Declan McCullagh: Golden State, In Danger Of Economic Collapse, Turns To Federal Government For Help
- Whoever quoted Margaret Thatcher should know that she was a Reaganomics (ie trickle-down) anti-union right winger who cause financial ruin to Great Britain just like Reagan did here. Anti-government, pro-big business, anti-worker and consume by borrowing money do not work.
We all can see now that the privatization scheme is a failed conspiracy to steal from the workers and the taxpayers. - Reply to this comment
- I would not call Schwarzennegger a DINO, he was at both the 2004 and 2008 RNCs supporting their extremist candidates. And you are also incorrect, CA has a two thirds majority requirement so that an extremist majority of CONS controls the process. It is really sad that the Dems had to compromise with the know nothing, do nothing Republicans.
CA needs to change the 2/3 requirement ASAP and they won't do it with a Republicon clown as governor. Where are the recall people now? - Reply to this comment
- CA won't fail. It may have to take drastic action. The Democrats who control the legislature and their (RINO) Governor may have to raise taxes without putting it to a vote of the people and/or they may have to cut all those cushy unionized government and teach union jobs, salaries, and benefit, but it won't fail. They shouldn't get one penny of Federal tax money. There is no reason the residents of Kansas and Mississippi should pay to bail out the richest state in the country. The residents of CA, and the elected leaders they freely chose over and over again have voted themselves a the higest tax rate in the nation and a free lunch over and over again. They need to learn that high taxes don't bring prosperity and there is no such thing as a free lunch. What ought to terrify everybody is that Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are following the same corrupt path that CA has been down. The only difference is they can print money. Wait until the American People see the Billion Dollar Obama bill they will need to buy a cup of coffee in a few years.

- Let's not call it taxes, let's call it user fees for the rich. Extra fees for more than 2 cars, 2 homes and yachts for example. User fees for excess income to help pay for the society that gave them the riches.
If the CONS party had not given tax breaks to the rich and stopped funding the bombing of 4 countries, there would be no problem. SO all of a sudden the brain dead borrow and spend Republicons are waking up?

- This is really ridiculous. If California asks for bail out money, what it is really asking for is that Non Californian citizens be asked to pay for services that they don't not receive and Californians refuse to pay for but do receive. Why should non Californians pay for services that Californians themselves do not feel are worth the money? Since California put forward a plan to reduce the deficit and Obama blackmailed them to not adopt it because it cut union members salaries what is truly being requested of Non Californians is that we pay for California union members who provide no services to us. This is crazy and I think even the most die hard liberal would have to agree. We are basically being force to fund Obama's re-election effort. Wake up America before it is too late. "The problem with Socialism is you eventually run out of the other guy's money." ---Margaret Thatcher

- Don't forget it was the Bush Crime Family and his failed Government of Pigs Party that gave the banks trillions. Some trickle down we are seeing.

- sem042004 you were the one who brought up welfare and overspending both expertly perfected by Bush and his moronic, arrogant supporters like Schwarzenneger in CA.
Yes and Reagans' trickle-down theory and the start of monopolization and de-regulation of big business (a la Friedman and Norquist, you know, make Gov't so small that we can drown it in a bathtub) has been PROVEN TO BE A FAILURE. YES I am blaming the CONS party for embracing the failed corporations and their ruining of our finances.
Boy, you denialist just don't pay attention at all, do you. Maybe you are listening to the News for Dumb Fox or something, that is what it reads like. The mythical nightmare of Reaganomics playing out in Cali forneea. And who in God's name would want to live in TX anyway? - Reply to this comment

- " Nothing has been learned from their folly" When did any politician ever learn anything from history? There is only one rule in politics, no matter what the party, "Get (re) elected." Every decision they make has to pass that test. "Will this he;p my election?" Nothing else matters, not common sense, not "service to the country", not their good of their constituents, nothing but getting elected. Is it any wonder they are all such scum?
They only thing that will solve this is a one-term limit for all elected positions and then the person is barred from holding any elected or appointed position for life. - Reply to this comment
- < Of course the current system of Republicon overspending, corporate welfare, lack of regulation and killing of unions has been such a great success for the people of CA and the US. >
Funny given that Obama just signed the largest corporate welfare bill in the history of the United Stats, and plans on asking for more . . . . It's just the corporations HE is supporting don't actually PRODUCE anything. - Reply to this comment

- The American Reinvestment Act signed by Obama might actually help homeowners and small business owners before the Depression takes us all out. Unlike the bank welfare given by Bushoccio the war criminal that gives the war profiteers even more money for bonuses. And where were all the "good Germans" when the Bush Crime Family was starting wars and giving a trillion dollar tax break to the already filthy rich?
- < Have you ever been to Texas? Surplus. Big surprise. Tax cuts, bigger surprise. Businesses relocating here another surprise. Millionaires moving here - yet another surprise. This should only be a surprise to the foolish. >
CBS needs a way to recommend comments, you took the words right out of my mouth.
Why the hell should working Texans, which is most of us, or at least more than the national average, spend their tax dollars from their PRODUCTIVE work (not make work, or government jobs, or workfare) to support a state with failed immigration policies, failed social welfare policies, and that in our opinion has already infringed so far on the 1st and 2nd Amendment to be irredeemable as far as the others are concerned?
You THINK California has freedom of speech?? Publicly advocate conservative values in much of California and you make yourself a social pariah. Look what happened to Miss California when when she gave an honest, but conservative OPINION on the Abortion issue? she was pilloried in the press, and demands for her resignation came from every left wing Hollywood "star" who had a microphone handy. Guess her speech wasn't free was it as it is the general opinion that those few seconds of sound cost her the Miss America title. Ironic as MOST Americans hold opinions remarkably similar to hers, even if most Hollywood moguls don't. - Reply to this comment
- To Noloyalisti: LOL - Yeah the current ecomomic problems were completely created by the Republicans - Guess the democrats were all on vacation for the last few years and had no hand in anything. Brilliant observation !
As for your denying th ereal history of Reaganomics - Tell it to the BARTENDER not to me.
Now have a groovy day ! - Reply to this comment

