My political views would best be described as libertarian. I cut my teeth on Mill's "on liberty" and quite enjoyed nozick as well. I have always voted republican because I vote my pocket book, I don't find the republican stands on social issues too offensive (until now, that is), and because I think it will be a cold day in h&ll when the libertarians can actually win an election.
In truth, there are others like me in the republican party. Not all of us ascribe to the social agenda of the party. For us, the republican party is a marriage of convenience. We're in "the big tent". But what George Bush has done to civil liberties in this country is deeply offensive to me & would be to anybody who holds the political views I hold. I'm not the only one.
I have no idea who I'll vote for next time. I probably just won't vote for the first time since I've been old enough to do so. Bill Richardson seems to have his head screwed on straight, but again that is likely a wasted vote just as voting for a libertarian would be. - Reply to this comment
- yeah, I liked Jimmy C personality wise, but he was such a quitter...W, well hard to believe now he looked like the lesser of evils, unless one brings Al Gore or Mr. Goose Hunter to mind...lol...so are these guys really the best and brightest...man this is one scary century. Now we have Americas Mayor and John (admittedly a real hero) McCain (a regular political weather vane with his whirling about) facing off against Mr. "Who Me?" Obama and Shrillery (Guess who is moving into the White House with Me) Clinton...MY MY MY... OK, so the office of president can't really save us... lets count on who...ummm...House of Rep (PULEASE) or the Senate (OH NOOOOOOOO)... our bread is so toasted. We have a true leadership CRISIS in this so called nation. My vote is oficially worthless.

- The White House chooses to call a former president irrelevant. He had the decency to mention that he is infact not an official, i.e. a civilian, an American.
This government is finally getting grilled for the mess it has created and their frustration is showing now.
I wonder when the day will be when the current White House explicitly claims it does not deem the American people relevant.
To me that is what the White House in fact has declared by calling Jimmy Carter (a civilian who won the Nobel Peace prize), we do not care for people who do not have blind faith in our motives.
Day in day out, the current White House its their cronies (a la Rumsfeld, Cheney, Gonzales, Rove, Wolfowitz) have tried to hide the issues on hand while refusing to discuss problems at every given opportunity.
What is disgusting at best is that they have shirked responsibility. I do wonder if they are able to sleep at all, knowing full well how BADLY they have screwed up. - Reply to this comment

- Let's see, 20% home mortgage rates. The invoction of the credit control act( the first and last time it was ever used) which caused credit to dry up. The S&L disaster and fallout.
The Iranian hostage crisis which was precipitated by his middle eastern policy.
Give me a break, Carter should shut his mouth and go back to farming peanuts. He is irrelavant!
But then again I would expect CBS news to say he isn't. - Reply to this comment
- Former president Ulysses E. Grant if often regarded as a "mediocre" president. In my opinion Jimmy joined his ranks with the Iran hostage crisis. I would have crawled into a hole and died...shame shame shame.

You're not going to "get rid" of the President. He's there for another year. What you need to concentrate on is voting for the person who closely matches up with your views and beliefs. Please do research All of the candidates. Don't become a TV Ad zombie that votes because of the slickest ad. Vote because you've read up on their records (congressional records: see how they voted; Gubernatorial records, etc.)
Bush is nothing more than a President blinded by his convictions. There is nothing that can be done, except get a good one in the office next time. - Reply to this comment
- egeefay,
The vast majority of Americans are not happy the way the war is going not the countries direction, Overall our economic out look is great, It's the war that has us divided. Even Republicans don't like the Direction the war is going. JFK got us into Vietnam, Johnson f-it up andNixon got us out, but everyone look at nixon as the bad guy, Why is that? when JFK got us involved. I g=just don't get it. - Reply to this comment
- Carter has been a terrific ex-president & has done some very good & useful things.
But as a president, he has been widely regarded by presidential historians as THE WORST. That isn't something I'm making up; it's a fact.
Now, I think it's just possible that "W" might wrest that title from ol' "Our friend inflation... It's going to make us all millionaires. Wouldn't you like to own a million dollar coat?" Jimmy Carter.
I have to confess I voted for W twice. I supported his campaigns with my money. I made a mistake. W has single-handedly shredded the constitution & used it as toilet paper in the presidential outhouse. The things he has done boggle the mind. I thought Clinton should have been impeached & convicted. But I think W should do hard time. How else is one to respond to law-breaking that would be sufficient to send any of us to the pokey for hundreds of years?
I agree W is probably the worst. But ol' Jimmy is a very close runner up.

- Carter is just echoing the sentiments of the vast majority of Americans who are now disallusioned with the Bush administration, don't like where the country is heading, and want a change.
Even Republicans are joining the bandwagon.
Rather than shoot the messenger and point out Carter's own flaws as president 20 years ago, let's all concentrate on how to get rid if the worst president we've ever had.
With Bush's approval ratings at all time lows he is now stooping to liberal tactics like immigration reform so that he will be remembered for something other than the total failure he and his administration has managed to achieve. - Reply to this comment
