QUOTE by OpenMind56: "His story of hard work, achievement, and paying back his debts is one to aspire to, not to condemn. It never ceases to amaze me that Americans can be so supportive about some things, yet so narrow-minded about others."

Thank you, OpenMind56. Me too!

One has to wonder if all the unreasonable condemnation is nothing more than JEALOUSLY because a lowly young man with no worldly possessions, no influential family, even unable to speak English, was able to seek out America's vast educational opportunities that many Americans AVOID -- work his rear-end off for decades and become an esteemed neurosurgeon who every day saves fellow American's lives.

Those who have CHOSEN to be the least educated, and the most lazy -- and therefore the least successful, are always the most fervent, intolerant haters.

To pearlleticia -

CBS is talking about THIS particular dedicated physician probably because it IS much more in vogue to TENACIOUSLY relay ONLY the stories about illegal immigrant drug dealers, rapists and murderers. It already IS the nefarious immigrants who receive the majority of the public's attention.

It's about time Americans hear the other side of the story. Many of the immigrants who once hopped the border fence are now extremely valuable American citizens. Some, like Dr. Quinones, are obviously so valuable they're INDISPENSABLE to our American society. Do we condemn them all?

Dr. Quinones has NOT been illegal since PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN'S "Immigration Reform & Control Act of 1986." Dr. "Q" EARNED his American citizenship while studying at Harvard Medical School. What more would you demand from a
once-illegal-immigrant?

I am also against illegal immigration. But isn't it to our own country's benefit to act intelligently and reasonably and separate the good from the bad? Why not deport the illegal lawbreakers and leaches while still applauding those who have become an invaluable asset to our country?

INDISCRIMINATE hate and condemnation of ALL once-illegal-immigrants is not only outrageously unreasonable, it's also moronically STUPID!

Many Americans (unless they are Native Americans)seem to have forgotten their origins---which was across a border or an ocean. Dr. Q is exceptional, but not a fairy tale story. His story of hard work, achievement, and paying back his debts is one to aspire to, not to condemn. It never ceases to amaze me that Americans can be so supportive about some things, yet so narrow-minded about others.

I think the key words here are LEARNED ENGLISH, became a CITIZEN. If each border jumper would accompl;ish those two things, it would be better for all of us. No more Head Start, etc. It still irks me when I have to "Press one for English". No Mexican national anthems,

My former husband, when six years old, was taken by his mother to a white building (# rooms) and was told that the building was school. He did not speack English, and peed his pants for the first few days because his teacher didn't speak GERMAN. Finally, some of the older children took him in hand and helped him learn. Although his family still speak their Alsatian dialect at home, he is fluent in English. And no Head Start program for him!

Is there a head start for me if I move to Mexico? Can I sing the USA national anthem? Can I get welfare or social security there? I don't think so.

BTW, I live in Texas, where there are many many illegals.

You go girl SusieP6.
Very well put. The gringo's have a saying, "Empty kettles make the loudest noises." My father's entry was similar. He too worked hard, paid his OWN way, learned the language, EARNED his citizen ship, and had to be begged to collect social security years after he qualified. His motto "We were raised to work hard, and never accept charity." He died at
90yrs of age, after working in his/our country for 75years.
If people could only accept the fact that we have good people in every race, that want to
improve their lives. Like Dr. Q, my dad, and many more. I am a proud daughter of an honorable man from Mexico.

Why is it that our country picks on the mexican border but no other nationality that comes to the usa illegally? Do we hate mexicans or latino decent. If anyone has a right to be mad it's me.

I am an american indian and did not invite all you whites of english dutch german and so on decent to my country and to take over and put us on reservations.

And may I remind you long before you came the spanish were here first. We have let you come and making a nice living and live in nice houses and drive nice cars, only to hear you moan and groan how bad it is. Bull, you made it that way for yourselves.

Your to good to get your hands dirty and take jobs like the illegals do. With every nationality there is a bad bunch in them but that doesn't make the whole race bad and that's plain stupid to even think that way whether, they are white or yellow or black.

So all you whiners get off your duffs and become more productive citizens, you'll feel better in the end.

I just noticed that this Site apparently SUBSTITUTES the letter "q" in place of a Spanish accented "n".

Try googling "Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa." There is only one "q" in the name "Quinones."
