I have stopped watching the major networks news broadcasts some time ago, and now I know why. The story on the wild turkey release was so distorted that it was pathetic. Steve Harman is no journalist. I know for certain that he read the press release in its entirety, but chose to report the story based on his own agenda.

For the person who blames hunters on the near extinction of the wild turkey, at the turn of the century hunters had a very small role in killing wild turkey. The true villains are those who began clear cutting our land, thereby taking away the turkey's habitat. Today, hunters are the leaders in conservation and preserving our wonderful hunting heritage. Without hunters there is no such thing as conservation.

If Steve was so off-target, then why did you NWTF hunters not come right out and tell the children that you captured free turkeys, imprisoned them for the night, released them right back where they came from, and plan to shoot those lovely wings as they soar (what CBS appropriately misspells "sore") in the sky -- maybe even for your Thanksgiving meal?

What were you afraid of, huh, big guys? That the kids would cry, be horrified and outraged, and call you a bunch of liars and kidnappers and killers?

If you had admitted the truth then and there, you couldn't slowly indoctrinate and desensitize them later, could you? (It's like if you plunge a frog into hot water, he'll jump out, right? So you gotta turn up the temp gradually so he won't know he's being boiled to death.)

You're no heroes, to clear-thinking, compassionate adults, to kids or to turkeys. You are just a bunch of bloodthirsty yahoos who can't let go of the past, when hunting was a necessity, and move into the modern world, when hunting is an excuse for an adreneline-pumped shooting spree. I find this quote from Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina apropos: "Hypocrisy in anything whatever may deceive the cleverest and most penetrating man, but the least wide-awake of children recognizes it, and is revolted by it, however ingeniously it may be disguised."

this story is ridiculous. steve hartman and whoever else contributed to this story should be ashamed of themselves. you have no idea what kind of positive impact hunters and members of the nwtf have had on wild turkey populations. you're all a bunch of fools.

for the person that said turkey hunters are the reason for wild turkeys were near extiction get real it has to do with people taking over their natural habitats and taking their food sources away in those natural habitats it also has to do with them getting illnesses and yes the turkey hunters should get credit for bringing the wild turkey population back because i am sure that you played no part in it so tell me why your so concerned that they pretended to rescue turkeys so the kids could have an educational day learning about them did you ever think they are our next generation and if we dont teach them to continue to preserve our wildlife who is going to do it?

I had a rough day at work and was not happy at home when this story came on the TV. By the end of it, I was laughing so hard I was crying. What a great way to end a bad day!
The reporter was perfect and I hope he keeps finding these types of stories.
Thank you so much,
Judy

Um, I notice none of you hunters are quick to explain why the wild turkey was almost driven to extinction in the first place. It was hunters that almost wiped them out, and now they want to be praised for bringing them back? And they apparently want to fool kids into seeing things their way by staging fake publicity stunts, then wonder why anyone would find that odd. It's a little like slave owners saying they're helping blacks by giving them room and board. If the hunters are doing so much, why must they fake events and fool children to make their point?

CBS News should be embarrassed by the buffoonery exhibited by Steve Hartman. Steve, I must say I%u2019m astounded by your clearly missing the point of the wild turkey release in Tampa. You botched the story with your frail attempts at comedic reporting. Katie Couric was even speechless at the end of your story. She appeared flabbergasted with your mindless hyperbole!
Restoration of wild turkey populations throughout our country is one of our most prominent wildlife conservation success stories%u2014not that you would know this because you admitted to not reading the press release distributed by the NWTF prior to the Tampa event.
Hunters are the primary supporters of wildlife and wildlife conservation in our country. The funds hunters put up ensure that there is suitable habitat and appropriate numbers of wildlife for the nation, including you, to enjoy. Yet you were too sightless to report this in your shabby efforts to attain laughs with your dreadful reporting.
What better way to teach youngsters about wildlife conservation than to allow them to handle a wild turkey.
At least you included one fact near the end of your story. It came from one of the youngsters who participated in the Tampa event. She said, %u201CThis has been such an amazing experience; they just spread their beautiful wings and just sore off into the sky. It's just amazing."
Those wild turkeys released in Tampa need to be saved alright. They need to be saved from turkeys posing as television journalists!!