California is broke because of overspending by Democrats and Republicans. They are broke because of their sense of entitlement which they extend to everyone - even non-citizens. They are broke because they failed to educate their children, but succeeded in indoctrinating them. They are broke because they overtax their citizens and businesses leading to brain drain and loss of tax base. They are broke because of ignorant fools who fail to see they are running out of productive resources to exploit. Blame your problems of Reagan (40 years ago) if you wish, but the problem is YOU and citizens like you, who fail to understand that government is the problem. - Reply to this comment

- You are so totally whacked out that you live in your own little world. You make up all the stories that you and other like you want to believe and ignore the facts and good analysis by the experts. Go back to telling lies to others like you that want to belive them. You are part of a cult of self deception that will never recover from your illness.
- Ray Gun was for corporate (read greed driven) controlled government. He is certainly one of the main reasons that America became a fascist (right wing extremist) country. His economic policies pushed by Freidman and Norquist have been proven again and again in this and other countries to be a complete disaster (unless you like corporate welfare).
Tickle-down, de-regulation and tax cuts for the rich have sunk CA as well as America (except for the big corporations who run everything). - Reply to this comment
- Reaganomics was a complete DISASTER. He got rid of regulations that directly led to the failed "free" trade agreements. His anti-tax policies helped give credibility to the disastrous Prop 13 that turned public education in CA from first to worst. He then lied and agreed to a huge tax increase (not for the rich of course). He raised the fed deficit by the largest amount of any President in history.
Reagan was a complete failure and a disaster and almost everything you think about him is a myth. - Reply to this comment

- What a hack. Weren't the Dems overspending right with the GOP ? or were they on an extended vacation ? Corporate welfare ? How about public welfare - over 7 trillion dollars spent since the war on poverty, and there's still poverty. That's enough for man woman, child and illegal in teh U.S. to be a multimillionaire. Lack of regulation ? Bush & the GOP fought to have regulation of Fanny & Freddie, and others but were resisted by the Dems - video of this is all over YouTube. Unions have hardly been killed off - but are definitely killed the ability of America to be competitive. Look at cost to produce an American union vehicle vs non-union. No wonder US auto industry is failing.
Now go have a non-hack/check the facts day.

- To Freddyfrogag: Who's the moron ? Do you seriously think that illegals have no financial impact on CA ? Facts: More than half a million aliens are caught each year trying to enter California's southern border illegally. Estimates put illegal alien state residents at 3 million, a population that may cost the state's taxpayers more than $13 billion per year for services. Hospitals are closing down. There's a disproportionate number of illegals in the prison system compared to other groups. Plus impacts from disease. Open your eyes - this info is readily available.
To Noloyalist: nothing makes me smile more than a lib showing their ignorance. How about facts: reagonomics worked big time ! Even with the Reagan defense buildup, which helped win the Cold War, total federal spending declined to 21.2% of GDP in 1989 from 23.5% of GDP in 1983. That's a real reduction of 10% in the size of government relative to the economy. His anti-inflation monetary policy, was spectacularly successful. Inflation was cut in half to 6.2% in 1982 from 13.2% in 1980, and cut in half again to 3.2% in 1983. We know such policies work because they turned around in just two years an economy far worse than today's
Now go attempt to have an intelligent day ! - Reply to this comment
- California is a microcosm for the nation. Obama is following the same pattern of spending, unionization, social welfare, environmental regulation and taxation as California. The results will be the same. Nothing has been learned from their folly.

- No state has seen the growth of population segments that contribute so little while expecting so much. If anything, California is a perfect example of how entitlement programs cannot benefit everybody if only a few are financing them.
- "contribute so little while expecting so much..."
California has the 6th largest economy in the world. It has to do a lot to be in that position. California contributes more to the Federal government than it receives, so I do not know what you mean by expect so much. That is just more of Reagan waste, fraud and abuse welfare cheat lies. Reagan brought in more waste, fraud and abuse to the Pentagon contracts than anyone else.
- Californian's have high tax rates today because they insisted on having low tax rates in the past, but in retaining the same level of government services. Someone has to pay the debt and the interest on the debt, so today's Californians get stuck with the bill.
Ever notice how not a single gov't entity runs a surplus. Imagine if you moved to a state that had a surplus. They might say 'We're going to lower your taxes but keep up the services because we can just pull it out of our rainy day fund. Thank the generosity of your parents.'
Wishful thinking. - Reply to this comment
- Let California go bankrupt. It will free the state from many bad contracts that suck up tax revenues without being beneficial to the California residences. California will be free to discharge their governing body that got them into this mess and reorganize. And if they are smart, this state will be broken into 2 or 3 smaller states.
North California, South California and the District of Hollywood. - Reply to this comment
- California needs to trash its initiative system, which is responsible for most of this mess: people repeatedly vote to increase spending and for tax cuts = budget deficits.
California's public needs to realize that they have a representative government, and they should trust the people they elect to actually GOVERN or they should turn out in force on election day to election people they DO trust. That's how its supposed to work and actually DOES work in other states.
Finally, California needs a balanced budget amendment like other states. Just balance the FRIGGIN' budget, already. Quit putting it off (and you know they will) for future generations to pay. Its populist, but morally bankrupt. - Reply to this comment
