majority decide how much they can make.

No, rather get rid of Social Security and Medicare, and let the old starve and lose their homes. Take the vote to the people, see how long the gluttons will last then.

skeptical- so no matter how hard you work you could not go over a certain limit of income. So much for personal drive and initiative. That;s about the dumbest idea I;ve ever heard. Worthy of Karl Marx. That would immediately say to some one who wants to make it big here, don't bother coming and create jobs. Why not just decide what jobs people should go into based on the needs of the party, and create 5 year plans while you are at it. Then we can reform the Soviet Union. What a idiotic idea.

If your son is your dependent, then he doesn't get the tax deductions that he would get living on his own. Once he is no longer a student, begins working full time, and is no longer your dependent he will likely have a better job, make more money, perhaps start a family, and pay less taxes on that first $8000.

Practically you start paying Social Security as soon as you start working.

As for federal income taxes, due to the current tax breaks most of the bottom half of household income earners pay no taxes, and about 80% of the bottom half make money off the federal income tax system. You can look up household income on Wikipedia, but roughly half of US households make $50,000 or less. Some of the tax data here came from http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Nearly-half-of-US-households-apf-1105567323.html?x=0&.v=1

Is it 0bammer's multi-billion high speed rail that will hurt the poor if it is cut? Or perhaps billions spent in medicare and medicaid for illegals? High speed rail will help the middle class, as it will provide jobs bulding it, and it will decrease commuting times.

Oil production is at its highest level since 2003...the small amount that we can drill will have no effect on the middle class.
