CNET: Despite Citizens' Complaints About The Bailout, The Big Three Build Really Good Cars And We Buy A Lot Of Them
- Brian, Great article, people can have all the facts and they still make up lies and untruths. Remember when the Taurus was the best-selling car in the United States between 1992 and 1996. I guess they just drove themselves, and invisible people drove them or the best one Not true, LIES made up figures!!! And who has had the #1 selling truck for 26yrs(hint not toyota)= Ford, then Gm. Most just do it to defend there poor purchase of a import.

- God what a bunch of crybabys, my tranmission craped out at 100k, my front end went out at 88k, even though I never did a tranmission service and drive 60mph down dirt roads."sniffle-sniffle" My domelight burnt out @ 100k, junk domestics. How about all the blown engines Toyotas had,(www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/01/toyota_sludge_settlement.html) and all the failed transmissions Honda has had.(consumeraffairs.com/automotive/honda_transmission.html ) How long should they have to be liable for these products? And obviously most of the poster have not been in anything new since 1980.
And dont dare say the imports where better then, with shock towere blowing thru after one Michigan winter, the vinyl covered cardboard door panels,,,and bumpers falling off and exhaust systems falling off.
Ever notice at The Dream Cruise or Car show you dont see any older imports. Thats because they sucked and most rusted away. I still see a bunch of older Domestics driving around Michigan.

- I only buy GM. Ive had no troubles. I either have good luck or they are great cars. I''d put the new G8 against ANY Accord or Camry in ANY category. The foreign cars are over-hyped and plain.

- Three of the American cars I''ve owned have about put me in the poorhouse with repairs due to design flaws. No statement, research or study can convince me that American cars aren''t ***. I''ve always ''bought American'' because I am an American but my faith is at the zero level.

- lyfizgood, if you read past the first sentence of your geo metro article, you''''ll find that it''''s built from parts made outside the united states, by people outside the united states, using a foreign built engine, and you still want to call it american. Yeah right...
Regarding the prius being a money loser, they still it availabble for sale when the inevitable time came, instead of running to congress crying for a bridge loan.
As for Big three hybrids, it takes three of their best fuel mileage hybrids to equal the mileage of one prius. I drive a VW zero emissions diesel jetta at 55 miles/gallon. Honda and Toyota have similar diesel technology for sale at the end of year. Come back to this blog when you can find a single similar offering in the US from GM, ford, or crysler, at least anything reliable or worth buying (google GM diesel car horrors for amusement)

Excuse me n1djs, but that article on the Geo and comment came from someone else, in response to some questions I posted about GM taking the Metro off the market, etc. I personally will not support the US makers until they start being competitive with the foriegn makers here in the US. As I have stated before, I am sick and tired of being bled dry by US auto makers and the oil industry with which they appear to be in partnership to keep us oil dependant. - Reply to this comment
- what ive noticed is that especially from early to mid nineties american cars, especially front wheel drives, are universally low quality in the TRANSMISSIONS, a very expensive part.
I have lost so many transmissions, and I know so many who have..
Also, the interiors are VERY cheap, plastic fasteners and glued on parts that crack and break, bad door locks and windows, on and on ad nauseum..
I do like F150''s though, and the chevy caprice is bulletproof mechanically, but again, INTERIORS are terrible terrible - Reply to this comment
- The facts show that american cars are at least equivilant to foreign cars in quality. People seem to be stuck in a paradigm left over from the 70''s and early 80''s when american cars were junk.

- I''ll put a Ford truck up against ANY Foreign Made Truck. I have 2 F-250''s and an F-150, and have taken them through Hellatious Snows and back roads in the Wyoming Wilderness, where you could die if your truck quit on you. They''re Tough as Tanks and I wouldn''t trust my life with a Toyota or Nissan.

- Wrong. If you ever test drive an american vehicle and compare it to a Japanese vehicle, the difference is obvious. With the exception of high end vehicles, American cars are just junk. The handling is awful, the fuel economy sucks, everything is cheap and crappy.
A look under the hood tells the tale: Japanese cars are made with better design, better metallurgy, better electronics, and better interiors. I''''ve worked on my own cars now for decades, and I''''ve worked on/seen the gamut. Since the late 70''''s, American cars have SUCKED. The only American vehicle worth owning now is a Dodge Ram 2500 or a Ford F250. Everything else is cheap, poorly designed garbage.

I travel a lot for my work so I drive a lot of rentals. The differences in the way american and foreign cars drive and feel is at the most minimul but generally not noticeable. Theonly real differences are in the trim level. - Reply to this comment

What the devil ever possessed you to buy a DOdge Colt? My gawd those things are ugly, awful pieces of garbage!
Yes, Mitsubishi and Nissan are the black sheep of the Japanese bunch. Hyundais are better made than most Mitsubishis! - Reply to this comment
