With respect to the violence between the Sunnis and the al Qaeda -- actually, I would disagree with the assessment that the al Qaeda have the upper hand. That was true earlier this year when some of the sheikhs began to step forward and some of the insurgent groups began to fight against al Qaeda. The insurgent groups, the nationalist groups, were pretty well beaten by al Qaeda.

This is a different phenomena that''''s going on right now. I think that it''''s not so much the insurgent groups that are fighting al Qaeda, it''''s the -- well, it used to be the fence-sitters, the tribal leaders, are stepping forward and cooperating with the Iraqi security forces against al Qaeda, and it''''s had a very different result. I think al Qaeda has ben pushed up against the ropes by this, and now they''''re finding themselves trapped between the coalition and ISF on the one side, and the people on the other.

And here is the NY Times talking about the Anbar Awakening back in March 2007.

The formation of the group in September shocked many Sunni Arabs. It was the most public stand anyone in Anbar had taken against Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, which was founded by the Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

And here is Colin Kahl in Foreign Affairs

The Awakening began in Anbar Province more than a year before the surge and took off in the summer and fall of 2006 in Ramadi and elsewhere, long before extra U.S. forces started flowing into Iraq in February and March of 2007. Throughout the war, enemy-of-my-enemy logic has driven Sunni decision-making. The Sunnis have seen three "occupiers" as threats: the United States, the Shiites (and their presumed Iranian patrons), and the foreigners and extremists in AQI. Crucial to the Awakening was the reordering of these threats.

When Obama called on the 57 states, was this because Obama is too old to be president?

Posted by cbk16 at 09:42 AM : Jul 23, 2008

How MANY times did he repeat that blunder?? To date McCain has referred to an Eastern European Country that has NOT been in 15 years, not ONCE, not TWICE, not Three times, not Four times but FIVE times. COME ON!! That isn''t a gaffe that''s a lack of mental ability... a MEMORY problem plain and simple.

I was going to simply site the CBS story on Obama''s gaffes- BUT I COULDN''T FIND ONE! So here are some examples from other sources.
* Last May, he claimed that Kansas tornadoes killed a whopping 10,000 people: %u201CIn case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died %u2014 an entire town destroyed.%u201D The actual death toll: 12.

*Obama thinks there are 58 states. %u201COver the last 15 months, we%u2019ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I%u2019ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go.%u201D

*Obama has as much trouble with numbers as he has with maps. Last March, on the anniversary of the Bloody Sunday march in Selma, Alabama, he claimed his parents united as a direct result of the civil rights movement:

%u201CThere was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, Alabama, because some folks are willing to march across a bridge. So they got together and Barack Obama Jr. was born.%u201D

Obama was born in 1961. The Selma march took place in 1965.

.......he''s got WAY too many deals in the works with his Corporate Controllers to simply walk away.....my bad, he''ll have to get back to K-Street Pronto if he wants to keep those Kick-Back $Dollars$ rolling in....

Thanks to CBS for the ongoing transparent bias against McCain. No mention of latest polls showing McCain leading in Ohio, Virginia and within 2 points in Michigan. (But then Couric et al are too busy giving out the Obama love)... Mr. Obama is slipping fast, and despite McCains age, time is on his side.

That''''''''s why I''''''''m begging you to vote for John McCain."

Phux off, McBUSH is a nut case tottering old far.t bush cartel enabler who will continue the same war mongering invasion and threats while tanking our economy and adding to the bush cartel''s massive debt from this fiasco.
With him having his 72 year old finger on the red button and military, given his past as a POW who wants REVENGE against his former captors, that alone should scare the chit out of you that this nut will start WW3 if Bush doesnt do it first.

"the left-leaning Huffington Post"? Really? I had drawn another concluson.

I guess I had assumed that advocating adherence to and respect for the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the rule of Law automatically placed the Huffington Post dead center.

lollll...but after watching this Administration in action - and after watching the MSM cheer them on, I suppose that I should have realized that the center had been moved much further to the right.

In all my years of dealing with the public I have learned ONE thing about people like McCain... the BEST is yet to come. The MORE he tries to prevent these "Senior Moments" the more they will happen. His mental ability is fading and so is his memory. When he attempts to compensate for them is when the REAL fire works will start.

What bull spit! Gaffe''''s are honest mistakes in speaking...however lying about yourself, your ancestors, your religion, your church, your pastor, your friends and associates, and being stupid and not knowing about Austwitcz, and the Selma bridge, and promoting a legislative prowess you absolutely don''''t have, and pretending you know spit about running this country after 143 days...is just flat out LIES AND DISHONESTY!

Now YOUR hatred and bigotry is getting in the way of honesty now. A gaffe is something you just make a mistake on once. ANYONE with a brain KNOWS these are NOT gaffes because he KEEPS repeating the same things over and over. That''s a clear and absolute sign on Mental failure, of Memory problems. If you don''t think so just ask ANY Medical Doctor. Now put away your hood and sheet and lets do the RIGHT thing for the country. Sieg Heil Bush

Now ANYONE who has been listening to John McCain lately and DOES NOT have serious questions about his memory and Mental condition simply does not care. AGE is a reality of life, like so many other things. Under the pressure of the job of President and with the ability to blow away the entire world with the push of a button, a Man who consistently refers to a country that hasn''''t been in existence for a decade and a Half??? We''''d ALL better have a question about THAT!! Sieg Heil Bush

well, if you think a President should be quick on his feet, knowledgeable and fluent in the english language -

you probably didn''t vote for bush, and you won''t vote for McBush II.

a hammock and a shady place to nap is what McBush needs.

All of us will be that age someday, but few of us will EVER be as strong as McCain is now.
