Declan McCullagh Says A Better Solution Is To Let The Automakers Declare Bankruptcy

Thank you for your point ''''''''no free lunch''''''''. Why Cut Taxes from a Bankrupted Government? Any Tax Cut only increases the Debt and never cuts the spending or service. Even if our Government does cut spending and/or service, it a good sign that we are a 3rd World nation.
By Sacrifice I mean: "Please create a Special Federal Tax high enough to pay down and eliminate only this monster $11 Trillion Debt"

Taxes are a very complicated subject made worse by emotion. Our country has chosen to base taxes primarily on income in a graduated fashion so that increased income creates multiply increased tax revenue. So, I choose to raise income such that taxes go up even faster. I wouldnt feel this way if we had a different tax structure.
But, your solution (raise em high and raise em now) will not solve our problem without government restraint that is clearly lacking (they even raid Social Security funds). Worse, foreign investors will withdraw funds from our country and leave us even more dependent on borrowed money.
The only solution I see to clearing debt is to earn more money and spend less. - Reply to this comment

To avoid the loss of productivity you can either (generalizing here)
1. Encourage innovation ie capitalism. Some people lose out but as a whole the population can be relatively free.
2. Enforce the "from each according to their ability" to force productivity and at that point you are communist and any sense of freedom is gone.
My Answers:
===========
1) Look all around you, all Innovations eventually ends up produced in a foreign nation.
2) Why should I care about my ''freedom'' if I live like a King such as in China? My ''freedom'' becomes an issue when I do not live like a King and I wish to do something about it.
In Communism, the Dictator is responsible for the Welfare of it citizens.
In Democracy, WE THE PEOPLE are responsible for our own Welfare.
Given our situation today, WE THE PEOPLE are IRRESPONSIBLE! - Reply to this comment

There were many highly respected world leaders that advised Republican President Bush of other more effective options than invading Iraq. Even the Prince of Saudi Arabia came straight to the White House to change Bush''''s Decision.
I leave you wondering why Bush selected the Invasion option.

I am not sure what those "world leaders" are that you refer to. When the war in IRAQ began we had Spain, UK, Korea and Australia in agreement, actually encouraging us. I dont put a lot of stock in advice from the Prince of Saudi at that time, he had other motives.
But I also dont discount that our own leaders were frustrated with being confronted again by IRAQ in such a short time (Desert Storm was not ten years old). Its easy and cheap to say Bush II was revenging Bush I and doesnt address the facts at all. Bush I chose to not go into Bagdad and many chastised him for it. Especially when terrorists attacked us during the Clinton years.
Also, it is clear that al qaeda operatives ran to IRAQ when we beat them in Afganistan. - Reply to this comment

Let me share one reason for our Idiot mind.
Today, both parents work hard to beat the neighbors. (the jones got a new car, we should get one but my spouse must work too)
When both parents get home, they are both Tired if not Stressed out. To eliminate the Stress, the parents watch some Entertainment on TV. the Welface of the childrens at home is priority number 2 if not last.
The competition inherent within Capitalism forces us to live a life for others and not for our family.
On a separate note:
Communism is getting Extremely Rich. See China and Vietnam.
Socialism is getting very Rich. See Latin America, Europe, Asia and Canada.
Democracy is getting very Poor. See USA.
I careless about the system around me if I am getting wealthy and live like a King. - Reply to this comment

I am sacrificing and they know it. I have taught them to question things until they KNOW the answer, not just an opinion they like. My question is why do WE continue to vote for governments who spend us into debt? Why do we expect a government to fix things when we see their historical track record?
This aint gonna change until we return to the principles of hard work and fair play, there is no "free lunch". - Reply to this comment

Here is a workable plan with common sense for the U.S. Auto Industry -
http://pacificgatepost.blogspot.com/2008/11/solution-for-detroit-gm-friends.html
You can deal with the "Jobs Bank" program by legislating an end to all contracts that have stifled the companies from achieving profitability.
Do not leave it to Paulson or Congress to come up with a creative plan or consider taxpayers'' interests.
There is much creative talent hidden inside the U.S. Big 3 that has been smothered by mismanagement and the UAW. - Reply to this comment

- As a similarity the Iraq war in my opinion was a mistake unless there are underlying reasons it had to be done that we dont know about. The one good side is we retrained soldiers on the ground along with new technology and experience being something other than strictly policemen like in Serbia and Somalia.

I think hindsight shows the IRAQ war was a mistake but we are in it now and we need to make the best of it we can. Finish our job in a respectable manner.
But, I dont think there was any American subterfuge that got us into IRAQ (lets not further divide our once great nation with more finger pointing). I think that Sadam Hussein had an administration that ran on fear of each other. His leaders were lying to him that they had weapons of mass destruction. So, when our espionage found legitimate IRAQ papers claiming these weapons we believed them. In fact, they were lies being told to Sadam by his own people. Our mistake today is that we let these lie poison our trust in each other. Divided we fail. - Reply to this comment

- Trade barriers may be necessary in the short term. But, in the long term, our success will depend on our willingness to work together, trust each other, and be the UNITED states of America.
Posted by Machineguy at 06:11 PM : Nov 12, 2008
Trade barriers are necessary until every other nation who trades with us 1) abide by a set of common labor laws; the American worker should not have to compete against countries running sweatshops, and 2) do not in any way subsidize their industries or manipulate their currency; better yet, use a common currency.
The Europeans got together and formed the E.U. to resolve the above issues. Frankly I don''t see the U.S. doing anything similar. - Reply to this comment

After WWII, America had a WORLD ECONOMIC MONOPOLY because the Economies of all other nations were Ruined and Destroyed.
Consequently, other nations could only BUY from ''Made in USA'' at our High Asking Monopoly Price. Therefore, our standard of living went thru the Roof.
Today, America got NO WORLD ECONOMIC MONOPOLY on any products or services. We must learn to compete head on with all other nations. So, our standard of living dives.
What good is it to invest in research when all the Development from that Research is OutSourced.
Today, a professional degree is worthless. In fact, Congress is right now considering raising the Quota on the H1B Visa program for more InSourcing of foreign Professional Workers. Hence, driving down further our salaries in the Middle Class and Saturating the Professional Market.
Why get a Professional Education?
The best jobs are in Construction because you must be physically here to perform the job and let get those Foreign Professional H1B Workers work hard to pay you. - Reply to this comment
