We South Carolians have had to watch this disgraceful display not only in our local media but on the national level as well. The legislature censured him, but otherwise let him get away with it. There was statewide clamor among voters for him to resign, but he refused. He is a lame duck, so we'll be getting rid of him soon. His marriage and his political career are finished. The only thing I can say at this point is: Please don't allow this guy to resurrect his career later elsewhere! He's done in South Carolina, but it wouldn't be unusual for the Republican party to use him later (for example Gingrich) as some sort of poster boy. Believe me - this guy's arrogance and hypocrisy know no bounds!

Jenny is a classy lady. She held her head high during this crap but who knows how many tears she shed behind closed doors. But she is seeing a good man now, he puts Mark to shame. Mark is dirt, he is lower than dirt. I hope he and Maria are happy at the mess they made especially in the lives of the children; they so deserve each other.

The media has made a mockery out of this situation but I think once the jerk is out of office, it'll all die down.

Agreed! Problems typical of marriage do not get solved by stepping out of the marriage. They are solved by engaging the spouse and looking for compromises on issues. So many find it easier in anger to call it quits. A marriage is a commitment for life and it is mstly men that do not try hard enough. Marital Apathy and testosterone = marriage-ending ingredients. Sanford is the loser - before and after Jenny divorced him.

It takes two to Tango. I think Sanford's Mistress knew he was Married...

Quite possibly she knew. Two wrongs never add up to a right.

Amen! You took the words out of my mouth-Jenny rose above it all and exhibited true class and maturity, putting the needs of her children and herself first, unlike her ex who put his needs in the Mistress. I wish Jenny much love and hapiness in the future.

Since they are divorced, both Sanfords can and should begin new lives. That said, however, Governor Sanford is crazy to not wait until he is out of office next January to rekindle his relationship with the mistress that broke up his marriage. Why is he doing this to his four sons? Why, on Mother's Day, was he with Maria Chapur and not devoting some time to his elderly mother? I once thought he would make a good president but how he proved me wrong. Governor Sanford continues to embarrass his four sons, the sons he claims to love above all. His actions do not show that. If he ends up with this woman I hope Jenny is able to keep the boys away from that careless affair. Neither the governor nor the mistress put anything first but themselves. Their morals and conduct is not what children should be around.

When a man does not get what he deserves at home , he has a right for a change too. We are not shackled by rules, regulations, Church doctrine and forced servitude to a spouse, be it female or male, when the contract to bring happiness is broken. There is no law that says that misery every day is the tonic to goodness. This MAN should be applauded , if there ever was a LOVE STORY to trump the Bridges of MAdison County, this is it. He RISKED everything for happiness. What the heck is wrong with that ??
A man deserves happiness and change .

Since we do not know all sides of the story one could also speculate that he already had happiness and chose to ignore it; letting testosterone drive his decisions rather than rational thought. Anyway, I was taught that the Applachian Trail was surrounded by trees - not pubic hair.

Everyone deserves happiness, including the spouse of the cheating person. What ever happened to splitting up because you are unhappy and THEN finding someone new??? There's a way to do it and Sanford's way was the wrong way!
RamonaBracker replies:

You sound like someone who has cheated. As the former spouse of a cheater I can tell you that you are sadly mistaken. My former husband was a police officer. We were very much in love and had a good life together. But the power he had as a police officer made it easy for him to forget what he had at home. Women were coming onto him daily. We have been divorced 20 years now and there isn't a week that goes by that he doesn't call and tell me how stupid he was to let me go and to beg for my forgiveness. Sanford couldn't honor the commitment to his wife, what makes you think that he honored his commitment to his constituancy? You talk about a contract to bring happiness. I don't know what was said in your marriage ceremony but mine had these terms; for better or worse, in sickness and in health, FORSAKING ALL OTHERS, for as long as we BOTH SHALL LIVE. Nothing about a reequirement to "BRING HAPPINESS". I may sound bitter but I'm not really. I find it amusing that my ex still needs my forgiveness for something that happened so long ago. IF him and his mistress were really soul mates, he would have come clean to his wife a long time ago and to the voters of SC. Its not that he cheated, its that he doesn't seem to understand how getting his rocks off with someone other than his wife brings into question his entire character.

Are you serious? What Mark Sanford did to his wife and family is pathetic.

What is wrong is that he hurt his four sons in the process. He chose to run for public office and people supported him and believed in him. He should have told Jenny that he wanted out of their marriage, gotten a divorce and THEN PURSUED THE OTHER WOMAN. He does not have the right to carelessly pull the rug out from all his family believed to be true. AN honorable man would have handled it differently and still had the support and respect he worked to obtain. No one said he didn't deserve happiness and if that meant change, fine. There was a kinder way to handle the whole situation.

Humph. Not sure which is more hypocritical: the fact that a conservative broke his marriage vows, or that the "do whatever you want as long as it feels good" crowd is giving him hell over it. You're right, he's not a conversative. He's a closet liberal. He's all yours.

The point is that he loudly trumpeted his "family values" cred, while secretly doing the exact opposite. It's not the deed, it's the hypocrisy.

Is the hypocrisy that the shrill liberals are so wild-eyed about the same sort of hypocrisy we're seeing with "no earmarks", "transparency", "negotiations will be broadcast on cspan" type of loud trumpeting we heard from Obama?
