Bob, we''re on the same wavelength here! Great post again and so very true! What is amazing is that educated Americans buy into the old party rhetoric and talking points and refuse to critically think about our nation''s problems and come up solutions like we used to! - Reply to this comment
- Maybe somebody already pointed this out but if not, make a note that each time the oil barons appear before congress they make their case about additional drilling needed both on-shore and off-shore in the Americas. It''s a big sham to get what they want and that is to ease environmental regulations in the preserves or else they''ll continue to bleed the economy. The Bush admin no doubt has it''s hands all over this one just like EPA strong arm tactics and every other agency that''s not perfectly business friendly.

- There seem to be a lot of self-proclaimed experts citing the cause of spiraling prices as simply a function of free markets reacting to supply and demand. HOGWASH! What%u2019s "free" about a market where supply is primarily controlled, and blatantly manipulated, by the all the major Oil Producing Nations (OPEC)?? That''s collusion! If the world''s oil prices are determined by free world markets, why does gasoline only cost $0.50/gal. in Saudia Arabia? Only $0.28 Iraq? Why $4.00 in the U.S.? Why $8.00 in Europe? Prices are manipulated by nationalistic interventions and tactical corporate manipulations--NOT determined by supply and demand in free markets!

- These speculators are the cause, there is plenty of gas. did you know that it cost more to make regular gas than premium? No kidding my neighbor works for the petroleum Institute here in D.C. He told there is tons of gas and that its speculators doing this. When gas is made it come from a cracking tower and it comes out as a very high octane fule and nneds to be broken down into the various grades and the most expensive is the regular brand. What the heck is going on then why is premium so expensive then?

this is only true in the sense the ''the electorate'' isn''t paying attention (until it really hurts them) ... and many don''t believe that politics and the results of it affect their life.
but there is no real representation for ''we the people'' ... the individual working class citizen is the last on the list for those in the positions of power.
the problems we face are beyond an individuals capacity to really change ... and most people are ''self interested'' ... so something else needs to push them toward other choices. that something is leadership ... and until that changes ... none of these problems will go away.
the moronic finger pointing and partisan blame for everything ensures the masses will remain occupied in their hatred of each other.

ued dollar? WE THE PEOPLE brought it on ourselves. Greed, addicted to feeling good by eating and buying and new toys and etc.
So we have MASSIVE numbers of people getting home loans with no thought to the day when the "creative" financing TERMS AND CONDITIONS (which were read to them out loud at signing) replace the original payments with increased or balloon payments or increased interest, etc.
People getting credit cards to pay off credit cards.
As WE THE PEOPLE go so goes our government. The words need and want have been perverted into the word need ad as Addiction Counselor President Bush plays tough love the withdrawal from the addictions hurt.
The burnout of the economy was predicted on a PBS program in the late 1990''''s.

Agreed. This most definitely a problem for all brought on us by greed. I can say that I have done almost everything financially right, but the housing crisis devalued everything I own and I can''t control that. I''ll suck it up and be fine, but we definitely need to practice fiscal responsibility. Many Americans do not and the President is no better. I don''t know what the answer is, but sadly, a depression/recession might be the wake-up call that people in America need to learn to work hard, save, invest wisely, and so on again! Just a thought. - Reply to this comment
- Everyone is blaming everyone else, but if you follow the money, there is no denying that both OPEC Members and The Oil Companies are profiting BIG TIME! And we know who the OPEC Members and Big Oil players are. However, we don''t seem to know who the BIG Speculators are--and they certainly must be getting filthy rich from the game they are playing. Remember the Energy Traders who joked about ripping off California Grandmothers a few years ago--well, it seems they''re at it again. They''re ripping off the world, and they need to be stopped! Who are those guys???

- Say. How about the devalued dollar...that is more than likely the most significant cause of the rapid rise in oil costs? Oh, and the sarcasm stems from the original Bush declaration that the war in Iraq would pay for itself once we were able to help Iraq produce more oil from their fields. Don''''t see that happening EVER! Too bad for us.

- Now is the time for elected federal, state and local representatives to seriously look at ways to improve urban traffic flow%u2014with a specific intent of promoting fuel efficiencies. There is a potential for MASSIVE nationwide fuel savings merely from the synchronization of traffic lights on major streets, avenues and boulevards across America. Also, do we need %u201CStop Lights%u201D at all the current locations, or will flashing %u201Ccaution%u201D lights suffice in certain locations? Do we really need %u201CStop Signs%u201D on every corner%u2014or, will %u201CYield Signs%u201D be adequate on many less-traveled streets where visibility is clear? There is so much that could be done to save fuel, save time, and reduce driving frustrations.

The problem is that it all goes on the world market. For what you want to benefit us, would require government control. - Reply to this comment
- I say again:
Supply not a problem. All stations open and pumping gas like mad. Drilling for more supply.......... pointless. - Reply to this comment
- I hope gas hits $20 a gallon, then that is when the revolt will happen and any and all oil execs will be the targets.

- Ok, who is worried about this story covering up something far more scarry going on in our government. And before you start, I am not one of these conspiracy theory people, I''m just wondering. Looking back in the past there are some instances of this happening. One thing they put on us to hide something that''s going to bite us in the booty later. I personally can look around every day on my way to work and see thousands of cars, demand is high where I live and I can imagine demand is pretty high every where else too. I have a truck that gets 31 mpg and I am trying to get a car with even better gas mileage. Is trying to buy better cars going to help when we still have sooo many people unwilling to give up their suv''s?

- How about we, the US, start to actually dig for our own oil rather than asking foreign countries for it? I know many of the tree huggers aren''t for it, but Alaska has a lot of untapped resources. Maybe build a new refinery or two since that hasn''t been done in a good many years? Simply upping the output of our current refineries obviously isn''t cutting it.
