Bloggers Blast Outdoor Magazine For Firing Jim Zumbo After He Said Assault Rifles Have No Place In Hunting
- The man made a mistake. He was wrong and has admitted his error. I can understand what he meant since an Assault Rifle is a fully automatic military weapon and illegal to privately own without an appropriate FFL. People who don't understand the difference between an Assault Rifle and a semi-auto that looks like one understandably took offense at his comment. I am a rifle owner and Viet Nam veteran and do not take offense to his statement as I believe he intended it to be taken. Give him a break.

- Zumbo's First Amendment rights are still secure. He had the right to say what he wanted, he exercised that right, and he retains that right today. He can say whatever he wants. It's just that his former customers (us) and his former employers (Outdoor Life, Remington) no longer are listening to what he has to say. CBS also has the right to say what it wants, and spin stories any way it wants. That's why it's former customers are all watching Fox News.

- What gun zombies forget is that it is not guns that protect our constitution - its our system of government that does. The checks and balances and our representative process (voting) is what protects our constitution and our freedom. Without this, no number of weapons could protect us. Our government and our country would fall apart if it was weapons we relied on to protect our constitution and our freedom.

- Assault weapons ARE terrorists weapons. How many deer do you need to wipe out at once? Everytime someone speaks the truth (whether it be on gun control or global warming) the right (republicans) go ballistic. They want the right to destroy everything in their path (people and our environment) and damned be anyone who tries to restrict their wide open throttle to destruction.

Dont feel bad for Dumbo. Because of his non-sense we have to discuss this on a national media blog. CBS, NBC, & ABC are not at all educated on firearms and will attempt (as they are doing now) to use it as "ammo" against the 2nd Amendment.
People our Constitution is worth protecting, every bit of it. You may not like all of it, but its what we have and what we were born with.
These are rights secured by your fathers and their fathers before them on foreign and domestic battlefields.
THESE ARE YOUR BIRTH RIGHTS. - Reply to this comment
- All said and done, I feel bad for Jim Zumbo that he lost his job. However, for a professional that has been writing columns for magazines for so many years, he must have had certain warnings throughout his career, that told him what was permitted to say and not invited to say in his professional opinions, or his job would be gone. Ask him and see if he knew what was expected of him and if he went against the desires of corporation which fed him. If he willfully made a choice knowing it was not in the magazines best of interest, then he was ready to retire anyway.

- Come to think about it, I repent! Maybe perhaps if we look at things with a different light, we could say that a bow hunter has the best sport. Think of the hunter as a acupunturist who is only trying to hit all of the right pressure points on an animal, to relieve all of the muscle aches and pains, from running around in the woods all day trying to avoid other animals or traps or to avoid noisy guns. Now if you have a croww bow you can make one of those cute creatures of the forest look like a pin cushion and can see that the aches and pains will all soon be gone. Ever wonder about why some people would ever dream to have 6 inch needles placed all over their body and say it feels good? Yikes!!!

- From the constitutional perspective the second amendment is in place to protect the entire Constitution. That includes the first amendment even if it is when he points out that low powered, low accuracy rifles are not the best choice for hunting.
From a practical perspective we don't really know what he meant since "assault style rifles" mean different thing to different people. Some think an SKS qualifies and others think only full auto qualifies.
If one must lambast the journalist please do so on the grounds of imprecise terminology. However he still has the right to say it. - Reply to this comment
- If I had my way, everyone in USA would have to go through a hunter safety course and I mean everyone over age 16. Under FEMA law made in 1962 and 1963 every person in the USA belongs to the government and they have the total right to move you remove you or your stuff no matter what it is or how much it costs for all purposes of extreme emergencies and disasters and war. Canada and England train their people and have very high reservist people also to help protect their country. We should do same. Usually its the people that do not follow laws of the land that create problems, not others that try to protect themselves or communities or to hunt with valid permits where needed. I'm not sure how sporty it is to hunt with a auto tool, but everyone have their own dreams they choose to fulfill in this short lifetime. Lets make sure those people and all people get trained for safety first, so the rest of us can sleep at night.

- BJR361,
"If the NRA had its way, we would all be walking around with guns strapped to our hips a la OK Corral days."
An interesting quote, but here in the State of Virginia, citizens are lawfully entitled to do exactly that. Any state resident may carry a weapon in full view, say, in a holster on his hip, laying on the seat of his car in full view, etc.
You only need a license if you want to carry it concealed. I guess that means the streets should be covered in blood, huh? Sorry to disappoint you. - Reply to this comment

- ClosetHippy,
Truly the delusional are the ones who believe that guns can somehow be banned out of existance. If you want to fight crime and violence in America, do it by fighting against the harmful "WAR ON DRUGS". Prohibition creates a huge black market where drug gangs and drug dealers make BILLIONS of dollars in profits. They can and will buy all the guns they want regardless of what the law says.
Exactly which part of "THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS, SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED."
do you not understand?
Keep in mind that there are quite a few NRA members in our armed forces and our military and they take that oath they took to defend our constitution very seriously! If they didn't we all may as well kiss America goodbye.
If ever there was an ANTI-GUN NUT closethippy definitely seems to be one. - Reply to this comment
- Who cares what your interpretation of the 2nd amendmant is. I have my own and it is that is outdated.
Again, we have the highest gun related death rates in the industrialized world and we need to put a stop to that by banning guns.
That's what matters. You 2nd amendmant freaks have put guns in the hands of psychos that roam around looking for an opportunity to kill.
You should all be charged with treason. - Reply to this comment
- Closet Hippy....so now our vets are "Psychos"??? Have you ever been in the service? If not, keep your f----ng mouth shut!!! They never have come home and gone apeshit and run around killing people with guns. What kind of idiot are you anyway!

- darkmeat it amazes me how many people talk about something when they have no idea about it.
The two posters you mentioned are prime examples.
The federalist papers are documents that give intimate details on what our founding fathers were thinking.
The purpose of the 2nd Amend. was so citizens could defend themselves and their property from everything from criminals, invading forces and YES OUR OWN GOV'T SHOULD IT BECOME A TYRANNY!
The assault rifle of the 18th century was the muzzle-loader, today it the evil black rifles.
How many people post here who can get totally owned when it come to firearms knowledge? If you dont know then shut up your just going to make yourselves and your argument seem flat stupid. - Reply to this comment

- If the founding fathers could visit our society today and see the terrible legacy created by the 2nd amendment they would go back to 1787 and promply remove that from the Constitution. We are a sick gun crazy society led by the leading terrorist group in the US called the NRA.We have the highest muder rate than any other democratic nation on this earth. That is a complete disgrace for our great nation.
