Many of us independents are dissatisfied because the President did not do enough to reform things. We wanted a public option as a guarantee that healthcare companies would have meaningful competition that would force them to bring down healthcare costs. We wanted serious financial reform. Far more than was delivered. We wanted both Bush wars ended immediately. And we want campaign finance reform so that we completely remove lobbyists and special-interest contributions from corrupting every single one of our politicians. And that can only be accomplished with 100% public funding of political campaigns.

But even though all these things have not happened yet, I'm still going to vote for the President and the Democrats. The very last thing I would ever do is to vote for the Republicans who put our country into a massive crater with their ridiculous spending, doubling the national debt in just 8 years, and who now are moving at warp speed off the ultraright end of the political spectrum.

I made some changes: "Many of us independents are dissatisfied because the President did not do enough to reform things. We wanted a public option as a guarantee that healthcare companies would have meaningful competition that would force them to bring down healthcare costs. We wanted serious financial reform. Far more than was delivered. We wanted both Bush wars [won] immediately. And we want campaign finance reform so that we completely remove lobbyists and special-interest contributions from corrupting every single one of our politicians. And that can only be accomplished with 100% public funding of political campaigns." Now I agree completely. And I don't know about us_1776, but I am a former Dem turned independent, and I won't be voting either Dem or Rep, 'cause I've had enough of both. Also, unlike Obama, I *am* a bona fide centrist.

larry0304, it's all about the almighty dollar and the fact that you have to be wealthy to get your foot in the door. That has to change before anything else can.

This independent would say nothing happened. I didn't vote for him in the first place, as I didn't feel he was at all genuine, and the performance up to now, is exactly or worse, than expected.

I didn't vote for McCain either, although I consider him one of the better people in Congress.

I wrote in my own candidate, as there were none on the ballot, worth voting for. That is what a true independent does......no matter how many people consider that a "wasted" vote. Independents are not cattle......we don't care what others think.......we vote our convictions.

For this independent, Obama was NOT an option.......ever.

As an independent I did vote for Obama, but he and the democratic and republican congressional leaders have and continue to fail the American taxpayers time and time again. This year I will write-in candidates if the mainstream parties don't have viable candidates themselves.

And I agree with you that this will not be a wasted vote as it won't be a vote for a lesser of two evils!

I am a former Democrat -- now an independent -- and a Hilliary supporter, though I did place my hopes in Obama after he beat her in the primaries. Now I can't bring myself to vote either Democrat or Republican.

The problem is this: George Bush took 8 years to ruin this country. The mortgage mess, the downturn in jobs, bank failures, bank bailouts, etc. all started on his watch. Now Obama is elected and most of you think that he can be elected one day and turn the country around the next. I'm afraid that it doesn't happen that way.. It will take years to undo the damage done under the last administration. I suppose that if the old man and the air head had been elected we would be "rolling in clover?" I don't think so. One of the reasons the country is still in the mess were are in is due to the Republican Party. Now known as the NO party.

Larry, your quote "You can't defend what Obama has done so you blame Bush and lie in order to bolster your opinion" is one of the best stated comments I seen on this site in a long time. Keep up the good fight.

It is correct that it often takes years to see the effect of government policies. It will take years still to fully understand what the Bush years really did?both positive and negative. The catalyst for this economic crisis is debt based in the real estate/housing lending. The government policies that caused this crisis started in the early Clinton years. The economy is recovering very slowly, partially because of a lack of faith in the government to steer the debt ship. For decades now the US government has proven it does not understand the real costs of paying interest.

The current president has failed so far. Not because he failed to ?solve? the economy (I didn?t expect this in 18 months), but because he failed to enact policies that would steer the ship toward economic recovery. He has chosen to spend his time enacting policies that feed the radical end of his own party rather than pragmatic solutions to the country?s largest problem: economic recovery and reducing government debt.

As an independent, I did not vote for either of the two major candidates. However, I was (still am) willing to give the President my support if he figures out how to solve the major problems of this country.

This is inaccurate. The meltdown is because Democrats under Clinton decreed that everyone should own a home - even if they had no money to pay for a home. Owning a home is not a constitutional right, but a reward for having worked one's a** off.

This is one of my biggest disagreements with liberals. They have skewed the Bill of Rights from guaranteeing 'pursuit' to the government guaranteeing 'have.' That is simply unsustainable in any country's economy. The government was created to make sure citizens could pursue their goals in an unfettered environment. It was not created to deliver those goals to anyone who could not do it on their own. This is what is destroying the middle class.

Any if anyone wants to respond with silly remarks about 'fat cats,' check out the annual incomes of the Democratic senators and representatives. They are some of the wealthiest people in this country and you can bet they have figures out ways where they do not have to pay for the reckless way they are squandering this country's resources.
