There is no current human endeavor that is more important than space exploration. Trying to explain that to Americans, of course, who idolize the tobacco-chewing, beer-guzzling, belly-scratching, truck-driving Common Man mentality is usually futile. And it isn't a matter of mere "inspiration," either. But never mind. If it won't get them laid and they can't pick their noses with it, they don't care about it. That's why the "elitists" need to just run the show, and not pay too much attention to the dolts.

I CAN'T STAND it when people whine about the Space Program being "a waste of money".

Actually, it's the only great thing humans have done in the past fifty years. And the money isn't spent in space. They don't fly truckloads of cash up there and release them. It's spent all in the USA creating thousands of jobs.

You want to whine about wasted money? Why does the USA spend more on the military industrial complex than the next ten countries COMBINED? For more aircraft carriers to steam around in circles in the ocean or another country like Iraq to be invaded (for no reason)?

Nasa's only a small percentage of the GDP, folks. And it gives our kids (or did when I was young) something to inspire them besides rock stars and Xbox. If the space program was entirely cancelled, it wouldn't feed the hungry, fix all the roads or even fix the health care system.

People should be able to check
a box on their income tax return-them that wants space exploration can pay a higher rate of taxes, maybe a couple more thousand of YOUR real dollars-folks like me who whine about it being a waste of MY money-pay less.
Everybody would be happy-except NASA-because the cheap big mouths would check a big NO-they only spend other people's money.
Right or wrong?

johninpennsyl,
I feel the same way about some of my tax money going to education. I don't have children, so why can't I check a box so I don't have to have tax dollars going to schools that I have no interest in. In fact, there are a lot of things I don't support that are funded by my taxes. We should be able to choose where our tax money is spent individually, not through some silly elected official that the majority put in office for that very purpose. Of course to keep it all straight, the IRS would have to be so big that it would be getting most of our tax money.

"Fixing" the planet would require hundreds of trillions of dollars. If we cut Nasa's budget, that won't put a dent in any "problems".

Looks like we're never going anywhere if you have your say.
