- ***Now do you see the reality of NOT announcing a timetable...****
It has long been understood that the reason US soldiers have been under attack from the Iraqis is because they are there. When they know we are leaving they''ll celebrate like they were supposed to when we arrived.
The only group that will be unhappy to see us leave is al-Queda. They wanted us in one war and they had us in two. When we leave Iraq they will have to settle for one war in Afghanistan - Reply to this comment
- Give me a break CBS!!! That is a cheap shot you made towards the RNC...who says a video clip that show patriotism has to have "real" soldiers. The clip was only to compliment the essay written. Let''s get to REAL news and not cheap shot nonsense!!

- That this patriotic montage was totally faked is NOT surprising!
It''s just like the candidates'' suggestion AND promise that they stand for change! That''s fake, too!
Afterall, how much change can you make when you''ve already made commitments to carry out the policies of your predecessor, George W. Bush, and you represent 90% of what he stands for?! Not much, HUH?
And since the GOP has been in charge ostensibly for the last 14 years, and IS responsible for the current disastrous shape of America; what is it they really want?! A chance to fix America that they''ve BROKEN?!
And, WE''RE supposed to BELIEVE they''ll do THIS?!
They won''t! And I won''t listen to their lies anymore! - Reply to this comment
- OK guys, get a grip. I''m an Obama supporter but this outcry by uninformed people is ridiculous.
First - Can you imagine the outcry if they had gotten real soldiers to use as props in a campaign video? All of you would have been equally outrages, and justifiably so.
Second -- the military has a strong prohibition on any active duty member of the armed services appearing in uniform on behalf oandidates. At the Repub convention, there were two decorated Seals in the audience who got special permission to appear -- if they were in civilian clothes and did not "appear." One of the speakers who did not get the message referred to them from the podium and the camera shot them. They remained seated and did not acknowledge the reference as everyone clapped. Afterward the RNC profusely apologized to the military for breaking the rules. So that''s why "real" soldiers don''t appear in campaign videos unless its general pics of combat, etc.
Third, can you imagine the outcry if they had filmed and used a reaL military funeral?
So get a reality check and even if you are partisan, like me, it doesn''t mean you have to ignore facts. - Reply to this comment
- It is absolutely filthy of McCain and the RNC to stage these kinds of scenes for use in this video. It dishonors the military, insults the sacrifices of our brave soldiers, and shows nothing but contempt for the American people.
And now we learn that many of the photos of smiling African-Americans were stock photos from Getty Images. Just how much do McCain and the RNC hate and despise America, to run this kind of transparent dupe on the citizenry? - Reply to this comment
- Seriously, why would footage from an actual funeral be used in a political ad? Who do you think would approach fallen soldiers'' families to ask if anyone videotaped the service, or could we shoot an upcoming service?
Get serious folks! Of course that aspect would be staged... - Reply to this comment

- What?
You expect these GOP tools who have been telling us lies for the last 8 years, to put ut an honorable ad?
What planet are you on? The Republican attack system is very simple actually. Create a grotesquely distorted caricature, broadcast the delusion at the top of your lungs, and hope that you manage to reinforce just enough cynicism and hopelessness to ensure the election of someone who truly cares only for funneling all of the country''s wealth and power into the hands of a tiny, corrupt elite.
The American electorate eats up the drama like a soap opera, but they are too stupid to realize that it''s real.
So what do we get? 4100 of our kids dead in a war that should never have been waged, a shaky economy, record deficits....the list goes on. Stupid IS as stupid DOES. - Reply to this comment
- Let me get this out of the way first: Yes, I served six years in the Army.

Steve ... you always should keep reading ... since selective facts have no better basis in fact than selective opinions ... which I''ll readily admit mine is.
".... small set of contributions from deployed troops at this point in 2008 -- just 323 donations -- should not be extrapolated to form conclusions about military personnel overall."
I''m not sure that 134 donations to Obama indicates anything in a force that numbers 700,000 (+) something you should know from your six years. Me personally, I think 134 still represents effectively the comment "few". - Reply to this comment
- Phony , just like everything republican!

- lollll..and the generic voice of the Republicans - that lying, shameful voice of dishonor, greed, and immorality - arrives to drown out the truth.
Time to go....think, America, before you vote - do not sell out our nation and the futures of your children for a basket of Republican lies. - Reply to this comment
- Which is exactly why few soldiers will vote for Obama ... who announced a fixed time table for withdrawal; and therefore gave the enemy an exact schedule of when the balance of power will shift ... anybody want to volunteer to be in the units still left in Iraq when that happens? Now do you see the reality of NOT announcing a timetable, for those of you who''ve never been priviledged to serve? That position speaks more to political expediency and inexperience than any other.

Democrat Barack Obama has received nearly six times as much money from troops deployed overseas at the time of their contributions than has Republican John McCain, and the fiercely anti-war Ron Paul, though he suspended his campaign for the Republican nomination months ago, has received more than four times McCain''s haul.

I know that chickenhawks have a hard time believing that real soldiers do not support chickenhawks, but that is why they are chickenhawks: They excel at believing they and only they deserve what they want. - Reply to this comment
- "Republicans HAVE to use fake soldiers...
REAL soldiers would not want to have anything to do with a Vice Presidential candidate that violates OPSEC and places the lives of the unit - and even of her own son - in jeopardy by telling al-Qaeda and the rest of the world that a juicy target like her son should arrive in Iraq on 9/11.
