"all of central and south america and the spanish speaking caribbean are considered hispanics,,,

Posted by terrorislami at 01:43 PM : Jun 16, 2008"

Correct, because they were all Spanish or Portuguese colonies or territories from the early 1600''s onwards.

You have to include Brazil in there too as a Hispanic country even though they do not speak Spanish.

"The majority of the residents in central and south america cant claim european descent, yet the speak spanish. They are still "hispanic" even if they are of Aztec descent.

Posted by trracymorgan at 01:38 PM : Jun 16, 2008"

Partly correct, those peoples who are of Aztec descent are also of Spanish or Portuguese descent. The fact that they speak Spanish does not make them Hispanic, it is the fact that some of their ancestors were from Iberia.

Your first contention is not correct, Spain and Portugal are part of Europe so anyone who is any part Spanish or Portuguese is in fact partly of European descent.

Tracy, the majority do have some spanish background. The ones that don''t can''t say their hispanic because they speak spanish. I am a complete and total gringo, I speak spanish and portuguese, and yet I''m not hispanic. Your definition as well as its premise simply wrong.

doctor2012: I find the best thing to do when confronted by an idiot is to ignore them. If you respond to them, it lends credibility to their arguements and enhances their own opinons of worth.

"I dont have the time to educate fools that religion and language arent "genetically" passed on.

Posted by trracymorgan at 01:35 PM : Jun 16, 2008"

No one is saying that and there''s nothing to teach here since that''s about *** obvious a statement as you can make.

Your contention was that the ethnic category "Hispanic" is based on language and that''s simply not correct.
