I'd be leery of such a suggestion from any administration, but the very idea that it comes from an acknowledged Progressive, big-almost omnipotent-government advocate scares the liver out of me.

I'd quit the Internet and send all of my correspondence by UPS before I'd participate in such a scheme or allow it to be imposed upon me.

Although the Meddler-in-Chief makes the proposal sound benign, at its core it is a transparent notice that he believes the government should control not only the media over which the Internet travels, but the content that is sent & received, as well.

The statement that the online ID will be "voluntary" is moot.
Income taxes are voluntary- try not paying them.
There isn't one thing I can think of which the government gets involved in that operates efficiently or evasively. And each program of the government, under it's control just gets worse and is another block on the pile to access more demanding control of other aspects of ones life.
Despite Al Gores claim in discovering the internet- it is a private invention and one of the "only" things the "people" have left which isn't controlled by government. We need to keep it!
The government has screwed up this country to no end by controlling that which the private sector can do so much more efficiently, because the government produces nothing- it only takes.
If the government does take this step, it would be imperative that all citizens and corps decline the net in retaliation to gain private control again. If you think for a minute, the government cares about you, you have learned nothing by the history of what they have done- it is for their own advantages they do this and for them only, as well as make someone very rich.

Please stop lying about Al Gore and the Internet. He didn't claim to invent it, or discover it. He helped fund its creation. And it was not a private invention.

It seems keeping the rich getting richer is what we are paying taxes for these days, since that's all the government cares about! Obama's not solely responsible for all of this though. He's just a puppet figurehead, like GWB was.

I fail to see why the government needs to be involved in any way with this. There are already agencies that you can obtain a digital signature from if you want one. Verisign is a popular company.

So why is it that Obama wants to get involved in your individual security all the while this article went out of it's way to try to convince us that the smart card or digital signature will not be issued or controlled by the government. Typically, as we have seen so many times before, when Obama wants to get involved that means he wants to control it. That is why when he could not get net neutrality through Congress he had the FCC expand it's authority to control the internet.

When Obama wants something it never turns out in our best interest.

Any time Osama Obama has a brain fart/idea, America as we know it is in for Muslim style fornication. Any time the government wants to get involved in the everyday affairs of the citizen, the citizen comes up abused. IF CRIME WERE LEGAL, THE GOVERNMENT WOULD BE INVOLVED, THERE WOULD NO ONE ELSE INVOLVED BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT HATES COMPETITION.

Since, according to the article, no government entity is going to assign Internet IDs, what is the problem?

Envision It! Things that we can do now that we will not be able to do without Goverment Required Privately Implimented Total Individual Cyber Activity Tracking.

An individual voluntarily requests a smart identity card from her home state. The individual chooses to use the card to authenticate herself for a variety of online services, including:

?? Credit card purchases,
?? Online banking,
?? Accessing electronic health care records,
?? Securely accessing her personal laptop computer,
?? Anonymously posting blog entries, and
?? Logging onto Internet email services using a pseudonym.

Yeah and the SSN# was never gonna be used for identification either.

Since, according to the article, the administration wants the private sector to lead the implementation of this, why does government need to be involved at all? Best keep them out of it and avoid the possibility of "mission creep".

I've read all kinds of comments and I think: Why would anybody , in the correct set of mind would think this is ID thing is a good idea? Knowing how slow and inefficient the Federal Government is, whe are going to end with another sub-department or brach in the Commerce Department full of bureaucrats wasting tax-payers money while the Chinese and Russians hack their way into the Pentagon, Los Alamos and Fort Knox. Anything to make liberals happy!

Well, we haven't really heard what it is, except that it looks like it is to help prevent identity theft, which would be a good thing. I think the companies that mess up my credit history should be responsible for the damage caused when they let someone else buy something in my name.
