I am a simple East Coaster. I am sad for the hard working people of California that are watching their state fall apart. What is most sad is that the Federal Government is following the exact path of California. Catering to unions (don't you folks realize yet that unions don't give one damn about employees), environmental causes to the extreme (I love this planet, but I love people more), and pampering and provision for illegal aliens are what have (yes have, not will) destroyed California. I really don't see how the majority of posters on this site can blame the right for this issue.

Why do the posters on this site feel that they are expected to get back every penny of their federal tax expenditures? I don't know any WORKING American who breaks even on Fed taxes.

People, there is no free lunch and all feel good actions have repercussions. I only hope that the rest of the nation can learn from California's mistakes in spite of Comrade Obama.

I would welcome any true working person to my home state of North Carolina in the event you are ready to leave CA.

What a hack. Weren't the Dems overspending right with the GOP ? or were they on an extended vacation ? Corporate welfare ? How about public welfare - over 7 trillion dollars spent since the war on poverty, and there's still poverty. That's enough for man woman, child and illegal in teh U.S. to be a multimillionaire. Lack of regulation ? Bush & the GOP fought to have regulation of Fanny & Freddie, and others but were resisted by the Dems - video of this is all over YouTube. Unions have hardly been killed off - but are definitely killed the ability of America to be competitive. Look at cost to produce an American union vehicle vs non-union. No wonder US auto industry is failing.

Now go have a non-hack/check the facts day.

The problem is one of entitlement. Democracies fail this way. We have the unions who think they are entitled to jobs and high pay even if there is no money to pay them(see CA and GM) There is the new majority of USA citizens who think they are entitled to super duper health care which costs more in their lifetime than they ever payed in taxes for it. The majority thinks it can vote themselves the economic equivalent of a car which runs 1000 miles on the energy it gets from being left out at night and absorbing moonshine. And our feckless shortsided weak and intrinsically corrupt 'representatives' cater to this nonsense because a generation of ill-education has succeeded in graduating enough morons who actually believe it !

PS, when it falls apart the people turn to a dictator to keep order, since they have failed to govern themselves with any sense.

Let's not call it taxes, let's call it user fees for the rich. Extra fees for more than 2 cars, 2 homes and yachts for example. User fees for excess income to help pay for the society that gave them the riches.

If the CONS party had not given tax breaks to the rich and stopped funding the bombing of 4 countries, there would be no problem. SO all of a sudden the brain dead borrow and spend Republicons are waking up?

The American Reinvestment Act signed by Obama might actually help homeowners and small business owners before the Depression takes us all out. Unlike the bank welfare given by Bushoccio the war criminal that gives the war profiteers even more money for bonuses. And where were all the "good Germans" when the Bush Crime Family was starting wars and giving a trillion dollar tax break to the already filthy rich?

No, you should pay for services received. Also services are designed for the benefit of the entire society, not just those who pay or not. For example parks benefit the lives of all, whether you use them or not. Public schools benefit society, whether you have kids or not. That is how universal, single payer health care will work when we finally get it. For the benefit of all who need it and the healthy people will help pay for it until they need it, etc., etc. , etc.

Remember that Schwarzenegger was a big supporter of the Republican Bushoccio Crime Family and then wanted more of the failed McSame. The CONS fiscal mentality is that of a child. A petulant, misguided and un-educated child. Exactly the mentality of the disaster that was Reagan. At least he is only the 2nd worst president of all time now.

We would not have a problem is the Bush supporting Arnie was not appointed by big corporations to give them welfare. Government is not the problem, out current government run for the profit of the rich and big corporations is the problem. How many times do the wasteful, greedy big corporation have to screw everyone before the idiot wake up. The Republi CON party is a joke and a failure. Don't try to give equal blame, you should blame the subservient, complacent and complicit good Germans of CA for putting up with this junk.

When it comes to money, there is only one truth. Spending money you don't have is stupid.

Our nation, our states, and we ourselves have been sold on living on credit for years. Now we are seeing that wasn't so smart after all. California will simply have to stop spending on anything but essentials, just as any individual would. It will be painful, but taxpayers have voted numerous times against new taxes. It is time for the state to act as if the peoples' votes count for something. Stop all unnecessary spending.

CA needs to be allowed to fail. Why doesn't anyone bring up the whole Enron affair, that was the catalyst that brought them down. Arnold, junk bond fraudster Malkin,& Bush's energy adviser basiacally shut Gary Davis down when he wanted to go after Enron for the 9 billion they had stolen from CA. They villified Davis and Arnold took over. Schwarzenegger was complicit in this fraud yet the people of CA support him. They deserve wheatever they get.
