Nancy Pelosi bowed to a demand by President Bush that any aid come from a fund that had been intended to help Detroit produce more fuel-efficient cars.

Smart move here - afterall isn''''t what the bailout money will be used for (more fuel efficient cars)?

I guess you missed the part where Congress is considering taking it from the TARP next year after Bush is gone -- sounds like a short walk around a temporary obstuction.

Anytime you take money from a fund there is less money avaiable for the intended use so in this case there is less money for the research and retooling for fuel efficiency and alternative fuels. They will just use the money to pay bills and not invest in developing fuel efficient cars. That is why the condition of any bailout has to be that commitment to move to fuel efficiency and technology to stop using oil as the fuel.

I totally agree. But if they really want to survive, they have to get get switched over. One thing we have all learned over the past few years is how to travel less.

Well!!! They can just as well open the bank vault and let everyone in!!!
I still think part of the bail out money should have gone to us and let us take care of the economy....
Oh Well!!!

"Democrats have agreed on $15 billion in loans, which is less than half of what the car chiefs were seeking. "

The oldest trick in the compromise world--ask for twice what you want and accept a 50% cut. Congress gets to criticize and complain, but still give out the goodies. I am sure the Democratic leadership coached them about faking the tense negotiations, too. Win-win for everyone!
