No matter how hard you try water always runs downhill unless you use allot of power for it to do otherwise.

In this case the water is the always in trouble US Auto Companies and the power is your tax dollars.

Bottomless pit. Should have never given the 17 billion which is gone and any amount given this time will be the same.

I know many people that will not buy a car from Chrysler or GM because they took bailout money in the first place, I feel the same way, ready to move on. If these (2) go out, Ford, Toyota and all of the plants in this country will get healthy fast.

Burry them and bury the UAW once and for all.

"Capitalism is having a heart..."

Capitalism has no heart. Capitalism is based on the means of production in private hands...period. That means the one with the gold rules. Labor is just a necessary evil that you would like to get rid of, if you could.

Pray for America, for this is not good news. Obama never managed a thing in his life of any consequence. At least GM and the others are not building trillions in deficits and escalating national debt.

I agree with what Obama is saying about the US auto industry and GM/Chrsyler. And I am glad that somebody is getting canned for being such a loser!

Im a small business person and if I fouled up as bad as Wagoner did, I would be out on the street with NO millions.

But, heres the thing, why are the fat cats on Wall Street getting a pass?

FIRE THE BUMS! That's the least we can ask for with our bailout dollars.......

Good, we hope the Obama plans fail...we don't do communism here. That's the point.

It's going to be easy now to get to communism since your Idol Republican Ex-President Bush took us all to halfway there - Socialism.

Nice to see Obama's serious about changing the way stuff is done all around our country by holding companies that want to continue abiding in the status quo accountable. America is tired of the same flawed strategies of businesses and politicians. If only we could get that same accountability directed towards Wall Street, the shimmering jewel set upon the crown of American capitalism.

Hopefully we can turn this economy around and actually focus on solving the deeper, systemic issues for why we're in this situation. Obviously bad banking's a good place to start, but there are other issues, like global poverty, that have huge economic and geopolitical ramifications.

The Borgen Project (www.borgenproject.org) has some interesting insight into addressing the issues of global poverty, something we can remedy easily and sustainably.

Some interesting figures to ponder:
$30 billion USD: The annual shortfall to end global poverty.
$550 billion USD: The annual US defense budget.

LRCCPA - I'm sure the auto industry isn't the only industry paying high wages with a little downtime. People in this industry deserve the money for the danger alone. Would you work there? I wouldn't!! And, is this the only industry with high salaries with downtime? Ever been to a corporate sponsored golf outing for "networking". Oh, and country club membership is free!

One little correction. American workers working for Foreign Auto Makers make MORE per hour than those working for Domestic Makers under UAW.

To big to fail?? 400 thousand jobs at risk?? What a bunch of crap. Politics being what it is wants to have it's cake and eat it at the same time. The UAW bought the election for the Democrats never thinking that the democratic left following the religion of FDR is yet determined to DESTROY all big business in the USA. Only then will the Harvard elitists be able to control total life in the USA. Look at Europe. Please look at Europe. There can never be a Microsoft in Europe, there is no such thing as venture capital in Europe. All Europe is noted for is the "dole".Here is your pension, enjoy life as we define it for you.

You obviously do not know what you are talking about. Catch the show Dragon's Den on BBC America and you will realize that there are people in Europe with venture capital who are willing to risk some of their money to get people started in businesses.

Hey Lib !!! Your in charge, you wanted a total one-party dictatorship, with no checks and balances, no opposition, absolute corrupt power.....you got it !!! so why would you want ideas from the Republicans ? Just say No.......... to socialism.....lol

it was the Republicans in Congress that Promised Americans in a Public Announcement an Alternative Plan. Where is it?

Their plan is to try to abstruct everything that Obama attempts to do to get us out of this mess in the hopes that he and the country fails. Then they hope to come back to power and control what's left of this country. They care nothing about people or principle...just power.

Why, because does the automotive industry affect housing, no.......however, banking, credit and loans affect all areas of business, therefore....banking's survival affects all industries and businesses, small and large.....Automotive does not.....that's why we must have a solid financial system, or risk collapse of everything.

Since you favor turning over the Auto Industry to Foreign Makers, why not sell all American Industries such as Banking, Insurance, Housing and Investment to Foreigners since they do such a much better job and they do not require "Guaranteed Compensations Regardless of Performance" Multi-Million dollars contracts.

You remind me of the Pontiac Fiero in the 1980s from GM. 2 years later, Toyota came out with the MR4. 4 years later, GM decided to stop producing the Fiero because the MR4 was selling more. Instead of making the Fiero better, it was killed.

Similarly, instead of making GM better, you want it killed.

Not putting Obama down, but what would he know about running a fast food joint much less the automotive industry? He has never ran anything, done anything, so what makes him think he can solve the problems? His only hope is to bring some good people and get this sorted out. He needs to just get over it and admit his cabinet can't handle this and needs to be cleaned out and start over.

I am still waiting for the Republican's Alternative Budget Plan for the next fiscal year. Until the Republicans agree on their own Party's Survival Plan, then, we cannot expect any survival plan from the Republicans for the Auto Industry.

_

Here's the plan...let the autmobile industry decide how to fix themselves and get the hell out of the way. That's the plan!
Posted by mortar29 at 1:29 PM : Mar 30, 2009

The auto industry came to the government asking for help because they had no viable plan. Not the other way around.

So your plan is stay the course?

Nice.

JOE-NY-4.

A lot of industries will be affected if the auto workers don't have jobs which leads to the dealerships going out of business which means the banking industry will have problems due to the lost revenue of the car loans.

America has become a country of consumers not producers. You cannot consume unless you produce. We need to have a stronger backbone of production in this country or it will fail.

WAGES & SALARIES

You cannot pay a CEO of a failing company $20,000,000+ and pay factory workers $78.00 @ hour (as well as often getting paid for weeks sitting in the breakroom watching TV) and expect to survive anything more than a 2% drop in sales. It's really that simple!
Lower wages & salaries (and benefits) and GM & Chrysler cars will sell for $10,000 to $16,000.

if you knew how to read, many individuals have given great ideas.

good point joe...however if they knew how to read we would have avoided this entire stimulus debacle and maybe the loop holes that popping up now would have been written out. but obama had to have his legislation passed RIGHT THEN!!! So all the little democratic sheep rolled over and said Yea without even reading it through
