CBS Evening News Investigates ACORN, The Group Accused Of Registering Dead People To Vote
- I''m glad that there is an investigation of potential voting irregularities now. It does make me wonder what would have been learned if an investigation had been done in the primaries, but it''s too late to look at those registrations now.
Maybe it is time for there to be country-wide rules so there is less chance for groups to pick states that may be easier to try to outfox.
Good for the elections officials that are doing a thorough investigation and shame on any that are blaming the media for stirring things up. Better to identify irregularities now than after the election. - Reply to this comment
- Though ACORN believes that the right to vote is not, and should never be, a partisan issue, attacks from groups threatened by our historic success continue to come, motivated by partisan politics and often perpetuated by the media without full investigation of the facts.

I respected you in your former posts and you said you were bipartisan. Now it seems nothing a republican says can be taken at face value. this is as objective as any democratic partisan gets. May I ask how you can reconcile these two statements.
From the article written here how do you know it is inaccurate. Was the Bridgeport registrar a republican or a democrat.
I have heard other reporting on this matter and find that in a given district in Ohio there was much higher false registrations than mentioned here. - Reply to this comment

Re: The Truth About ACORN''s Voter Registration Drive
As The Nation pointed out recently, ACORN''s success in registering millions of low-income and minority voters has made it "something of a right-wing bogeyman."
Though ACORN believes that the right to vote is not, and should never be, a partisan issue, attacks from groups threatened by our historic success continue to come, motivated by partisan politics and often perpetuated by the media without full investigation of the facts. - Reply to this comment
As a result, there have been a few recent stories about investigations of former ACORN workers for turning in incomplete, erroneous, or fraudulent voter registration applications. Predictably, partisan forces have tried to use these isolated incidents to incite fear of the "bogeyman" of "widespread voter fraud."
But we want to take this opportunity to set the record straight and tell you a few facts to show how these incidents really exemplify everything that ACORN is doing right:
Fact: ACORN has implemented the most sophisticated quality-control system in the voter engagement field, *but in almost every state we are required to turn in ALL completed applications, even the ones we know to be problematic.*
Fact: ACORN flags incomplete, problem, or suspicious cards when we turn them in, but these warnings are often ignored by election officials. Often these same officials then come back weeks or months later and accuse us of deliberately turning in phony cards.- Reply to this comment
- Fact: Our canvassers are *paid by the hour, not by the card,* so there is NO incentive for them to falsify cards. ACORN has a zero-tolerance policy for deliberately falsifying registrations, and in the relatively rare cases where our internal quality controls have identified this happening we have fired the workers involved and turned them in to election officials and law-enforcement.
Fact: *No charges have ever been brought against ACORN itself. Convictions against individual former ACORN workers have been accomplished with our full cooperation, using the evidence obtained through our quality control and verification processes.*
Fact: Voter fraud by individuals is extremely rare, and incredibly difficult.
There has never been a single proven case of anyone, anywhere, casting an illegal vote as a result of a phony voter registration. Even if someone wanted to influence the election this way, it would not work.
Fact: Most election officials have recognized ACORN''s good work and praised our quality control systems. Even in the cities where election officials have complained about ACORN, the applications in question represent less than 1% of the thousands and thousands of registrations ACORN has collected. - Reply to this comment
- Fact: Our accusers not only fail to provide any evidence, they fail to suggest a motive: there is virtually no chance anyone would be able to vote fraudulently, so there is no reason to deliberately submit phony registrations. ACORN is committed to ensuring that the greatest possible numbers of people are registered and allowed to vote, so there is also NO incentive to "disrupt the system" with phony cards.
Fact: Similar accusations were made, and attacks launched, against ACORN and other voter registration organizations in 2004 and 2006. These attacks were not only groundless, they have since been exposed as part of the U.S. Attorneygate scandal and revealed to be part of a systematic partisan agenda of voter suppression. - After reading this article I have a question for you GOP supporters. Do you actually beleive these charges considering the source?
I mean lets look at their record!
1. We know Iraq has WMDs and Operation Iraqi Freedom will be a cake walk.
2. The Iraqis will greet us a liberators and the post invasion occupation will be brief?
3. The democrats are wrong! The total cost of operation Iraqi Freedom will not exceed 50 billion and will last less than 6 months.
4. The fundamentals of our economy are strong!
Guys there are many more but the point is clear. The GOP has no credibility left so anything they say cannot be believed, unless you are a fool. - Reply to this comment

I am glad that you want these things investigated. Lets contact the London times and have them tell what they found when they recounted Floridas vote in 2000 in August of 2001.
How about discussing how the GOP sent supporters down there to disrupt the vote recount in areas with a significant majority of Democrats?
This stuff about Obama being involved with ACORN is probably trumped up charges that have no meaning. If there was any truth to it the investigators would certainly have done everything they could to pin Obama to it considering its a GOP administration.
Based on the these charges are fabrications that are only intended to divert public attention from the economy. McCain knows he cannot win if the focus is on real issues since he has supported Bushs agenda 90 percent of the time. - Reply to this comment
- We thought the GOP suppressed honest (we thought honest) voting in Florida in 2000 and OHio in 2004. I still think they went too far. Now ACORN is using just as dirty tactics on the other side. I''d order popcorn and watch them fight it out, except that Obama is such a dirty person and would be such a dirty President.

