I don't believe she knew of the extent of the scam. I do believe though that every public statement that she makes is being carefully vetted by several lawyers and by a team of image consultants. The idea that she is speaking from her heart is nonsense. The image consultants told her it would be best for her image to say nothing. Then when the judge took money away the image consultants decided that the damage to her of further losses by the courts would outweigh the damage done to her by making a public statement.

If she was truly sorry she could demonstrate this by working with the financial investigators to uncover what assets that Bernie hid away over the years. Even recalling seemingly innocuous statements of Bernies that he made a few years ago - like locations of business trips - could go a long way to help uncover assets that are hidden away. But we won't be seeing this. Instead we will be seeing her image consultants continue to have her make prepared statements while at the same time her lawyers will be fighting tooth and nail to help her sequester even more assets.

rematenaj, pretty funny you are...actually, I base my comments on the real world because I have witnessed the way women work throughout the years and it never changes. Generally, women talk or text continually on their little cell phones, don't know anything about what's happening in the world politically (except what they read in People) and NEVER take responsibility for something that may have gone wrong...I'll bet you that most men would agree with me and of course women would not because they like to think of themselves as victims...Let me say however that there are those women out there (however rare) that are realistic, but the majority are not...I'm sure you're different though, right?

She is embarassed and ashamed. Well, that's better than being broke, like a lot of your victims. I'm just sickened.

Really Darth? You mean like Ken "Kenny Boy" Lay of Enron infamy? I think you will find he was a Republican scumbag. Scumbags know no one political stripe.

"America's women will embrace her victimhood" "Women never take responsibility anywhere or anytime, when the chips are down..." Unbelievable statements pw08-2009! I'm curious as to what "pw" in your moniker stands for - could it be your nasty statements are from a man who is under some woman's thumb?

Bernie has to serve the entire 150 years since there is NO early release or parole in the Federal court system. However, we must remain vigilant that the Obamanation doesn't "commute" his sentence or pardon him like The Clinster did at the end of his term (for money no less to fund his evil library). As for Bernie I hope he gets Bubba as his roomie (and butt buster friend).

Why is it that I believe her "Embarrassment And Shame" is over being caught, not over any morals she should have.

CBS/AP) The wife of convicted scam artist Bernard Madoff said she feels "betrayed and confused" by her husband's multibillion fraud scheme.

Pardon me but I can see it now...Ruth is seperating herself from Bernie and will demonize him eventually and I'm sure will milk herself as a "victim: from now on. The thing that makes me kind of sick to my stomach is the all too predictable way I'm sure America's women will embrace her victimhood and make her into a symbol of a strong woman...and you know it will happen and it's really all very funny...

nriss1859, You say that now, but once she appears on Oprah, you'll cry along with the audience members at how strong she is and what a mean man Bernie was. And you'll buy the People magazine that features her too...c'mon, you know it's true.

darthcheney123,

EXACTLY!
by stickdog3 June 29, 2009 4:44 PM EDT
I have to admit it you nailed this one. Thats exactly whats going to happen, and I get tired of hearing that bs on the news every day, "how can anyone do that to that poor wonderful woman" Please! This woman is no more a victim than the man in the moon. The Laws of Averages say theres no way you can maintain that type of decption over a sustained period of time, at some point the true "you" will come out even if in modest amounts. You cannot live with someone (in this case 5o years) and not know their true self, he can't possibly hide his true self for that long.
by sdeaselake June 29, 2009 6:34 PM EDT
Wow. These extremeists really need to think about what is coming out of their mouths. It is very dangerous to generalize as much as is done here.
by erasmus111 June 29, 2009 2:55 PM EDT
I don't no whether she knew or didn't know, but if she didn't, the fraud was committed against her as well. She not only found out that she was married to a man she didn't know for 50 years, but also that she was incredibly stupid. I don't know that you could be married to someone that long and not see what kind of a person he was. It takes an evil person to do something like this, surely it must have shown in other things.

And if it was me, I wouldn't be fighting to keep anything. I would be wanting to rid myself of that "dirty" feeling as soon as I could.

I want Ruth to know that I didn't interpret her silence as indifference. I interpret it as the canny action of a cunning white collar criminal who knows better than to speak off the cuff.

I'm sure that Ruth aches but I wish she would do it from inside a prison cell.

If she really didn't know, why didn't she invest her own money in the scheme?

by whitemale08 June 29, 2009 2:28 PM EDT
This woman is complete garbage and should be serving time right along side Madoff.

But what's even more appalling is the fact that UBS, whom we bailed out their worthless derivatives and credit-default swap scam through AIG, is getting away with all of the money laundered by Madoff in their swiss bank accounts.

Madoff, Stanford are just mid-level minions that are the cover sheilds for the real crimianls like Goldman Sucks and JP Morgan who are bankrupting the United States with their bailouts.

And Obama is betrayor lke his predecessor Bush for bailing out these crooks.
