war was never declared ... mission was accomplished a long time ago ... oust saddam and find the (invisible) wmd.
what''s the job of a soldier w/ an M16 in his hand and wearing 80 - 100 lbs of gear? what''s the goal? be specific - Reply to this comment
- au_fait. We have outlived our usefulness there. It''s just more bloodshed with no possible solution. We have destablized a country and started a Civil War that will go on for years to come. SUPPORTING the troops is making as much noise as possible to BRING THEM HOME ALIVE. Your type of support does nothing but appease and rationalize. We have no business being there and I will SUPPORT our troops by making every effort to see to it that they return to the U.S. where they can protect us and themselves in a "humane" fashion.

- rune99; So it HAS happened before! Do we dare dream it could happen here and now? Do we have the common sense and the intestinal fortitude that England had? They seem to do things so effortlessly...Tony Blair was politely encouraged to leave his post early, and he did! Perhaps they reminded him what happened in 1649!

- Now that we are theere, I believe that our efforts are hampered though by bleeding hearts that feel we must treat the "enemy" with humane efforts. They do not treat our troops with the same. I understand we should be the better of the two, but there is a limit. We have far surpassed that limit ages ago.

The "enemy" is the whole of the Iraqi population! this is a civil war AND a war by Iraqi''s to get the occupying army (us) out! The only way to really go after the "enemy" would be to kill every Iraqi! The only way to "win" this debacle would be to slaughter all 20 million plus of them. - Reply to this comment
- I never did state that those who signed up for the armed forces want to be there. I stated that they should have known what they were doing. As for who were the first to go, I do realize who went as I have many friends and family who have made the trip to Iraq and Afghanistan. And yes reservists are part of our armed forces, they know they may called to join the effor.
As for the ware, I am not in total agreement with the war. What were the goals were needed, but there are other places which we should have looked to first. Now that we are theere, I believe that our efforts are hampered though by bleeding hearts that feel we must treat the "enemy" with humane efforts. They do not treat our troops with the same. I understand we should be the better of the two, but there is a limit. We have far surpassed that limit ages ago. - Reply to this comment

- It is not what Bush does and wants to do that is scary. It is the American public that allows him to do what he pleases without accountability. America, you deserve Bush!

We agree.
George Bush should have been impeached and indicted long before the 2004 elections. - Reply to this comment
- The Army, concluding that permanent peace was impossible whilst Charles lived, decided that the King must be put on trial and executed. In December, Parliament was purged, leaving a small rump totally dependent on the Army, and the Rump Parliament established a High Court of Justice in the first week of January 1649.
On 20 January, Charles was charged with high treason ''against the realm of England''. Charles refused to plead, saying that he did not recognise the legality of the High Court (it had been established by a Commons purged of dissent, and without the House of Lords - nor had the Commons ever acted as a judicature).
The King was sentenced to death on 27 January. Three days later, Charles was beheaded on a scaffold outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall, London

- au_fait,
I''m a transplanted Yankee who wouldn''t go back north for all the gold in Ft. Knox. The ignorant slugs who dump on the south are the only yankees who can''t afford to get their butts down here.
Tell me 7-Pesos, when was the last time a southerner moved to where you live? The migration is one way for a reason.
On the war I have to respectfully disagree. The mission in Iraq seems to be a constantly moving target( oust Sadaam, create a democracy, etc,). One thing does appear to be very clear-whatever gains have been made have to be maintained by the Iraqis themselves, we can''t save their country for them. It''s time to draw down our forces in an orderly manner and turn over the territorial gains to the Iraqis to hold onto. If they can''t hold on to the gains we can''t help them any more.
Regarding Gen. Petraeus, if Congress subpoenas him, do you suppose Bush will claim executive privilege? - Reply to this comment

- au_fait, don''t you realize that the first wave of "soldiers" were NATIONAL GUARD AND AMERICAN RESERVISTS? They DID NOT sign up to fight on the front lines of a foreign country. They signed up to protect our homeland ON our homeland! Because Baby Bush initiated the "backdraft" we were scrambling to find help when Katrina hit! Our Guard and Reserves are not designed to be used in front line combat! You do need to check your facts before declaring that everyone who is in the Armed Services wants to be there!!! Shame on you!!

- JJ4401: It''s sickening, greedy, self serving and immoral, but what you say is probably closer to the truth than any of the "reasons" offered so far. He and his gang and nothing more than thugs. They employ the same tactic as organized crime; "We will burn it down and charge you to rebuild it." Kapeesh?

- I always love when people choose to bash the South. If the South is so terrible, why do are there southern states in the top five fastest growing states while no northern states are included. You state it is all rednecks, but what is there to offer in the North, pollution, crime, ignorance... What a place to live. I will take my water views and people who are still pleasent and greet each other on the street. Before judge somehing, why not spend a little time traveling before you show you ignorance.
Also if a person chooses to sign up for the armed forces, they should understand they no longer control there lives. In all practicality they are property of the US Government. War is sensless, but when it is declared, do not tie a soldiers hands. Allow them to do there job and accomplish their goal (right or wrong). - Reply to this comment
- The Real Reason We''re In Iraq: An influential group of conservatives convinced President George W. Bush that it was in America''s best interests to conquer Iraq as a first step toward dominating the oil-producing nations in the Middle East. There was no "exit plan" because we never intended to exit. The plan was, and is, to build military bases in Iraq and stay there forever. Our leaders also see Iraq as a place to make money. So Bush & Co. have set up their friends to cash in on the rebuilding of Iraq.

Thank you. More and more people are finally getting it and I hope the trend continues. In the movie "A face in the crowd" Walter Mathieu has a line where he says, "We get wise to ''em. We always do. That''s our strength." and he was right. In the end America (or at least enough Americans) always get wise to ''em and America is finally getting wise to Bush, Cheney and the real neoconservative agenda. They are the most unAmerican administration in our history and it''s time for real Americans to stop them. - Reply to this comment
- One last thing; After the Holocaust, the Jews adopted the mantra "We will never forget". I suggest we do the same regarding this horrific time in history, so it never, ever happens again. "We will NEVER forget" what Bush and his gang has done to this generation.
