I was of the "should NEVER be used" school until I read your comparison of it to our male acquaintances calling us "sweetie", "honey", or "babe". They remind me of an old human-subject experiment (true story). Subjects were given glasses to wear all day and night. The glasses inverted the world- made it upside down. After 3 days every subject suddenly started seeing the world as if it were right-side up again! The inage reaching their eyes was still upside down, but they could not see it.
The people like ol'''' witless here are wearing upside down glasses and think the world they see a world that is actually right-side up.
