- There are a few facts that must be accepted: in this country, hispanics, as well as other etnicities, are discriminated, no matter if legal immigrants or not, and no matter if born right here or born abroad. But angloamericans are smart: they allow tokens of democracy and social tolerance everywhere, Washington political positions included. I see no wrong in that. But trying to blame Mexican illegals as a fault of their own is quite shortsighted, if not total ignorance. What are we doing in Irak? Trying to make sure we will have oil. What are these Mexicans after? Means for them and their families to have, if not three, at least a meal a day. So, getting rid of the moral questions that this problem should arise in our minds by merely saying that what is illegal is illegal, period, is a showing of ignorance or of blind-ness brought precisely by our prejudices. What about investing our tax monies in improving the Mexican so called democracy, which I think it is not, and improving their ways so that there is a fairer distribution of capital, etc., etc. That they are not honest we know. But we can monitor them effectively since it would be our money. Are we not throwing away billions of tax monies in Iraq just to benefit a few corporations? Isn't it one of our truisms that money talks?

- Wendy states that she thinks that Americans don't want Mexicans coming here because we're prejudiced. Obviously she doesn't know a thing about the country to which she wants to immigrate. So why does she want to come here?
I think giving cameras to the illegals makes them think that they're special. It's just not the way to stem the tide of illegal immigration.
There are hundreds of Cubans who can't get Visa's to immigrate here to escape their own country. They risk life and limb and leave their families behind knowing they may never see them again. Mexico's problem is it's own. It's people would want to stay if they could make a living. They have no real legitimate excuse for the border dashes. On the other hand; every Cuban who risks his or her life to come here has a very legitimate reason.
The U.S. is hardly a prejudicial country. We're a melting pot. If Mexico would let foreigners do things that their own citizens do then other changes would follow. Mexico is refusing to fix what's broken and dumping it's problems on the U.S. Legal immigrants deserve their rights and the illegals flooding in from Mexico must stop. That fence is one of the best ways to stop it. - Reply to this comment

- Usually I'm a big fan of Steve Hartman's stories but this one was a major disappointment. It was a one-sided pity party for the poor illegals that we are supposed to feel sorry for. I find it impossible to muster any sympathy for them at all. They sneak into our country and steal from tax payers, all the while expecting us to cater to them. I don't see why I should have to chose between English and Spanish on an ATM in the USA!! My mother is from another country; she came here legally and learned to speak English. There is no reason in the world why the Mexican immigrants can't do the same thing.

- Katie, I think that the photo project was GREAT!!! I so much enjoyed looking at the photos from two perspectives. I would like to be able to have US Citizens realize that it is a blessing to have been born and raised here and not to be the ones on the outside looking in at what we have and sometimes often take for granted. To all you people that are upset about this May god forgive you as you will most likely sleep well tonight with full stomachs and with your family, while these people freeze and are hungry and dont have their families in hopes they can have a better life for their families. They arent terrorist,(which we apparently allow into our country with no problem and judge our neighbors as criminals) just people in search of a better life just like us. I thought thats what makes all us americans different from the rest of the world is that we are COMPASSIONATE!! Katie & CBS THANK YOU!!!

- I am so sorry their country is such a mess, but there is a proper way to enter the US. Crossing the illegaly is just that ILLEGAL. There is no diference from breaking into a home and crossing the border. If they are injured or their feet hurt ~Awwww~ to bad that is the risk. Should we feel bad for a bank robber whom gets injured during a crime? Should we support this robber for the rest of his life? Spend more of OUR taxes on waisted programs/ maybe we should learn his form of speech too so its much easier for them? Hell Give em a house too.
ILLEGAL IS ILLEGAL!!!!!!!!!!!
Enter legaly ~ WELCOME ~

Your comparison is 100% wrong...there are legal means to come to America. It's been that way for a long time. People do it everyday. People except most Mexicans and countries south of Mexico. Illegal aliens lack the motivation and dedication to migrate it legally.

If hundreds of years ago, Native Americans had in place an effective immigration policy, most of us would not be in this country today. Instead "illegal" Europeans entered this country in pursuit of a better life than they had in England. Many of those "illegals" made great contributions to the development of what is now the United States of America. What do we have to fear from people who come here for the same purpose as did our ancestors. Some would say it was okay to illegally displace Native Americans. So, why is it not okay for people looking for hope to come to America for minimum wage jobs that none of us "legals" want? - Reply to this comment

Katie, as a woman, I was very happy to see you at the helm of the CBS evening news, but after this report by Steve Hartman, I will change channels and discourage others as well from watching your newscast. Your report was very shallow and an insult and outrageous to every tax paying citizen in the United States. What don%u2019t you understand about %u201Cillegal%u201D! Our country is being invaded! . It%u2019s true, we are a nation of immigrants, HOWEVER, when the Statue of Liberty was erected in 1886; there were less than 65 million Americans. Today, we are a crowded country of 300 million people with problems of sprawl, pollution and disappearing open space. From 2000 to 2005, 86% of U.S. population growth was the result of immigration and births to immigrants and it is expected there will be about 500 million people in the U.S by mid-century. Without securing the border and limiting legal immigration to about 200,000 a year, we are on a path to a billion Americans by 2100. We must control immigration because of the long range economic, social and environmental costs to our nation. The U.S. population must be in balance with natural resources sufficient to provide a quality of life for our children and grandchildren. So Katie, I bid you farewell.
