azure13: Maybe you can afford a big SUV gas guzzler but I can't! I don't think most people can either! I'll have to drive around in a so-called ugly little economy car and be satisfied with it. First of all I can't afford the cost of a SUV and I couldn't afford the gasoline for it if I had one! And another thing, you obviously haven't been keeping up with the news about foreign car makers. Toyota and Volkswagon seem to be doing just fine!

The American car maker ceos have simply got to get it through their heads that they have got to stop making the big gas guzzlers! People don't want them and can't afford them! We want the small economy cars, the hybrids, the electrics or at the very least gasoline cars that get over 35 mpg! We want them now and we want them at an affordable price! We also don't want the "strip down" models. We want them equipped with everything that we are used to, air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, automatic transmission, etc., and we want them at rock bottom prices! We are not going to buy anything else!

That's a load of garbage. People do not want hybrids like the uglier than I thought possible Prius. They don't want electric cars, they don't want any of that crap.
They want SUVs and other larger vehicles. That was what the market demanded and that's what people were buying. Even Honda and Toyota started making larger trucks and SUVs. They were all making what was selling.

It's got nothing to do with that anyway. People aren't buying cars because they are losing their jobs. We sent too many jobs overseas and it finally caught up to us. Less consumers to spend means less products bought which snowballs into more lost jobs. In turn, no one is buying new cars. The foreign makers are hurting badly as well.

SJC You should take a course in economics 101. Individuals buy bonds from the Government, Banks and Corporations because they are willing to take a lower rate of return on their investment in order to have a degree of safety in their investment. We could buy the company stock or invest in a mutual fund or hedge fund but instead we have chosen to invest in bonds. Without us (as you called us pigs who skim bonds and dividends) their would be no US Treasury, banks to lend to corporations or any other means for anyone to get a loan and therefore you would not have a job. For our investment and low return on investment, we ask that we get paid per the agreements that were make when we gave our money to the agency that borrowed our money. I don't think countries or corporations or anyone else who bought US bonds are willing to get only 10 cents on the dollar for their investment. Remember the next time you put food in your mouth or take your kid out for an ice cream, bondholders help you get the job and money to do that!!!!!

I think Obacarama ought to keep his nose out of it. The automakers got themselves into this situation, they can darn well make it worse on their own. They don't need his help for that.

Where are the "leaner, meaner" cars??? Where are the electric cars? Where are the compressed air cars currently produced in France and India that run 1000 miles on a tank of air??? The truth is they will never be seen in the US. Liberals proposing "green" cars actually have no intention of weaning Americans off of gas powered vehicles. What liberals do propose is control over the US automakers, the cars they produce and what you can buy. In case you don't know it already, "green" = fraud.

Hmm... good to retrain displaced workers.

I don't know for sure, but is it a good idea to create two new 'Detroits', but for the Green Energy Industries? By that I mean, encourage the growth of towns in Arizona/Nevada for the solar industry, (brightsourceenergy.com) and Northern Texas for Pickens' Wind Farm plan. pickensplan.com/theplan

Maybe it will all arrive eventually from the Stimulus Package.

There would be people moving into these Green Energy areas needing homes, so that also helps the housing industry.

This displacement has happened before, (e.g. train workers, farmers and farm-hands, and even all those who followed the gold-rush over a century ago.) The key thing, is to channel/guide/encourage people into the newer growth industries... wind energy and solar energy, so that they don't feel lost or that the rug has been pulled completely from under their feet.

These people and the dealers etc. are good workers... everyone knows nothing lasts forever.... all they need though, is a sound alternative in Green Energy to get going again. Windmill and mirrors fabricators, crane operators, bulldozer operators, control systems technicians, installers, maintenance personnel, electrical and mechanical engineers, turbine technicians, IT, etc. etc. There is a positive future; we are just in transition now.

You do not know who I am nor what I do, so shut the heck up. I hold several degrees and have been a professional manager most of my adult life. Who the heck are you? I believe the workers should benefit from their labor. That those benefits should not be siphoned off for greedy money for nothing pigs that skim bond interest and dividends. Get those fat cat jerks out there on the lines building cars and see how long they last.

SJC Too Bad you didn't finish grammar school cause if you had you would have been able to get a good job and would have been proud of the job you had. Instead you think that because someone works hard and has a nice life, you should have the same life without having to work. By the way I gave GM bondmoney so GM could play the high wages and benefits the lazy UAW workers get. I don't want to see my tax money go to the UAW bums also!!!!!!

golfered2,

You name implies that perhaps you do a bit of golfing too. Perhaps you do because you live off of the money for nothing capitalist greed. It is fine for you to enslave workers at GM and skim off the bond interest, but heaven forbid the worker should have any time off or even begin to live a decent life. Only the money for nothing fat cat capitalist pigs should be able to do that.

Unless the automakers come out of this and offer a non carbon fueled, non polluting, reliable auto, We the taxpayers and car purchasers end up with a lose-lose situation.

That's fine that the auto workers want to take time off but not using my dime!!!! Nobody should get 80% of their pay plus unemployment benefits for not working. This is not a welfare industry!!! If you don't work you don't get paid!!!!! I do not want to pay taxes so the auto workers can golf and fish all summer long.

We are going to be going through a transition and a transformation. This is what is happening at this point in time. We ought to just accept that and make the best of it. If the auto workers want to take some time off during this period, that is fine with me. You try working long hours on an assembly line for decades with little or no time off and see how you like it.

GM just got another 4 Billion dollars of our taxpayer money. GM is also paying it's UAW employees 80% of their pay while they are shut down for the 9 weeks this summer. Good friend of mine brags that he will be playing golf and fishing all summer long and using no vacation time to do so. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO STOP BEING SUCKERS TO THE UAW!!!!!
