Is there any physical device, that can be legally purchased and owned by an American adult, of similar size [2-4 pounds in weight, 8-10" long], that can so readily be carried anywhere, that can inflict so much physical hurt and death to so many human beings in such a short period of time [literally seconds to a few minutes].

You might try a stick of dynamite, you they can be leagally purchased, or you might check with the Israeli%u2019s as to the size of the vests the suicide bombers wear when they walk in unnoticed and kill dozens of them. You probably can leagally buy the ingredients required to make one.

And finally, I do share your deep concern about me needing to be protected from a hostile domestic government, more so now than ever before in my lifetime. I do however think that although both are very remote, and think that a home invasion [where I would need my handgun], would be more likely than a hostile government.

So in closing, I don't want to react to this and have my government [which I do not trust] to inact a law next week, I just want all folks to have an open, honest discussion in search of a better solution. Is what we have now, eg a mental case buying a Glock in 20 minutes the best we can do?

Ah yes, but back to my desire to find a working analogy.

Bombs are neither the size of a handgun, nor are they legal to own. We are talking about an item the size of a book that anyone can buy and carry anywhere, that can obviously kill 20+ people in a matter of minutes.

Again, I think an analogy would help me reach a conclusion.

Yes, treat the mentally ill, but are we not capable at the same time of having a discussion on seeking a better solution, w/out an irrational and emotional solution based on personal bias [note I am a gun owner from previous post]. I am just willing to listen to other points of views and explore possible solutions. I may end up with exactly my current viewpoints, but yes, a horrific incident like this does prompt me to try and see a better status quo.

I hope we Americans find a better solution, where it be better tracking of citizens with mental issues, better procedures before sales of guns, or whatever.

US Courts have ruled again and again that US citizens DO NOT have the right to own a gun, unless they are members of the militia. I called my Congressman this morning and suggested all registered gun owners (militiamen, rural sheepherders, and southerners, no difference)) in the USA now bve required to serve their country and report for active duty in Iraq. His office thought that was an excellent suggstion!

Americans have such short attention spans when it comes to public policy. Over the past 20 years, the number of violent gun attacks in the US has exploded, and it seems to be accelerating. I can remember the shock I felt when I read about Columbine, and I compare that to the "Again?" feeling I now have when I hear about such things. Immediately after such a mass killing, we all say we want gun control. Then, a month later, we go back to talking about the latest celebrity fiasco. Truth be told, gun control would be hard to implement here. Not because it's a bad idea, or because people here feel any strong love of guns. No, it's because we're just too *** lazy to care. And our indifference is what kills so many innocent people.

Can anyone find an analogy that we can use to begin to discuss this, and arrive at a solution ranging from doing nothing to some sort of gun control?

I can't think of anything that would fit this description, other than a gun. If there was something out there, could we examine the laws governing this items use, and move forward with some discussion. [BTW, I am/was actually ok with gun ownership, and have two handguns and a rifle. Now I find myself really examining this issue, and know that the polarization that is occuring with everyone will not help reach a solution.

Can't we find a good solution here? Is what we have the best there is in relation to guns?

Here's the GA program:

Dishonorable Discharge from Military Service and Coast Guard
Illegal/Unlawful Alien
Secret Service Protective File
Mental Health and Controlled Substance Abuse
Persons Who Renounce Their Citizenship
In addition to the new federal databases, the Georgia Firearms Program checks the following databases:

Georgia Criminal Histories, including Family Violence Convictions
FBI Criminal Histories
Georgia Wanted Person Records
FBI Wanted Person Records
NCIC Protection Order Records
Georgia Mental Health - Involuntary Hospitalizations

can you weigh in on the Liberal theory that it was actually a second shooter that hit Monica? He was spotted on the grassy knowl...lmao

The only "spotting" I'm aware of was a stain on a blue dress. However, I would say it's conclusive proof of a VAST RIGHT WING CONSPIRACY! :)
