- I don't watch Katie Couric much but from when I have she usually has a friendly smile on and is warm - now maybe CBC chose her to do the interview because of her family history with dealing with cancer -I'm not sure but she certainly did not show much empathy and give any off any feeling of "I know what your going through." I think the questions were not hers and if they were all I kept on thinking about was her and her husband's experience and how off base she was to be attacking -because that's what it seemed like. If I kept a score card I would have to say the only place where I was inclined to lean in her favor was when she mentioned the children - I personally think they are too little to "fly". That was the only time where I thought the Edwards were off base. Katie seemed at times to have glassy eyes but yet this mean looking almost angry grimacing face. I think she should relax and watch Diane Sawyer's interviews for some tips.

- I've copied someone else's comments that capture my thoughts on the interview with the Edwards and most important on Katie Couric:
Some People:
Some people would really like to give Katie a chance to fill out the larger role she has accepted.
Some people think that we can ill afford to have key 4th estate roles filled by lightweights, but were willing to postpone judgment to see what she might really be made of.
Unfortunately, some people who were worried that she was way over her head and susceptible to being nothing more than a tool may have been proven correct.
Some people think, once again, that we are screwed.
Some people want their country and their honest institutions back.
Some people, on bad days, give up all hope.

"Some people" are saying that Katie Couric went too far on 60 Minutes. I don't actually know who those people are, because I haven't done any reporting on it. Why bother? "Some people" must be saying it. "Some people" will say anything. And there's no real need to mention their names, because I can just say that "some people" are saying it and get away with it.
Last night on 60 Minutes, Katie Couric kept referring to "Some people." She said that "some" were saying the Edwardses were courageous, and "others" were saying they were callous and ambitious. She said that some people were wondering how someone could be president if he was "distracted" by his wife's health. (This question, in a year when there are two presidential candidates who are themselves cancer survivors, seemed particularly disingenuous.) (And never mind that it was being asked by someone who managed to keep working while dealing with her own husband's terminal illness.)

- You would think that Katie was the only one doing any talking.
The Edwards did fine...considering they had to deal with an inept interviewer who didn't seem to think she was getting the answer SHE wanted, so she asked it again.
And again,
And again....
and revealed absolutely nothing in the way of curiosity about WHY two people would put the greater good before their own personal considerations.
Gee, it would be interesting if she had asked Edwards what his mission would be to be president, than trying to try to frame them as ambitious people who are also bad parents.
Why didn't Katie quit her job when her husband got sick...and her kid needed her??? Why did she only take a month off, while exploiting his illness?
And why are you excusing her shameful performance, Greg Kandra?
This interview, from the editing to the inanity of the questions was clearly about Couric, not about the Edwards. - Reply to this comment
- The 'Edwards Interview' by Ms Couric is one of the worse examples of journalism I have seen in my 60+ years. Clearly she is incapable of reasoned thought and needs to be relegated to the role of a 'talking head'. Give he something to read that was written by someone who has some knowledge and understanding of an issue. Please keep her away from assignments like this or she will kill 60 minutes.

- SHAME on you Katie Couric what a hatchet job you did. And I for one will no longer support you by watching your evening news or your 60 minutes interviews (if thats what you want to call that *** you did last night mostly your opinions)

- Shame on you Katie for attempting such a hatchet job. You've lost my respect. As if Presidents past had not small children or health struggles while in office. I would think that someone without the need to cope with real life would be a lesser servent to those of us who have to cope with ordinary life everyday, presumably unlike yourself. I presume this because anyone with a heart built of coping would never have put the Edwards to the flame like you just did.
Shame. Redundant negativity like that soils the interviewee and you know it, no matter their answer. It was a pure attempt at hatchetry. - Reply to this comment
- Why did Katie Couric keep pressing John and Elizabeth Edwards on 60
Minutes last night about their decision to continue his presidential
campaign when she didn't give up her job as host of the Today Show when
her husband was diagnosed with cancer? - Reply to this comment
- What a hatchett job. Katie Couric should feel ashamed of herself for joining the ranks of the idiocracy. Shame! As if other politicians didn't have young children growing up in the white house. As if FDR didn't have ill health and many other presidents didn't have to cope with their wives' problems. If we had a president that wasn't coping with real life we'd be less served.
Anyone with a brain can see that Katie was batting for the Limbuagh audience types. Shame. If I could only spit at her feet in public I would. - Reply to this comment
- CBS News ACTRESS Katie Couric (60 Minutes 03-25-07)
I found it quite difficult to watch Katie Couric address John Edwards and his wife last night. Katie's performance (poor editing & all) reminded me of the scene from [the motion picture] Broadcast News, when the William Hurt character gets caught editing in a new reaction shot of himself (with forced tears rolling down his cheeks) after he interviews a rape victim.
How many takes/retakes (of manufactured cut away shots -- to Ms. Couric) were there before Katie was happy with the way she looked and delivered her lines.....? - Reply to this comment
- Any president who says, I don't care, or I will not respond to what the people of this country are saying about Iraq or anything else, or I don't care what the Congress does, I am going to proceed %u2014 if a president really believes that, then there are %u2014 what I was pointing out, there are ways to deal with that,"
