- Many thanks to Katie Couric for the interview w/Michael J Fox, to clearify all the talk. I agree w/Mr Fox as an American that; given the chance, American Scientist can accomplish great things. Not that it is a race against the French Scientists whos history of Louis Pasture & Madame Curie made great contributions to humanity, is the subject. Mr Fox speaks greatly to the subject at hand, his high points should not be taken lightly.

- I cannot emphasize how important it is for everyone to differentiate between the 2 kinds of stem cell research (SCR). To say, I am for stem cell research, can be taken either way and there is a huge difference between Embryonic SCR and Adult SCR.
Embryonic SCR is SCR on stem cells taken from an embryo. Adult SCR is SCR on everything else, including the umbilical cord, the nose, eyelid, & bone marrow, etc. Store your baby%u2019s umbilical cord in a Cord Bank to avoid rejection problems from using stem cells from an embryo!
72 to Zero: As of October 2006, adult stem cell research has resulted in 72 cures/ treatments, which has helped hundreds of thousands of people. Embryonic research has resulted in none/zero /zip. Not even has one mouse cured another mouse in over 20 years & BILLIONS$ of embryonic stem cell research! Adult SCR has made money for investors. Embryonic SCR has not and so, the investors are after our tax money.
To Kill or Not to Kill
Embryonic stem cell research requires the killing of an unborn human embryo %u2013 adult stem cell research does not. Don%u2019t let the latest reports fool you. Never has an embryo survived having stem cells removed. If an embryo would survive, what kind of disabled adult would an embryo become after having 10% of his stem cells removed?
The bio-tech industry launches press releases crediting Embryonic SCR with the successes of Adult SCR by not differentiating between the 2 types of stem cell research. Always differentiate! - Reply to this comment
- I have always enjoyed MJF. I am concerned that he has been so deceived by the bio-tech industry to believe that embryonic stem cells heal. In over 20 years of Embryonic SCR (stem cell research), not even one mouse has helped another mouse!
Embryonic SCR is legal & is being done on human embryos. It%u2019s legal because there are few laws that limit it - even though it does require killing an embryo - a human being in the 2nd stage of development %u2013 a scientific fact not a religious position.
Embryonic stem cells have only grown uncontrollably into mutations & tumors. NO SUCCESS, IMMORAL %u2013 Why The Campaign For Embryonic SCR? %u2013 MONEY
Large corporations and individuals have invested BILLIONS into Embryonic SCR to no avail. Of course, they are reluctant to invest further and so why not go after tax money?
Bio-tech lawyers wrote MO%u2019s Amendment 2. The bio-tech industry has invested $30,000,000 to promote politicians who campaign for Embryonic SCR.

MO%u2019s Amendment 2 sounds like its banning cloning when in reality a provision in small print of cloning, a branch of Embryonic SCR. I know of no amendment that guarantees unlimited funds to any industry. www.stemcellresearch.org www.nocloning.org - Reply to this comment
- I support the fight for more stem cell research, but I don't understand why more emphasis isn't placed on umbilical cord stem cells. Umbilical cords are generally discarded after the birth of a baby, and cells derived from these do not present the same ethical dilemmas as those from embryos. It's ethically very acceptable to most of the world. Scientists are currently using technology developed by NASA to rapidly reproduce these cells and with one hundred million babies being born every year, the supply is plentiful. Scientists have identified (in recent studies) that some of these cells expressed the same proteins or markers as embryonic stem cells, and were able to develop into liver cells. Progress is being made in labs where the researchers are looking at the ability of the umbilical cord matrix cells to form new neurons in the brain, which would aid against Parkinson%u2019s disease. There are exciting developments in the scientific community with stem cells research. We just have to keep fighting for the right cause.

- Mr. Fox is a very courageous man for presenting himself to the world in hopes of finding a cure through stemcell research. Mr. Limbaugh on the other hand should tend to his own personal matters. If he feels this was a policital ploy then I would never consider being a member of the Republican party and be associated with him.

- Nice interview Katie. Michael J. Fox summed up things very well when he said that all he asks is that folks who come down on either side of this issue be willing to have a reasonable dialog.

- Are any of u religious right wingers listening? THE CELLS WOULD BE DESTROYED ANYWAY. Organ donations by people who have died have saved countless lives why can't the cells of embryos who would have been discarded anyway save lives as well? God gave us incredible minds to survive and continue to populate this world. If you don't believe in this type of research then don't use it. God forbids anything happens to any of your kids, but if it does then don,t use the research. Pray to God, and feed ur loved one for the rest of their lives through a feeding tube. Me, I support it for the preservation of life.

- The cloning of cells which, if implanted in a human uterus could become a person, certainly could pose some interesting philosophical and religious questions. This cloning of embryonic stem cells or blastocysts could also be compared to bone marrow transplants or any blood cell manipulation. Prior to implantation in a uterus these cells are just that, cells, so why the out cry. Those of us that are catholic believe that we are all here for a reason, could that reason be a cure for people afflicted with Parkinson%u2019s and Alzheimer%u2019s disease?

- Will CBS news be giving equal time to those who oppose embryonic stem cell research? The news was quite slanted to those in favor of such research. Will Ms. Couric be interviewing Patricia Heaton, who made a commercial along with several other notables opposing Amendment 2?