When a whole boxful of ACORN''''s forms turned into one office is found to contain almost all obvious frauds -- that''''s a sign of fraud. Saying that boxful constitutes ''''only a small percent'''' nationally -- should not be presented as a serious defense.

I actually think it is funny Obama got caught. He used ACORN to do the same tactic during the primary season. Clinton even filed a report with the FBI. DNC officials turned a deaf ear to all the reports from precincts. But Republicans won''t put up with this ***. What''s that saying fool me once shame on me, fool me twice SHAME ON YOU. I am loving watching the show, deflate the messiah.

- I guess these people feel that if it was alright for Bush to steal one in Florida and have the Supreme Court uphold it....than they ought to see if they can''t cop one for themselves.

Rev - get your facts right. There are no allegations of voter fraud.
You are talking about VOTER REGISTRATION fraud, which does not affect actual votes.
And, since you Repubes keep saying polls don''''t matter, and only votes do, you should have no complaint at all.

Oh but yes it can. They found 4,000 dead people have been registered in Houston TX. Some showed they voted in March primary. There is only one problem---they were dead. Someone registered and voted used their name. - Reply to this comment

- Conn- with thousands of fake and duplicate names
OH-registered the same person 17 times.
When ACORN turns in a whole box of obvious fakes, that''s not just some on the street collectors cheating ACORN. That''s ACORN supervisors not even trying to catch fakes.
IE,ACORN supervisors trying to sabotage the validation process. - Reply to this comment
- It is so funny that Bertha Lewis, of ACORN, said "It was purely politically motivated. The right wing and specifically the Republicans."
Conn- with thousands of fake and duplicate names
Houston TX 4,000 dead people registered to vote
OH-registered the same person 17 times.
NV- 2 Dallas Cowboys registered
13 states have reported voter fraud. I am a Democrat and even Democrats are smart enough to know this is not a right wing conspiracy. There should be no voter suppression and no fraud either. This organization is corrupt and there needs to be a federal investigation. Makes other organizations look bad. - Reply to this comment
- OBAMA TRAINED ACORN!!! WHAT NEXT OBAMA??
Troopergate is nothing..How about OBAMAGATE.
I dont care who won the debate. I was one month ago going to vote for Obama. And then saw an Ad on Obama and Ayers. So I decided to investigate and what I found appalled me. I cannot beleive people are thinking of Voting for Obama when there is a dangerous pattern.
1.Obama and Bill Ayers Annenberg Challenge Coverup
2.Obama and Alwadi, a palestine terrorist
3.Obama and Rev Wright
4.OBama and the socialist demcratic association
5.Obama and Acorn
6.Obmaa and Rev Flaggert
7.Hamas donated 30k to Obama
8.International Solidarity Movement
9.Wheels of Justice
10.Rezko
11.And now ACORN to the list of Obama radical associations
Take all of Obama associates and his comments he has made and ill sum up Obama.
Obama is the most left wing radical terrorist sympathizer who is pro-muslim and anti-Isreal. Obama is pro-black. Obama is arrogant, lies and throws people under the bus to pursue power. Obama is dangerous for this country. In a post 911 World , I dont understand how the Main Stream Media is not reporting or investigating Obama background. CAN anyone name a person in the past besides Michelle, Rev WRight, BIll AYers, Rezko who can VOUCH for Obama. - Reply to this comment
- This is happening in swing states. A boxful of Micky Mouse forms won''t allow Mickey to vote, but it does clog up the processing so that forms from dead people etc are getting through unexamined.
A typical Alinsky/Obama tactic. Confuse and disorganize. Sabotage the process so that later you can call the election invalid if it doesn''t go your way (as Obama did in the primary in Michigan). - Reply to this comment

- The biggest problem is the approximately 1.2 million American voters that the Republican VOTER SUPPRESSION EFFORTS will DISENFRANCHISE.
Acorn is simply another "Fox Fantasy"
The TINY NUMBER of "questioned" registrations will have NO EFFECT ON THE ELECTION
10,000 QUESTIONED registrations out of 1,300,000 ACORN Registrations are "suspect"
That is only 0.7% of all the registrations filed by Acorn
10,000 QUESTIONED registrations out of 212,000,000 registered voters in the USA
So the QUESTIONED registrations are only 0.004% of ALL VOTERS in the USA.
ALL OF THESE QUESTIONED REGISTRATIONS will be REJECTED by the county registrars. So NO VOTER FRAID will occur.
This was NOT an effort to CREATE VOTES IN THE ELECTION. NONE of these false REGISTRATIONS were going to result in actual VOTES.
These false registrations were done by EMPLOYEES TRYING TO UP THEIR REGISTRATION NUMBERS. These "phantoms" were NEVER going to SHOW UP at the polls! So NO VOTER FRAUD would have occurred.
So this "Registration Fraud" is really just a smokescreen by McCain, and the GOP and an attempt to throw doubt into the campaign by a candidate who is losing badly. - Reply to this comment
